This video demonstrates how an enterprising hacker created a Twitter account for his washing machine. When a load of laundry is done, the machine's Twitter account is updated to reflect this completed status.

A lot of effort for a little gained is okay in my book if it has that "cool" factor. But here's where it gets scary:

The washing machine has 555 followers.

More than five hundred people are watching the status of one man's washing machine, waiting to find out when his laundry has completed its spin around the agitator.

:D

Reminds me of the coffee maker web cam (http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/coffee/coffee.html) which predated the internet (well, technically not, but the internet that Al Gore invented)

You do know that he never made such a claim, right?

You do know that he never made such a claim, right? You seriously went there? Wow.

For the record, no Al Gore did not claim to invent the internet. The exact comment he made in a 1999 Wolf Blitzer interview was "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet."

No, this is not a claim to have invented the internet. He was simply, albeit quite awkwardly, trying to imply that he played a significant role in bringing the internet to the masses. It was simply campaign rhetoric - something both sides are guilty of.

But it could easily be interpreted that Al Gore is claiming MUCH more responsibility for the evolution of the internet than he actually deserved.

But seriously?

You know what AL Gore will get credit for someday? Killing ManBearPig.

There, I said it. One day Al Gore will capture and kill ManBearPig.

But they just found a bunch of emails proving that ManBearPig is a hoax.

Well if Gore didn't invent the internet then the internet doesn't exist. Without the internet, all e-mails are fake because e-mail doesn't exist. So any e-mails showing that ManBearPig is a hoax are obviously a hoax. Proving, without a doubt, that ManBearPig exists.

Um... But he did play a significant roll. The High Performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Performance_Computing_and_Communication_Act_o f_1991)

Often referred to as the Gore Bill, it was created and introduced by then Senator Albert Gore, Jr.

Gore's legislation also helped fund the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois, where a team of programmers, including Netscape founder Marc Andreessen, created the Mosaic Web browser, the commercial Internet's technological springboard. 'If it had been left to private industry, it wouldn't have happened,' Andreessen says of Gore's bill, 'at least, not until years later.'

Yes, seriously.

No worries here!

I don't remember the last time I tried to find the coffeepot cam. It started to get too easy to find things once you put in "voyeur" to the search engines. :)

How did he feel when it went away?

I've been thinking about this (which just proves I have no life) and I think my dad would have been delighted and astounded at what the internet has become. I think the coffee pot cam was an example rather than a final goal.

I think my dad would have been having a blast.

You know, a delicious baked cheese krisp has recently gotten its own Twitter account, as well. I mean, what could a delicious baked cheese krisp possibly have on its mind?

BTW: could you swing down to Santa Ana (right off the 55 at MacArthur) the next time you deliver to Miss Bobbies? I can never seem to get away anymore to purchase :(
