This has been a damned entertaining story.

For those not following the story, basically, an Apple Engineer (Gray Powell) took his test next generation iPhone (not yet released or even formally acknowledged it is coming by Apple) with him to a bar to celebrate his birthday.

And left it there (DOH!)

Gizmodo bought it and has posted the whole saga of the loss and recovery by Apple. It is amusing.

Ignoring the information gained, isn't it a bit of a dick move to keep something you know was lost, where are capable of finding the owner and then not only telling everybody about it but tearing it apart to do so?

And Kevy had a better title.

I didn't believe this when I first saw it on Gizmodo several days ago. But I guess time (or at least a hundred thousand stories on the internet) has demonstrated it actually happened.

Meh, not all that excited about a forward-facing camera. Have they figured out any other cool features that might inspire purchase of a new device?

Meh, not all that excited about a forward-facing camera. The funny thing is - I never even read about the actual features of the phone that they found out: I was more interested in the whole story of the lost phone (I've been following this for the last few days on Twitter).

The forward facing camera comes in handy for Skype and other video conferencing services. Also, so you can see what you are taking a picture of for sexting (without having to shoot a picture of yourself in the mirror).

Meh, not all that excited about a forward-facing camera. Have they figured out any other cool features that might inspire purchase of a new device? Not sure it is worthy of dropping a working current model if you have something newer (at least 3G), but if you have an older iPhone or are looking for a new phone in general, it might be a good thing.

ok, the forward facing phone is good for sexting, but I still contend most pictures are taken of things other than yourself, in which case you want the screen facing you and the lens facing away. I'm beginning to re-think the whole thing might be a hoax.

The camera on the front is a lower quality camera (from a still-image standpoint) optimized specifically for video-chat (e.g. skype) use.

Plus, in my limited roaming around Facebook it is my estimation that 72.367% of all cell phone photos posted on the net are pictures taken of the person holding the phone, arm outstretched and really hoping the framing is correct.

I believe the only reason young people go to parties is so they can take this type of group photo.

What's really weird is the realization that people 10-15 years younger than me are better at it than I am.

a lower quality camera? Um, is there such a thing? The iPhone camera is the most craptacular digital camera in the known universe.

Ah, hence the "upgrade" to an even MORE craptacular camera! Genius!!!

No, what's really weird is the realization that people 10-15 years younger than me are adults.

Like I said, a lower quality camera from a still image standpoint. It's not there for the purpose of still images. It's there for the purpose of video chat (said for the 3rd time). Considering the amount of compression necessary to send video at a serviceable frame-rate across the mobile internet, a high quality camera would be a waste of money. A simple cheap-o tiny camera can produce good-enough-video-quality, but it will not produce a particularly good still image.

That too. But I recently had the realization that I frame my photos very differently than people of that age, and subsequently, my photos look way worse than theirs do when viewed at avatar and thumbnail sizes.

Wait for it, here comes the other shoe (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-20003446-37.html)...

Police have seized computers and servers belonging to an editor of Gizmodo in an investigation that appears to stem from the gadget blog's purchase of a lost Apple iPhone prototype.

Deputies from the San Mateo County Sheriff's office obtained a warrant on Friday and searched Jason Chen's Fremont, Calif., home later that evening, Gizmodo acknowledged on Monday.
