* sigh *
My great plans for WorldCon 2006 (http://www.loungeoftomorrow.com/LoT/showthread.php?t=632&highlight=worldcon) in Anaheim never panned out. I thought it was perfect, High SF Geekdom + Disney. What could be better?
Turns out there is an answer to that one.
WorldCon 2011 is being held in Reno, NV. At a Casio resort. Bingo! High SF Geekdom and Poker!
I'm joining today and hopefully the rooms will be available soon.
The only thing left is to get published and nominated for a Hugo before Aug 2011. Anyone know a good SF publisher? If I need it in print by Aug of this year, how long do I have to write it?

I'll be there! I'm going to get Reno-vated!

Excellent.
That means you can nominate my novel, short story, screenplay or whatever I end up creating for a Hugo. :D

Science Fiction, Gambling, Cosplay hotties, Ginormous buffet, art and dealers rooms....
You're damn straight! Anywhere but Reno is NOT the place to be!

Science Fiction, Gambling, Cosplay hotties, Ginormous buffet, art and dealers rooms....You forgot to mention the side trip to the Moonlite Bunny Ranch! It's just 45 minutes south of Reno in Carson City.
ETA: And bad news on another possible side trip. Apparently the Ponderosa Ranch (where Pa, Adam, Hoss and Little Joe lived on Bonanza) is no longer open (http://gocalifornia.about.com/cs/laketahoe/a/ponderosa.htm).

And miss the symposium on nanobot ethics? I think not!

Only if I can have private time with Ben Browder and Michael Shanks (or if only one is there then that one).

Don't ya just love the airlines?
I booked my flights sometime back,
DC to LAX (for a one day layover :D )
LAX to Reno
and Reno back to DC
Yesterday I was notified of a "Change" in my flights.
LAX-to-Reno was changed from a direct flight landing at around 10:00am to a flight via Seattle arriving in Reno at 5:00pm. But they were proud to point out that the cost had not changed.
Really? I mean really?
Ginormous buffet
Warning, unless your talking about a special buffet just for the event, none of the standard buffets on Reno's "Strip" are noteworthy.
Keep an eye out for Burning Man early arrivers. Though I'm not sure if they'd stick out from SF geeks all that much.
And just for the record, you can drive from LAX to Reno in about 8.5 hours.

Nothing special, just the standard Atlantis buffet. It did get a good rating on Yelp (http://www.yelp.com/biz/toucan-charlies-buffet-and-grill-reno-2), but I won't expect too much.
Just out of curiosity, what buffet would you rank as noteworthy?

Just out of curiosity, what buffet would you rank as noteworthy?Krafty McNoodle's Füd Funhaus (formerly Charlie Krunkle's Carnival of Calories)
It's just five minutes off of exit 5! Kids under five eat free and they'll have a great time in our play room! Bring grandma and uncle Fergus cause folks over 55 years young get 10% off!
Remember, at Krafty's, it's not all you can eat, it's all you can stand!
In Reno? None of them. The best is a the Sunday morning bruch buffet at Sterling's Steakhouse in the Silver Legacy.
The buffet at the Atlantis is probably the best of the regular dinner buffets, but I was assuming you were down in the casino cluster on Virginia off the freeway (Circus Circus, El Dorado, Silver Legacy, Cal-Neva, Sands, and Harrah's). Among those, The Buffet at the El Dorado is probably the best but it isn't a high bar.
Nothing in Reno close to Spice Market (Planet Hollywood), Le Buffet (Paris), or Wynn Buffet (Wynn) in Vegas.

Ahh, I've visited the Wynn buffet. It was indeed top notch. At the other end the the scale I've also had the buffet at the Trump in Atlantic city, a meal to be feared. As long as the Atlantis is somewhere in the middle I'll be fine.
Thanks for the tips.

Change of plans.
Rather than being in Reno next month for the World Science Fiction Convention, casio action and adequate buffet meals, I will instead be in Cleveland (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysmLA5TqbIY) where as far as I can tell they have none of that stuff.

Rather than being in Reno next month for the World Science Fiction Convention, casio action and adequate buffet meals...and the Moonlight Bunny Ranch (http://www.bunnyranch.com/)! (And yes, the link is NSFW)
(And I'll bet they get a lot of business from the conventioneers!)

I saw that and instead of actively seeing that it said "NSFW" my brain said to me, "If Kevin is specifically saying something about the link, then it must be that it's "SFW" because, by default there would be no need for Kevin to say anything about the link, we'd all just go ahead and assume it's NSFW. So it's safe to click on the link."

Was going to make a joke about your casio action typo. But I looked at the Wikipedia page for Casio and am instead amused by how the company got started:
Casio was established in April 1946 by Tadao Kashio, an engineer specializing in fabrication technology. Kashio's first major product was the yubiwa pipe, a finger ring that would hold a cigarette, allowing the wearer to smoke the cigarette down to its nub while also leaving the wearer's hands free. Japan was impoverished immediately following World War II so cigarettes were valuable, and the invention was a success.

5:46pm today is when my flight to LAX takes off without me. Rather than spending tomorrow at DLR, then flying to Reno for WorldCon I'll be at work the rest of the week and then heading for Cleveland to drop Moonie Jr. off at college.
My cheese is sad on a whole host of levels.

It's sad, but, being an Australian, and knowing what I know about America, I totally had to check on Google whether that place was real or not....

I got to Reno about lunch time. The hotel is nice, but being in Nevada, smells like stale cigarettes.
Don't feel too bad about missing it Moonie... From what I've seen so far this is going to be the saddest Worldcon I've experienced. I was talking to an old friend. He commented that the programing, art show, and exhibits just aren't up to Worldcon standards. I had to agree with him.
Oh... and they didn't order enough badge lanyards. They ran out this morning. Sounds like poor planning all around.

Being "the saddest x ever" is a contractual requirement for any event held in Reno.
Except my wedding.

Doesn't the fact that it's being held in Reno at all make it a saddest event? I think the only events I've ever been to there were Logging Shows.
