So, when will T-Bone get to experience his first Coachella? That's what those baby backpack carriers are for! I bet the little dude would totally rock out. :snap:
If our finances greatly improve after the first of the year, we're thinking about checking it out this time around, depending on who's playing, of course.

There's nothing I find more unnerving than seeing an infant at those shows - in 100 degree heat, blasting music (even with the headphones one).
We're NOT going to be those people.
Take it to Burning Man instead. Those babies always seemed to be having fun.

Jay-Z? Seriously?
You know, Friday is the only day that's really pulling at me. Grizzly Bear, Passion Pit, Fever Ray, Yeasayer, The Specials, Little Dragon. At risk of getting a glare from CP when she wakes up and sees this - Theo should be babysittable by April, I'm seriously tempted to hand him over for the day.
Ugh, then I noticed Edward Sharp on Saturday. I've been dying to see them live. And seeing MGMT again would be awesome. And of course Gorilla on Sunday, and I see that Infected Mushroom finally made it past the rumor stage. So no doubt it will be another great full weekend. But Friday is, fo me, the definite standout if I have to (get to) pick one day.
eta: oooh, Miike Snow and King Kahn on Sunday. Man, Theo's lucky I love him so much.
ETA more: What's with the ???? after Thom Yorke? Does that mean he's questionable? That it might or might not be Radiohead or just him? What gives?

Hmmm.... if I could only go on one day, it would be Sunday. The headliners are cool and all (I have tix to see Pavement in NYC in September), but Gary Numan! Charlotte Gainsbourg! Talvin Singh! Gil Scott-Heron! What's the word?

Friday line-up is the most tempting, but I'm still stuck in the same place I always am: There are few acts I really want to see and I'd rather see them in a small venue individually. Was bummed when I realized I missed Florence + the Machine in L.A. recently.
Passion Pit is GREAT live, btw.

Unfortunately it seems that new for this year, they will not sell single day tickets, except for the day of the event at the box-office. We'll see if that stands, but if it does it may just prevent me from going.

I've seen Devo recently enough that they aren't as much of a Draw for me - but i I were there on Saturday I would certainly catch their set.
I'd go Friday to fill out a long list of bands I never got to see like, Public Image Ltd, Grace Jones, the Specials, and Echo and the Bunnymen. LCD Soundsystem would be fun to see again, and I'd love to see Little Dragon as well.
In the past - day of tickets always were available, so I'm not going to write this one off yet and will probably ask for the surrounding days off just in case I win a contest or something.

Stubhub has taken off the 1-day passes for Coachella.

The rumor is ticket sales may be pro-rated on the day of - meaning Friday, pay full price, Saturday pay 2/3 price, Sunday pay 1/3 - since attendance requires a 3-day wrist band. I'm still waiting to see how it plays out
Ghoulish Delight
02-06-2010, 12:18 PM
 What, they can't afford 4 different colored wristbands?
The wording from the site is: Tickets can be purchased at the box office for cash, Visa / Mastercard, only on the days of the event and only if tickets are still available (from 3-day pass allotment).
Could be read either way.

So.
Coachella sold out. Their f'd up ticket concept apparently did exactly what they wanted it to do.
It's entirely possible that they lowered the amount of tickets available. Thing is, Coachella is a bellweather for the coming events for the summer and everyone sees this as a huge thumbs up, especially in these economic times. The idea that everyone is going to point at a lowered maximum as being sold out would be sucky.
I'm not sure what to believe. In any case, GoldenVoice looks like geniuses and we're still not able to go because of it.
However, I didn't come here for the whiny recap, I came to post this.

Word on the "street" is that day tickets will be available at the gate, as always. Of course, you'd have to drive out there to find out if it's true. But some folks will, and then you'll know for next year.

I had considered the option of driving out and gambling. Worst case would be spending a day shopping in Palm Springs, which ain't a bad consolation prize. But eh, there was too much risk of having to sit in a huge line of cars for an hour without getting a reliable answer one way or another, only to finally get close enough to learn you were boned. No amount of swanky furniture that I can't afford makes that less frustrating (although I suppose we would have had the excuse to blow the $200+ dollars we would have spent on tickets and food).
I am pretty supremely bummed that I actually know someone who worked on one of the big installations and won't get to see it. CP and I agree, we're going to try to keep our eye on the coverage through the weekend. It'll be bittersweet, but I'd like to have some insight into how it goes, plus I'm really curious as to how well it gets covered. With the many outlets, between artists I follow on twitter, facebook fan pages, official webcasts, and searchable social media, I expect to be able to keep pretty decently abreast. Kinda makes me wish I'd studied set times.

I am seriously impressed with this "live" stream on Facebook. I was skeptical, it was billed as "live" and that it is not. But I dare say it's better than live. It's actually produced very very professionally, captures the pace of the day surprisingly well, and, combined with the day of twitter feed watching, I successfully felt informed about what was going on through the day. Like, next best thing to being there.
That probably has a lot to do with the fact that, except for one omission the acts they've been showing (they only showed a subset) have been the ones I would have chosen to see.
And, it also helps that they've all rocked. And much to my surprise, rather than feeling bummed or jealous, I've just been thrilled that Coachella once again rocks, and that I at least got to get a glimpse into it.

Well, maybe it's a good thing we didn't go, with 75K in attendance word is Coachella's been a huge Clusterfvck this year. Our friends gave up after 4 hours trying to get from their Hotel to the venue - they sold their tickets for the remains of the weekend and are just kicking back in Palm Springs instead. Reading the Coachella boards their story is not uncommon with 6 hour waits getting in and hour + waits getting out. Apparently the tents are at capacity as well making stage hoping difficult if not impossible.
I will miss seeing these bands, and of course Lucent Dossier, but it seems they hit some serious snags this year. I have to wonder if all the new housing around the venue has disrupted the normal traffic control, which always has been annoying in the past, but still tolerable.

We read that at one point they ran out of wristbands at the gate. They always screw day 1 up in terms of traffic and gate entry, the added confusion of an entirely new ticketing model must have really thrown them for a loop. It will be interesting to see if today is any better. Among other things, most people should already have wristbands, which should theoretically make entry a lot smoother, right?
I wonder how official those crowd #'s are. It seems pretty surprising in a down economy and with getting rid of 1 day tickets that attendance would be up.
