Focus
First there's black.
Bright circles of light
grow into my vision.
A field of white spots,
criss-crossing spirals form;
colors start to take shape.
I release the pressure,
the palms of my hands
move from my closed eyes.
The room remains dark
then slowly blurs into view.
The image is clear,
but a colored shape remains
in the center of my vision;
mostly purple, green in parts.
My gaze travels the room;
my shape remains in the center,
skimming the walls,
speeding up or slowing down
at my whim.
I used to marvel
at my uncanny skill
to predict its path.
A quick dart to the left
and I was one step ahead
anticipating its moves
never losing it's trail.
Of course I learned
that I was in control,
the shape fixed in my sight,
giving me the power
to determine its track
instead of forever following
never catching up.
I used to get frustrated
unable to focus my gaze
on the object I pursued.
But once I realized the truth,
it no longer mattered
if I could catch it
just that it could never get away.
