Yep, all I thought was cliques are us. Perfect way to rid facebook of all the benefit I get out of it. (Which is stuff, ideas, links, photos, and news shared by the widest variety of people).


That said, I think a LoT group is a really good idea. Can I join?

Yeah, not sure Facebook has the best interface for adding folks, as I seem to have already added many who are requesting to be added - maybe using old email addresses or just some odd lag-time going on. In any event I suspect before long everyone except Parmesan Jim will be there soon.

Currently the membership is public but you bring up a good point in that here while membership is "public" in some sense there is the veil of the screen name - I shall make it a secret society and hide the membership - much more fun and cliquish that way

Oh ho ho. The mom joke. Y'know, I use it as a bit of a punchline, but my family dynamics are such that a bit of busybodyness on the part of my mom back in December has resulted in a rift between her mother, sister, and niece. All due to her getting involved with a FB entry from a nephew of my stepfather. I need this convoluted shiat in my own life? No, I do not. The common wisdom seems to be that I'm somehow over-reacting, or that my concerns could all be addressed through FB's privacy settings. So, I did some poking around on teh intarwebs to find out what problems other people might have with FB. Mainly because I kept hearing about Mark Zuckerberg's slippery grasp of privacy and property. Sadly, I have not been reassured. So, while it sounds like a swell time will be had by all, for now I'm going to remain Facebook free. If I could set up a trial account, and back out of it if I didn't dig it, I might feel better. Apparently, though, closing a FB account is next to impossible. Wikipedia has an illuminating article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Facebook) on the whole thing. I'm sure it was written by the same crazy people who think that climate change is real, and that the homo-sex is a valid lifestyle choice.

Has anyone besides me felt that LoT was on its last legs lately? It was suggested by somebody that we all just move over to facebook and carry on there. Not sure if this is what's going to happen with this Group (it doesn't seem able to robust enough to substitute even for the slimmed-down LoT of 2010, but who knows?)

It's much easier to load a webpage on a computer and pop back and forth between that page and something else then it is to look at one page on my phone. However LoT goes is where it goes. I'd probably get a lot more done at work if I wasn't posting.

I won't abandon the LoT! I find the FB format difficult, and I can see it being even moreso if it gets more than a couple threads going. I like the format here a zillion times better.

And yeah, I would post things here that I don't think would be good on FB.

If Facebook is the evolution of here, then I'll probably be left behind (not that such is an argument against whatever evolution happens). I'm unlikely to add the group to the very limited filter I use for what I read on Facebook.

The purpose of here is to have conversations (for me, anyway). Facebook is horrible for anything but the most minimal of conversation (in my experience).

But I've kept the group membership in case I'm wrong (I was, for a while, wrong about twitter) but if you notice I've eventually left the group, that's why. Nothing personal.

Odd that you stay that Alex. I find Facebook to be exactly like LoT. People post something and, if it sparks an interest, people respond and keep responding in what becomes an actual thread.

I don't think a single Group will naturally produce the variety of threads necessary to imitate a message board - but since theoretically the membership of the real LoT and the facebook LoT are the same, there is nothing to stop that from happening. The threads just don't get convenient names.

I must be the only one capable of telling their mom "I'll add you to Facebook but you can't see anything" or "sure, I'll add you" then block everything.

I added my mom, filtered her out then called her up 2 weeks later (after asking her daily who random people were who kept trying to friend me) and said "mom, I have to delete you from Facebook. I am tired of cousins and friends of yours I have no recollection of ever meeting trying to add me"

Then again I'm waiting for her to try and add Erica. Apparently she's showing up as a suggested friend for her.

I would not be happy if LoT went away to be replaced by a FB group. There are many things I would not want to post on FB - even in a "secret" group. There is no such thing as privacy on FB.

I prefer the structured thread format and relative anonymity of LoT.

It's not a big deal to me. It is more of a curiosity deal. I'm curious as to what the value of a Facebook group, if any, ends up being. Since this group, for the most part exists for talking to each other, I don't see the value of saying that this talking (under the umbrella of the group) will happen in two different places. So either one or the other will fade away or the group will constantly be repeating itself in both locations (as with all the people who simply mirror everything they say to every social network site). Or a value will develop that I'm completely not thinking of.

And that which I find interesting to think about, I talk about.

For people who can't or won't use Facebook (I'm not in that camp because I use Facebook, I just don't use Facebook for the purpose filled by LoT), I can see why it might be a big deal for an important social circle to at least partially move to where they aren't.

I'm generally annoyed by online chat of any kind. I don't initiate FB chat, or yahoo mail chat, or any other format. I prefer the LoT thread, message board format. I can take things one bit at a time as opposed to trying to keep up with a live chat.

I am now visiting facebook (and other sites) in Https nirvana so now the only ones I have to worry about stealing/sharing my data is facebook itself.

I would also recommend the GoogleSharing (http://www.googlesharing.net/) add-on for anonymizing your Google searches.

That said, there are apps you can get that will tell you this.

For example, FriendsLog allows you to be notificed if a Friend:

Takes you off their friends list
Changes their name
Deactivates their account

So if it is important to you that the person never know then you probably shouldn't do it and just completely isolate them.
