After much musing and mulling, and as much as I love the iPad, I'm getting a Toshiba Thrive (http://us.toshiba.com/tablets/thrive/10-inch/) for Xmas this year.

I'm new to android apps and stuff. Any advice on any cool, useful apps I should install?

I'm assuming I should install the AVG app for the tablet, as well?

I use Lookout as my security, not AVG. Works seamlessly. And Lookout has a "locate lost phone" feature. Which I've actually used.

I personally use a 3rd party browser (Dolphin HD) because it allows tabbed browsing and can mimic a desktop browser for sites that give dumbed down versions that are missing features to mobile browsers.

Adobe flash player if you want to take advantage of flash website content.

Molome is my favorite novelty photo app

Thank you BtD, CM and GD. All wonderful suggestions!

I'm really excited to have a new toy on the way. Not that I need another distraction, I'll bet I will read more now that I will have a kindle app.

I use Lookout too and love the free app of the day at a Amazon app store. I have found many fun distractions with the free apps. I love the puzzle type ones.

I wanted to update, if you care, I absolutely love the tablet. Having lived with (and lusting after) my roomie's iPad for the last year, I lust no longer. This droid tablet (http://us.toshiba.com/tablets/thrive/10-inch/) is simply fabulous and does everything I want and probably a million other things I have not even discovered (or downloaded from Android Market). Yeah, it is WiFi only, but my office has Wifi and there are plenty of hotspots if I really need to access the web outside of the home.

I've downloaded plenty of reading material on the Kindle app, watched movies via Netflix streaming. Hooked it up to the TV for fun via the HDMI (worked like a charm) and have only one minor quibble about the speaker quality. They're not nearly as nice as the iPad externals, they sound kind of thin adn tinny. I've fiddled with settings and bought this (http://www.amazon.com/AYL-Portable-Speaker-System-Tablet/dp/B0052NZYXI) for the times I actually need to have the speaker. Watching movies in bed with headphones is great, sound is fabulous.

I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone needing or wanting a tablet. It's a swell toy!

I'm glad you are enjoying your tablet, they are a lot of fun aren't they!

I bought a keyboard for mine but don't really need it. I love the free app of the day from Amazon.

I picked up a Nexus 7 today to act as my travel companion on my upcoming trip.

Reviving this dead thread. My Toshiba tablet is limping along now. Behaving a little like a balky horse some days. Loads of apps just crash, etc. Etc.

Any suggestions for a new one? Should I just go with an iPad? Now that I've got an iPhone (21st century at last) at least that will be seamless. Is the no flash even an issue any longer?

Get an iPad. You know you want to. Is there any other reason more important than that? ;)

The few times I still run into this problem hasn't really hindered me at all. The only app that crashes for me is Facebook (I get this on both my iPhone and my iPad). Other than FB crashing and a weird problem with one event in iCalendar (I can't delete a repeating event and I've twice been told that the only way to get rid of it would be to wipe my iPad and reload: I decided dismissing the event every two weeks was easier), I've had no problems with mine (which I've had a little longer than you've had your tablet).

Walmart has a Nextbook (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Nextbook-8-Tablet-with-8GB-Memory-and-Google-Mobile-Services/23554123) for $99 that looks pretty cool. Anyone know anything about it?

My Nook does Flash. I hope whichever of them you choose, that it makes you happy. The guys at work all have iPads, but they're all Apple fanboys. Apple would like you to believe that it's the standard, but as far as web surfing, email, FB, and the limited number of apps that I actually use, the Nook is great.
