New Candle Replicates ‘Print’ Smell For E-Ink Users

One of the more common and baffling complaints about electronic reading devices is that they don’t feel as ‘warm’ as real books or newspapers, or that the ‘book smell’ is absent.

A lifelong book-devourer and compulsive reader, I can honestly say that these aesthetic concerns never entered into my decision to switch over to electronic-only reading materials. But again and again, I encounter this idea- that book smell is somehow going to keep the tradition of printing on paper alive. Because horse smell did so much to keep humanity from adopting cars.

Anyway. Consumerist covered a new candle (http://consumerist.com/2011/06/newsprint-scented-candle-kindles-nostalgia-without-ink-stains.html) that is meant to replicate the smell of books, so when you’re reading your Kindle (http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Wireless-Reader-Wifi-Graphite/dp/B003DZ1Y8Q/ref=amb_link_355368562_2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=06HZ37KZ4A7YJVDQKS02&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1289229502&pf_rd_i=507846) you don’t feel like that much of a culture-killing jerk:Various Projects and Josée Lepage of Bondtoo were close collaborators and friends of [Tobias] Wong’s. We have realized his Times of New York candle in a limited edition of 1000.

The scent of the candle is newsy, with hints of guaiacwood, cedar, musk, and spice. Characterized by “a powdery note and velvet nuance,” the scent is meant to mimic the aroma of black ink on newsprint.
The candles, designed by the late Tobias Wong (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/27/fashion/27Wong.html), are available for a mere $65 from this site (http://www.projectno8.com/products/tobias-wongs-the-times-of-new-york-candle?creator=107).That's the whole article, but here is the obligatory link (http://www.inquisitr.com/120804/new-candle-replicates-print-smell-for-e-ink-users/).

The smell of old books (as opposed to newly printed books) is essentially dust and mold. Seems easy enough to replicate.

Just have an old book next to you while you read the e-reader.

Isn't the point of the e-reader that you're reading on the go? I don't suppose there's room for a candleholder in your e-reader case.

Playboy... I just read it for the smell.

Oh please, we know you just read it for the articles.

But on a side note I think Hef did miss a great scratch-and-sniff opportunity.

Larry Flynt (Hustler) did a scratch and sniff issue.

Why so he did.

Apparently, Ebay is too prude to carry it, but Amazon has two copies (http://www.amazon.com/Hustler-Magazine-September-Scratch-Centerfold/dp/B000QDVO6K) of the issue for sale. Of course they are both listed as "used" so I guess it's a buyer beware type of deal.

I saw John Water's "Polyester" with a scratch and sniff card addition. That was enough scratch and sniff to last a lifetime.

Seems like a good place to point to this article about Smell-o-vision (http://www.pcworld.com/article/230456/smellovision_wafts_closer_with_new_research_projec t.html). Because surely the 50th time someone tries to make it happen will be the time everyone else won't say, "Umm, no one wants that."

My favourite smell was the socks !! (I rented it on VCR and it came with a card - much used, but still slightly whiffy)

Oh, and when the Smell-O-Vision comes out, it will only ship with three titles:
Polyester
Soarin' Over California
WWF Wrestling.

I'm buying one !

I used to work in a printing plant that could apply scratch and sniff (it was all clean - no Hustler). One of our clients was The Gas Company and we used to print these cards that they would pass out at elementary schools so that the kids could learn what natural gas smelled like so they could identify a gas leak. No one wanted to be in the pressroom the days that these were being run
