View Full Version : And we should have paid $500 because...

On Saturday, we fulfilled our LoT destiny and met Shag. We got up early, got to the park at opening, stood in line to purchase the set of 5 8x10 prints of the new "land" Shag paintings, then stood in line to get them autographed. It was great, he was really nice, let us take a picture with him. Much fun.
But here's my question...why the heck would people have paid to go to the event the night before? If I had paid, I'd be really pissed off. Every piece of merchandise was still in stock, including the LE stuff. Even at the end of the day, they were not sold out of anything. So access to LE merchandise clearly wasn't worth the price. And all we had to do was stand in line for an hour and we got to meet him and get autographs. What exactly is Disney thinking when they set something up like this? It's got to piss people off that they paid for essentially nothing.

Merchandise events are always a crap shoot - you do get first option to buy something, which sometimes pays off, sometimes doesn't. Disney though is usually good and making the event special in some way, so you pay for that experience. Also, there is usually some swag exclusive to the event - I believe for this one it was the autographed postcards of the event.

The pics I've seen from the even looked amazing! They really did an outstanding job on the decor, food and music. They gave away lots of shag swag including postcards and tiles that seemed cool from the description, but I haven't see pics yet. I'm not sure I'd value the even at $500, but I can certainly see why people went and found it worth it. It seemed like a VERY Shaglalicious event.

Well, it's not as bad as I thought. I dug up the event info, and it was "only" $150. That's not toooooo outrageous, I suppose. The $400 option included park tickets and a hotel stay. I still think it a minor slap in the face to have the biggest draw (the artist signing) so readily available the next day. But hey, this is our first "big" merchandise purchase, well, ever, so what do I know.

Even I got a print signed, and I wasn't even there. ;)

Damn, once again I'm as clueless as a baby seal. Would someone pull out a club and hit me over the head with a clue here? Shag?

Ok, well, the descriptions I have read of the event make it seem worth $150, if you've got money to throw around a bit. Considering that, between Shag swag, three meals, and cocktails, I spent over $300 at the resort on the "free" Shag day ... I'd have to put myself in that category of throw-around, if I'd care to admit it to myself.
