I took a quick trip down to the mall today and checked out the new'ish visitors center at the US Capital.

The backside of democracy.

(Yes, technically it's the front but everyone knows it from the mall side)

The grand entrance hall of the Visitors Center (and about the only place inside you are allowed to take photos.)

The Line you stand in if you just show up for a tour.

Keep that in mind if you are planning a trip out here.

Lunch at the restaurant in the new visitors center. Pretty darn tasty, but also $18.50 total.

We've mentioned here before that the reflecting pool is 101 for a two year rehab but now they are redoing the entire mall from the Washington monument to the Capital as well. For the next few months this is what it will look like.

The National Gallery of art is also getting some work done. I'll have to check into what exactly they are doing.

All in all the city should be looking quite spiffy by the next inauguration.

Nice! Thanks for the pictures- it's about as close as I'm likely to get in the near future, unfortunately.

Our Nation's Capital is one of my prime vacation destinations (along with the Land O' Lashies) in spite of some of the local residents (in Maryland, not Australia).

Geeze dude, the White House is in DC not Maryland. What a rube.

I still have this reflex reaction of looking at picture of DC and thinking wow! I wish I could get back there again! Just for a half-second before I remember that I work there.
