Ok here's the sitch. I have AAA car insurance. Maddie's Dad has some "cheap" place I've never in my life heard of. Here's the problem. Madz has her permit now. Per AAA if she lives at my house half the time, she has to be on my policy. She also has to be on her Dad's policy if she's going to drive his car. Ok fine.

So her Dad wants me to get another policy on my car with his fly by night insurance, as it will be cheaper. His ulterior motive here is that if we both have the same company we don't have to double insure her as we will now - this will lower his payment.

First off can you even have two policies on the same car?

Second anyone know anyone in a 50/50 custody situation with teen driving and how insurance worked out? I did some internet research and the 50/50 is what seems to be the issue, if it were say 80/20 you can just put them solely on the parents policy with primary custody.

I'm absolutely not budging on switching companies even if it's "cheaper". I know of too many people with cheap insurance who had major problems if they did actually have an accident. I've had AAA since I could drive and they were excellent to deal with in the few accident's that I have had.

You might try talking with your AAA insurance rep on this.

Other than that, I got nothing.

I know you want to deal with him as little as possible. If something happens in his car he has to deal with the cheap ass company. If it happens in your car you get to deal with AAA. I'd probably check and see how that umbrella policy works first, only if she is in your car or does it cover if she is in his too.

OR you could use this to suggest an 70%/30% or 80/20 "formal" agreement so only you have to cover her and save him even more money! She's at your house more than 50% anyway...

I wouldn't even consider switching to a cheap company. I've been in accidents where the person who hit me had cheap insurance and they were HELL to deal with. As opposed to AAA which is and always has been amazing.
