So it appears the Mt. Soledad war memorial thing down here in SD is still ongoing, the city council voted last night to put its future in the hands of the voters and should be on the ballot during our july special election for mayor........... But one thing that is bothersome, if people are protesting that the cross should stay because it is a war memorial, why are the religious fanatics up there singing, praying and protesting it. Seems to me that if the religious community wanted the cross to stay, they would be better furthering the cause by taking on a more indifferent attitude to the memorial. By their presence there, it seems it means more to them as a religious symbol then as a war memorial, and that is why the contorversy is there in the first place. So it doesn't seem the religious community is advancing the cause by taking such a strong stand on the cross, it seems far more counter-productive as now any opponents to the cross have more fire power to attack with. Just my thoughts on the subject, and since this is a SD thing, don't expect too many of you to even know what the heck I'm talking aboot.

This happened a few years ago here in San Francisco. There's a massive cross on top of Mount Davidson. It's the highest spot in the city (it's also the hill upon which I live). There was a furor because the cross is on city property. Long story short, the city leased the tiny area around the base of the cross to a church - the rest of the land is still a city park. The editorials and attitudes disappeared quickly.

Oh jeez, is that still going on? I remember the controversy about that cross when I was in college in the mid '90, I can't believe that hasn't been settled yet....

Damn. I thought this was a thread about how tired you were.

Umm I guess I could say: STUPID!!!!!!! To me all symbols (flags, crosses, pentagrams, star of davids etc...) are just items until a person puts a meaning behind them. It doesn't bother me that people burn a flag. It probably means more to them that they are burning a peice of cloth that has the pattern of our flag then it does to me.

There's currently an ACLU issue in FL.. 4 public high schools want to have graduation in a church. It's a building! You aren't the religion of the building unless you have that faith!

I think a thread about being tired would be good....
