Seemed like we could use a thread for miscellanous Disney stuff that don't need their own thread, but don't really fit anywhere else.

Saw this Splash Mountain prank photo here (http://www.iheartchaos.com/post/9680225437/okay-fine-this-is-the-most-awesome-splash):

If it isn't photoshopped the screen it just a printed image. Most definitely. I don't think it is photochopped, but I agree with the printed image of the screen. Still fun though; I appreciate the humour behind the idea.

Well, I guess this is the place to mention it. Today is the release date for Kinect Disneyland Adventures. And I helped. (I got to write lots of character dialog and script some of the cinematic cut scenes.) I've played for a couple of hours, and I can report that it's about as physically exhausting as a real visit. (100% motion-based play. It's an impressively detailed re-creation of the park. You'll have to provide your own churros and Dole Whip, though.)

I'm happy to see some very nice reviews. Here's one that rated it 9/10, presumably for the family market, not the hardcore gamers.

Anyway, I hope folks get a chance to try it. If you're in the Orlando area, let me know, and I can arrange a personal demo, complete with non-stop jabber from yours truly.

Wouldn't be more wrong if it he wanted to get it in someone else? And the lines definitely couldn't have been reversed since it then becomes literally (milk meaning milk) biologically possible

Plus, saying "his milk" in reference to semen makes me feel like I'm reading bad porn on ASSTR. Any continuation of the line of thought is going to end up using "love tunnel," and awkward first person exposition, I just know it.

I heard a couple of cast member stories yesterday with the theme "why do parents take their kids to the Park when they're sick?"

They sometimes have problems with the character costumes getting infested with lice to the point that you can see the fur moving.

While working the Winnie the Pooh ride the cast member noticed one child was obviously suffering from chicken pox. They knew they would have to take the vehicle out of circulation so they asked the parents if they wanted to ride again. No. But the family got back in line and ended up in another vehicle. Again they were asked did they want to ride again. No. And they got back in line and infested yet another vehicle. So three vehicles down all because of this kid who shouldn't have been there in the first place.

The family probably thought they were doing well to wait their turn in line instead of taking advantage of an offer they didn't understand. Why were they getting something special? So they refuse the offer to ride again and wait their turn like they're supposed to.

And they probably take the kids even while sick if they've spent a lot of money planning a vacation, all of which is nonrefundable, and the kid gets sick at the last minute. No good options at that point. Though it's not fair to the people where they're traveling.

Maybe the kid didn't really have the pox...when Olivia was little, she had atypical inverted psoriosis. When she would occasionally have a bad breakout, it looked like she had chicken pox or the measles. Luckily, as she's gotten older, she's grown out of all but the mildest outbreaks. I wonder why they didn't ask the people if the kid was contagious. Is there some rule against that? I'd think they'd want to avoid some kind of outbreak centered in a Disney park.

01-25-2012, 10:09 AM
I thought by the time you actually had the visible pox they weren't contagious anymore anyway?

That said I'm sorry but I've had to cancel trips and lost money on plane tickets and reservations because my child was sick. It sucks but it happens. It's not right to expose others to your kids illness just because you had a deposit.

Agreed. Having said that, considering the number of people that send their kids to school deathly ill, I'm not surprised they don't cancel trips either.

As a kid who went to Disneyland with the chicken pox I can understand still going. I got them when we arrived, but never got ill. I felt great, but just had the spots (and only a few of those). Now we only went about once every 6 years or so for a few days. Could you imagine telling a 10 year old kid, who feels great and is within visual range of the park, "I'm sorry but you have to stay in the room. Don't worry in 6 or 7 years you can come back."? It would be one thing if you had not left yet, or if you were a local or regular visitor, ir even if you were deathly ill, but to get right outside the gates and told you could not go in?

I just like to think that we had a giant pox party and everyone was invited. lol

Sigh, I just heard that the Florida version of Snow White's Scary Adventures is closing forever, to make way for a Princess Meet & Greet. So sad. Their Snow White was unique. It never made it to the 1983-update era, but was a little more advanced than the 1955 version, being created as it was circa 1970.

The big difference was that this was a SCARY ride, very Witch-centric. She'd pop out at the cars every five feet or so, always with some hysterical line. The ride was a camp classic at Disney World and I'm so sad it's going away.

Bah on getting rid of a dark ride for a Meet & Greet area, too. LAME.

There will be a new Snow White-themed attraction, a kiddy coaster based on the 7 Dwarfs Mine. Still, my cheese is sad. :(

Our WDW Snow White did get a slight modification in the mid-nineties or so, and the number of witch appearances was reduced by several. The final scene was also redone to add a full "love's first kiss" diorama, giving the ride the happy ending it had never had.

I hate that we are losing a dark ride and gaining a character meet and greet.

Gambled and lost with T this evening.

Last time we rode PotC (with Wendybeth and company), he loved it, but was momentarily unhappy about getting splashed on the drop.

Today were in the queue and he was happy to go. But I was worried that if we got in the boat he'd be reminded of the last time and getting splashed and freak out before the drop.

So I thought I'd head that off by saying, "Remember last time, you got a little wet? But you were fine and had the ride, so you're going to be okay this time right?"

Ooops.

".........Noooooooo. No wet. No yo-ho wet. Go out!"

:(

The good news is once I got him outside and calmed, I talked to him later about the pirates and he seemed happy once again to talk about pirates, and sing the song, and say yoho. So hopefully next time it won't be a problem.

A few of you had the opportunity to meet my niece while she was visiting. I thought you might like to read the comments she emailed to Disney after her trip. (She, like a good Disney fan, went to the Town Hall to voice her suggestions, but she had so many they directed her to share them at the website.)

Hello, and salutations!
I am writing to express some comments, and a few suggestions. I am eleven years old, and in the sixth grade. I went to Disneyland with my aunt, on my visit here, to California.

I very much enjoy both of the parks, Disneyland, and Disney’s Californian adventure, with all the rides!

However, I have a few small suggestions, tweaks and so forth…

In The Disneyland Park, (The Magic Kingdom) the rides are very well done, but I find the need for small tweaks. In it’s a small world, I love how you have the Disney characters! I have a few additional Ideas…
Merida from brave, should have her own place is Scotland,
Snow white should be in Germany,
I like the rainforest. Would it be possible to make it bigger?
And make America smaller? It is way too big. We know about it already. There should only be the two original dolls as seen in that “White Room”.

Also I have a few ideas for Pirates of the Carrabin.
It is way too smoky,
It gets in your Eyes,
You can’t even see the pirate’s despise,
That is how I would go about remembering that.
Can you add more light so we can see the items better? In some places I find it too dark.

I also LOVE the new Carsland! It is so authentic! So perfect!
The malt at Flo’s is really tasty, except for the roadside gravel. It has this really bitter after taste.

Once again I would like to say I love the Disney land park!
Thank you for you time.

These are all her own ideas and notes. I didn't help at all, or convince her of anything. Which, to me, is amusing, because I have a few of the same complaints.

I went on the Matterhorn last night. Sadly, it will be my last. What was once a fun, occasionally romantic thrill ride is now a high-speed torture device. Since I can no longer straddle my legs around the person/seat in front of me, I have to pretzel-fold them into the tiny space allotted in my third of the vehicle. This also means my shins are pressed up against the steel bars that support the seat back in front of me. I also means that every bump and turn causes my shin to slam into that steel bar. I have a lovely hematoma as a souvenir of my final Matterhorn Bobsled ride.

This also means my shins are pressed up against the steel bars that support the seat back in front of me. I also means that every bump and turn causes my shin to slam into that steel bar. I have a lovely hematoma as a souvenir of my final Matterhorn Bobsled ride.

My cheese is sad. Were you in the front? The second and third seats let you slide your feet on either side of the seat in front of you.

If by 'corn chips' you mean Frito's and its imitators those are made with a thick corn meal, and don't start out as tortillas. (But, yes, it's just another variation of basically the same ingredients. Like most Ameri-Mex food)

So, my contention about the old Toasted Corn Doritos is that they had a flavor distinct from say, Tostitos, which are also fried corn tortillas. They are similar, but not identical, and its those old school plain Doritos I crave when I eat guacamole.

I too remember when Nacho Cheese Doritos was a new twist on the standard chip.

Went to the park tonight. Saw a group of 4 gentlemen (2 "younger", probably my age and 2 "older") dressed in nice suits. At least a couple had bow ties. I got behind them in the entry gate line, heard one of the younger ones relaying Disney "trivia"*. I then saw the same one pull out a Club33 card as his pass. Inside, I saw another group of people also dressed very formally. And later a third group. Me thinks something was up at Club33 tonight.

* I put "trivia" in quotes for a reason. The first thing I heard him say was the old story of Walt walking the park and whenever he'd see a few pieces of trash on the ground in the same location he'd tell facilities to add a trash can. Legit trivia. Then he said, "Here's a fun fact. When they were building Pirates of the Caribbean they had all the skeletons made from fake bones. But they didn't like the way they looked. So they went to UCLA or USC and got real bones to make all the skeletons out of. Later they got better at making fake bones, but there are 2 skeletons that are still real." o.0

Alex
07-26-2012, 05:26 AM
I have no idea of the accuracy of it (Imagineers are just as susceptible to folklore as the rest of us), but Imagineer Jason Surrell seems to be the source of the story in his book Pirates of the Caribbean: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies.

Skeletons in the Closet - and the Basement

Because the original Imagineering team felt that the faux skeletons of were just too unconvincing, the Grotto sequence originally featured real human remains obtained from the UCLA Medical Center. The skeletons were later returned to their countries of origin and given a proper burial when a new generation of Imagineers replaced them with equally convincing facsimiles.

I don't necessarily find the idea of real bone skeletons that hard to believe. They aren't actually that difficult to get your hands on and I imagine it was probably much easier in the '60s than now (India used to be the main supplier of them but they banned export of human bones in the '80s, China did the same about a decade ago).

The part I find harder to accept is that when done with them they'd actually be returned to countries of origin for burial.

RStar
07-26-2012, 06:47 AM
Do/did they keep track of whose bones they are? Like a code stamped on the bottom of a foot related to a registry or something? Is there even a need for real ones anymore (with mass produced facimilies possible)?

I agree, Alex. If they have no reference number or identifier, a skeleton would show up at some address with a note:

"This person came from this part of the world. Please be sure it gets a proper burial. Thank you."

How could they, and who would pay for it?

With a statement like that, I would wonder about the rest of what Jason Surrell said.

Oh, and the principal difference between the corn chip and the tortilla chip is that the corn in a tortilla chip has undergone a process known as nixtamalization, which involves processing the raw corn with quicklime; and that the corn chip, which is not made from a tortilla, but from corn meal, has been processed into a particular shape, typically a small scoop. This is why there is a differnet flavor to a corn chip like Fritos, when compared to a tortilla chip or "strips" (which are tortillas cut in strips rather than wedges).

This was posted to a cast recordings mailing list I subscribe to. I thought it might interest some-a-y'all.The 1970 Disney animated film "the Aristocrats" is getting its blu-ray debut on August 21st. There are two new bonuses (in addition to the ones on the previous DVD releases) and one should be of interest to folks here.

It's a 9-minute piece called "The Lost Open" which has Richard Sherman introducing a two-part song that was to be the original opening for the film. It is called "How Much You Mean To Me/Court Me Slowly" and is sung by the butler Edgar and a deleted character (the maid). They found the original story boards and a demo recording by the Sherman brothers and melded the two together.

The previous DVD had a deleted song "She Never Felt Alone" and that seven-minute piece is here too.

The only other new feature is a "Oui Oui Marie" Music video remix.

In other Disney news, according to an Al blurb on "that site," the Aulani resort on Hawaii is doing horribly and is being run by monkeys. They're offering 70% room discounts to cast members thru Christmas in the hopes the place won't seem like a ghost town to the few paying guests.

Anyone besides me think a Disney hotel with no Disney park is a dumb idea, and - if in Hawaii - placing it on one of the less-visited islands an even dumber one?

alphabassettgrrl

Oahu is hardly a "less visited" island. It accounts for almost half of all visit days by tourist (out of something like 5.5 million tourist days about 2.5 million were spent on Oahu).

And a Disney hotel with no Disney park seems to have done okay at Hilton Head and Vero Beach.

So if if it isn't performing I'd tend to think it must be something else (and a prime candidate for me would be not that it is on Oahu, but that it is in a lame part of Oahu, kind of removed from any of the stuff you're likely to want to do on the island).

A mom I know told the story of shlepping her family to WDW. The apex of which was, "We get there, and let me tell you, it's EXACTLY like Disneyland. EXACTLY THE SAME. The layout, the rides, everything. I mean, there was no reason to go there, at all! What a waste of time and money!!"

Muggles.

What's weird is they only went to Epcot.

Magic Kingdom is exactly like Disneyland until you start looking for rides that aren't in that park, or where they "belong". Haunted Mansion: I'm looking at you!

It's the same, but completely different!

"...and I hear Disneyland in Paris is the same too!"

At which point I could not hold my tongue any longer, as I've actually been there.

I don't blame you, don't think I could have held my tongue either. Obviously they skipped the other 3 WDW parks because I guarantee Animal Kingdom is nothing like Disneyland. I guess they have Bugs Life but that is the only similarity.

If anyone tells me Disneyland is exactly like the Magic Kingdom at WDW or any other copy, I would not believe them if they told what color their own eyes were.

Did you know the Walt Disney Family Museum recently started its own podcast (http://www.waltdisney.org/podcast)? Episode 2 is very much worth a listen. Tom Hanks talks about playing Walt Disney, and his own childhood experiences of Disneyland, and Walt Disney on TV.

Disney confirms Frozen stage musical in development (http://popwatch.ew.com/2014/01/13/disney-frozen-musical-broadway/)
With Aladdin set for a Broadway premiere this February and The Hunchback of Notre Dame long in the works, Disney is looking further ahead to another candidate to bring from the screen to the stage: Frozen.

Disney Theatrical Productions has confirmed to EW that Frozen is in early development for the stage. Disney CEO and chairman Bob Iger dropped the hint to Fortune that discussions have begun to develop the wintry 2013 musical—which is breaking box office records and inspiring all kinds of ebullient fan reactions—into a full-fledged theater production, though he did not specify whether the show would be built for Broadway or as one of the many theatrical attractions at Disney's parks (where things like Aladdin: A Musical Spectaular [sic] and Finding Nemo – The Musical have wound up).

"We're not demanding speed," Iger told Fortune in regards to a time frame for the show. "We're demanding excellence."

Among Frozen's promising stage merits are a winning score by Book of Mormon and Avenue Q co-creator Robert Lopez, as well as a voice cast that includes bona fide Broadway singers Idina Menzel (Wicked), Jonathan Groff (Spring Awakening), Josh Gad (The Book of Mormon) and Santino Fontana (Cinderella).
