A little late, I know. But regardles of whether or not they carried out their plan... WTF?

Link (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/religion/6346662/North-Carolina-church-plans-Halloween-Bible-burning.html)

The book-burning is hoped to be a social event, with a barbecue laid on for attendees. It is not clear whether the meat will be grilled over the heat of burning Gospels.

(ETA: I just spotted the line "bonfire of the profanities" in the article. That would have made a much better thread title. Dang!)

Burning never took place, but people are still crazy. (http://blog.seattlepi.com/bookpatrol/archives/184146.asp)

Damn, to think there would have been a few less bibles in the world.

A church burning bibles, that's something I didn't think I would ever hear. Then again some of the southern baptists are quite a radical group.

You're right, I appologize.

"Fewer", not "less". Not believing in god is no excuse for bad grammar, thanks for catching that. :p

I wonder what would happen if a group annouced they were doing that with a stack of Qurans.

I'd consider them equally looney.

If it helps any, if anybody wants to bring to me holy texts of any sort, so long as the individual copy does not have unique artifact value, I'll be happy to burn it in a non-denominational ceremony.

I ran the famous Mohammed cartoons from a few years ago on my LJ, but nobody bothered to come kill me.

I've got lots of Bibles, and I wouldn't burn any of them. There are no gods, but the critical study of these texts is very important, and also a heck of a lot of fun.

The KJV certainly makes understanding difficult on the current day layperson. I almost wonder if those churches that insist on the KJV do so because it is so much easier to make the recondite text mean anything you need it to. Translations in present-day idiom sometimes reveal the plain sense of verses that really raise the hackles on modern sensibilities. ("Slaughter everyone but keep the virgins for yourselves? It really says that?!?")

My initial post was obviously facetious, I'm not a fan of book burning of any sort.

Oh really?? YOUR post was "obviously" facetious? I Like That.

Why obvious? Was it ridiculous on its face? Or is that a bit less obvious to others than it is to you yourself?
