So I finally broke down and bought an Mini IPod. I've been wanting something to take with me to the gym and on my daily walks that is small and lite so the Mini fit the bill. I was extremely excited to finally dispose of my huge handheld cd player. I installed the Ipod software, I already had ITunes, and I got an error message after I installed. I've gone to the Apple website and tried every one of their fixes to get it to work. Still nothing. I've uninstalled tons of software, reinstalled ITunes several times, reinstalled IPod several times etc. Still NOTHING! I'm so frustrated!!

I've got a friend coming to try and resolve the problem. I just wanted to know if I'm the only person who's had this type of problem. And what everyone's thoughts are about the IPod in general.

We have one and love it, until today when our FM modulator/charger fried it. Luckily it is new enough we could take it back, but we had already spent several hours loading it up with tunes and now we have to start over. I don't just mean fire up the computer and download either. My DH for some dumb reason had deleted the music files off the computer and thought he'd be able to restore them through the mini Ipod.....we'll it's all gone now (and I don't think he can do that anyways).....DORK!

So far, there had no errors...I'm complainging with no help for you...sorry.

mistyisjafo, are you on a work computer with Novell or some other login system installed?

And what version of iTunes are you running? The Mini requires version 4.7 or later (It never hurts to cover the basics.)

What's the error?

Basically I plug in the Mini IPod to the computer. ITunes is supposed to start up, it doesn't. When I open ITunes I get "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software." I went to the Apple website and found this error and the fixes that it gives but I've tried it all several times and nothing gets it to work right. Luckily I have a friend who's an IT person & he promised me he'd figure it out.

Nope, just my hope Windows XP.

Yep, got that too. Even downloaded the current software off the website.

It's a little frustrating to say the least!

OK, here's what I suggest: ship the iPod to me. I will perform rigorous testing by uploading music onto the iPod and listening to it until I am satisfied that the unit is fully functional. At the conclusion of this testing (which should last no more than 1 or 2 years), I will return the unit with a full operational report.

Since you are on a Wintel box, I cannot offer much help (I typed out a litany of ideas, but then realized you weren't on a Mac).

One other thought: before you INstalled, were you able to Uninstall the previous versions. I am not as savvy on the PC, but there should be a relatively painless way to uninstall before re-installing. It sounds like there us a corrupted file associated with iTunes that is remaining after all teh re-installs.

Yeah....uninstall everything, then reinstall everything (install iTunes first then iPod updater)

Tried it. In fact went through and deleted the original .dll files and NADA. Somethings corrupted all right! I know it's not me. Hahah!!
