Headliner has a hoard of friends coming over this weekend for a Lord Of The Rings marathon, all three extended editions. Combined they run for something like 11 hours so I'm guessing I'm going to need to feed them at some point.

Any suggestions on a LoTR themed meal that's teen friendly and not too much of a bitch to make?

Note: Trust me on this one, it's a gaggle of geese, a knot of toads, and a hoard of teens.

A brace of conies. A few good taters. Po-tay-toes! Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew... Lovely big golden chips with a nice piece of fried fish.

Fried calamari rings onto which you have painstakingly written elvish phrases.

From your local Japanese butcher some orc-a sashimi.

A box of Saltines where you have used Sharpie to cross out "Saltines" and have written instead: Lembas Wafers.

Unless you consider having a bunch of teenagers in your home to be a valuable hidden resource, I think you mean horde.

I'd make crêpes. If they complained that it was insufficiently thematic, I'd tell them to make their own damned butterbeer.

Also, what entertainment do you have lined up for hour three when they're no longer paying attention to the movies?

They might find a stripper to be entertaining....

Oh... And it think the collective noun for teenagers is "an attitude".

How about a build-your-own baked potato bar with shredded cheese, chopped bacon, green onions, sour cream, salsa, butter...

Alton Brown has the *perfect* baked potato method (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/the-baked-potato-recipe/index.html) IMHO.

A lot of those same ingredients could go on tortilla chips as nachos later. Maybe add some refried beans, jalapenos, olives...

Then you'll have a room full of farting teenagers.....

I was just assuming they'd be having sex.

Ooh...then Mordor-flavored (which I imagine is something like the head of a match) condoms.

Humbug.

Kids today. I offer apples, roasted chicken, potatoes, salted pork, etc. and all she wants is pizza.

I suppose I could use pepperoni to spell out "One pizza to rule them all" in Elvish.

I think you should go with cheap, easy and a lot of it. Those teenagers can really eat!

You need to make a map. Then, put broccoli in the Fangorn forest area, shortbread in the Wooodlands, the dip can go in the Dead Marshes, carrots, celery, mushrooms, etc, in Farmer Maggot's field, a hunk of ribs in Rohan, and a volcano cake in Mordor. If they don't like that, tell them tough- they should have opted for a Harold and Kumar-athon. Oooh- that would be good- they'd have to watch the movies, and go score their own White Castle........

I don't know how you'd work it in theme-wise - but my kids, family and friends love this super easy thing... Get some hot links (hillshire farm?) and a bottle of teryaki sauce - I like Mr. Yoshidas marinade and sauce. Stay clear of any that are just marinade though - it turns out too salty.

Slice the hot links slightly on the diagnal into coins and put them into a crock pot or sauce pan on the stove with enough teriyaka to cover or mostly cover. Heat them up. You'll know their ready when the sausage skin looks like it's shrunk a little on the outside... or when you can't resist anymore.

It's a great salty sweet spicy combo.

Also works with little smokies but won't have that spicy goodness. (it's not very spicy - it just adds a good amount of flavor.)

We've had good luck with a new (to me) salsa recipe this year. Throw all this into a screamin hot non stick skillet and burn it a bit: 8 roma tomatoes, 1 regular or 2 small yellow onions peeled and halved, 2 jalepenos, 1 pasilla pepper (optional).

When burned, remove and cut the tops off the tomatoes and the peppers. Remove seeds from pasilla. Leave the seeds in the jalepenos if you like your salsa to have some spiciness. Otherwise, remove seeds and membrane from just one and save in case you decide it's not spicy enough later.

Put all the veg into a food processor with the juice of a lime, a bunch of cilantro with the bottom stems ripped off in one twist of the bunch and some salt. Pulse until it's salsa! Taste to see if you want to add the rest of the jalepeno. Remember, it's warm now and will not be as spicy/salty tasting when it's cold.

And make sure you do not have any sharpy markers in the house.
