I think this (http://content.usatoday.com/communities/ondeadline/post/2010/02/controversial-obama-statue-in-indonesia-removed-from-park-after-protests/1) explains it all.

I felt this little 3.7 that just happened. (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Quakes/ci14738436.php) Short jolty one.

Were you in the bathroom or on the phone?

I was IMing with Jen and trying to call Chris. That's probably why it was so small. Now, if I was IMing + on the phone + in the bathroom, then it would have been much, much larger.

Even The Boy now asks where you were each time he hears about an earthquake south of the Grapevine.

Now, had we been in Chicago on top of it all...

I was talking to a friend on Skype when it happened. He lives in Toronto, and was in a tall building when it hit, which is a bit scary. He's been through worse ones- he's from India, and they have some really strong quakes there. Still, he was pretty nervous.

I was watching the Mike Rowe Channel (also known as Discovery), and there was a promo for Build It Bigger where Danny was in a gold mine in South Africa, several miles underground when an earthquake hit.

No thank you!

It's worse than you think. The earthquake didn't "hit". The earthquake was triggered by the blasting they were doing to extend the mine. So the quakes were happening pretty much constantly. (incidentally, Build It Bigger is a great show)

Yeah - looking at the supports down there didn't give me warm fuzzy feelings about being down there.

I've watched Build It Bigger a few times. I mostly like it because he does a pretty good job of simplifying stuff in layman's terms. I just think that sometimes he makes it a little TOO simple. Although I love how Danny sometimes comes across as a total wus :D

Just felt one...or two.

Felt shaking, then there was a pause, then more shaking. Neither seemed very large.

USGS said 5.4 east of Oceanside.

5.9 centered at Borrego Springs

USGS said 5.4 east of Oceanside. When I first read "east of Oceanside", I didn't think that sounded right. But it turns out that Borrego Springs is more east of Oceanside than I realized (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&q=oceanside+to+borrego+springs,+ca&ie=UTF8&z=9&saddr=oceanside&daddr=borrego+springs,+ca&geocode=FV6H-gEdZe4A-SkFd1tgXmXcgDGHn485P8ueAQ%3BFcBx-wEdHEIQ-Slxzb2O4CfagDGSUhacNNTClA) (as in, though it is about 90 miles, Borrego Springs IS east of Oceanside, which surprised me).

USGS is all over the place on magnitude. When I first looked, it was reporting as 5.7. It was later upgraded to 5.9. Now, it is showing as 5.4 (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqscanv/Quakes/quakes_big.html).

If my co-worker hadn't said something, I might not have noticed it at all. When I did, it was a most pleasant rolling. I guess my negative reaction to the reaction is because she nearly panicked - and so when twitter and facebook naturally exploded with something actually happening, it seemed a bit overmuch. Anyway, my co-worker kept insisting it was a huge quake, and the sensation must have been dampened because we we feeling it from atop a tall building.

We're on the third floor.

Northridge was scary. Everything since has been quite fun.

I definitely noticed that one (http://www.wtop.com/?nid=25&sid=2004187). It woke me up. I thought we got buzzed by a fighter jet (which happens every now and then).

WASHINGTON - A 3.6 magnitude earthquake woke the Washington metro region Friday, rattling homes and startling people.

The U.S. Geological Survey says it happened at exactly 5:04:49 a.m. about 3 miles under the earth's surface.

We had a measly 3.7 centered in Long Beach this morning. I was driving so I didn't feel it. However, I can say that this is the closest I've ever been to an epicenter.

Haha I was just looking at yahoo news and clicked on the Long Beach quake.... and my first thought was "Is Lisa spending too much time in the bathroom again?" :D

The first notice of this one said it was centered south of Long Beach which would put it in the ocean. But an item in the LA Times said it was centered around PCH and Anaheim Street. Kinda specific. Just missing the street address.

Wow! I didn't know it was so close to us. No wonder Bill felt it so strongly!

ETA: I'm estimating it's about 1500 feet from our house.
