I'm attempting to create a document online that is to be shared with a specific group of people. This document should be password protected, or protected from outside eyes.

I would like to use GoogleDoc's but the most protecting it offers is a users must be logged in to view this document. I'm not sure if this will protect the document from people being able to view it if they are just randomly logged into Google.

I remember when I created the Wii Document it was accessible with only the link but the settings seem to have changed.

Any suggestions of a site I can use to make an online document that is password protected?

Google docs will only be available to people logged in to the google account(s) you choose to share it with.

ETA: to double check that, click "Share" then choose "See who has access". If it doesn't say "Sign-in is required to view this item", click "Change" and then select "always require sign-in"

Do I have to allow each user? I want to create the doc then provide a link for anyone who receives the link to use and pass on if necessary.

Basically, I was thinking a LoT contact list would be a good idea. It occurred to me that very few of us know each other outside of this group and would have no idea who to contact if there was an emergency of some sort. Sure, something happened to me, E would be able to contact my parents, but if something else happened to someone else who would we know to contact. But the list would have to be private.

Sounds like a good idea - but don't make the password Bacon - that would be TOO obvious. ;)

can we not create a single google account (ie LoTfolk or something) and just PM all involved the login and password ?

I think in order to protect the document, you'll need someone to authenticate the readers - google can do it, but require a google account, yahoo groups can do it, but will require a yahoo account - or you can host and protect it yourself, but then you have to do the authentication.
