I plan on moving down to the LA area this spring. I am searching for apt's on the internet. Most of the places that I found is too much $$$ for one person to pay for rent.
So I found this site called Roomates.com. I found of couple of single girls my age who need roomates by March. I've e-mailed 2 girls so far. I would get my own room and would only being paying $500 or less each month for the rent.
Is this a good idea?

Yeah, just don't watch "Single White Female"...:p
Seriously, though- see if theywill allow a trial period before signing any lease, so you can see if you're compatible. I had several roomates from hell...

What area of LA are you looking to move to? I'm kind of looking around as well, though trying to find a place around Santa Monica. It's tough... the rent alone would be about 50% of my income!

Any area, it really doesn't matter. I just don't want to pay more than $600 a month for rent.

Oops~! I can't spell. It's suppose to be Roommates, not Roomates. My bad.

Wendybeth's idea of a trial living arrangement sounds like a good one. I don't know how well that goes over with the people already occupying the apartment, though... they could want a roommate immediately and figure if they chose you, you'd mesh well.
Me personally, I looked there, but I don't think I'd be comfortable picking a roommate through a website. Mostly because I've lived with family all my life (to whom I'm very close to and lived with relatives through college) and really need to know who I'm living with. So when I think about it, there are only two non-family people I know I could feel comfortable living with.
Depending on what area you're looking to settle into, you'll find that the typical range of splitting rate (that is, if you get your own room, in a 2-room place) is around $700. Even some borderline questionable areas can be pricey too (don't know why, proximity to somewhere?). But $600 is not out of the question, of course.

Would they agree to meet with you before hand so you guys can get to know each other a little before committing? I'd probably do it to save the money, but I'm a pretty trusting person. I'd be scared of living with someone that would trash the place or was a kleptomaniac or something though. Do they already have the apartment? If they've been living there for a while then I guess you could see how they live before moving in.

Of course I would want to meet anyone 1st before I even move in with them.
This is my only choice, really! My bf wants to stay up in NorCal and I really want to move down the LA for school and work. He is okay with me moving down here for atleast a year.
And SoCal is sooo pricey these days, that I have to find a roommate. The 2 girls that I e-mailed already have a place. One apt is in HB and the other is in Coasta Mesa.

I would also check out losangeles.craigslist.org .... that's how I found my last few roommates.
