Chris will be conferencing and working in Chicago again in September and I will be joining him for a few days.
I believe the weather will be nice enough for strolling and other outdoor activities.
We pretty much know what seanky restaurants and bars we will be visiting, but I'm not sure what other activities I wanat to take part in. There will also be days where I am on my own.
We're staying at the W - Lakeshore, which is as central as our usual haunt, The Drake. But, I've "done" Michigan Ave, Navy Pier, the Park, etc pretty throughly.
Any suggestions?

How about going to see the Toulouse-Lautrec and Montmarte exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago. http://www.artic.edu/aic/exhibitions/toulouse_lautrec/lagoulue.html
You could check out the Gene Siskel Film Center and see what's showing while you're there http://www.artic.edu/webspaces/siskelfilmcenter/
You could attend an event as part of Stirring Things Up In Chicago. "Stirring Things Up In Chicago offers a feast for the senses as we pair our distinctive restaurants, world-renowned cuisine, remarkable chefs, culinary schools, food producers, retailers and more, with the city's culinary, visual, literary and performing arts." http://www.877chicago.com/summer_sept.html

My favorite memory of Chicago was eating at Rosebud (http://www.rosebudrestaurants.com/therosebud.htm) (on Taylor, not the one on Rush Street). Very old-school Chicago. Bring an appetite!

I'll wait for the local store to open and for a 10 year old companion to accompany me. ;)

I shall do that!
I actually know the city pretty well. I've done a few things around the area, but I'm know I'm missing quite a bit. It is an absolutely WONDERFUL city. I'd move there in an instant. Although, where we stay is always near Michigan Ave, so who wouldn't be happy?

If I had a couple of free hours in the afternoon - I'd head on over to Dusty Groove. Not only are they the swankiest record store on the web (http://www.dustygroove.com/), but they have an awesome store in Chi-town.

Very cool - but I have a hrad time envisioning myself loading up my suitcase with vinyl - even if it is the only media I have hooked up to my PC these days. I must resist.

OMG! It is a GREAT city! I would move there in a heartbeat - and I wouldn't more to New York City.
It's really one of my top 5 cities - easily in the US, probably in the top 10 in the world.

Ok, I'll take you're word for it. I'm not really excited about the prospect of going to Chicago but I'm happy to be seeing my friend. It's just not one of those places I've put on my list to see. But you only live once right!

Chicago!
If I can make it there, then I can make it there...
You don't need to snipe at poor little NYC to plug Chi-town... unless you want to armwrestle in the Parking Lot....

So not to gloat but I just got the best hook up for my trip to Chicago. I happen to know someone who lives in a very nice part of town and they are letting me (and my friends) stay at their place. I guess its by the pier?? From what I've been told it's a very swanky part of town.
Now I'm excited to go!

By the Navy Pier? That is a swanky part of town. We are staying nearer to the pier this time around at the W on Lakeshore Dr.
From there you can walk to the Pier, Michigan Ave and catch the El to all sorts of places. Let us know if you want some swanky restaurant recommendations. Chris has quite a list he has checked out.

Cool thanks! The best part is that the people who are letting us stay there are also writing up a list of places we must go. We'll only be there for four days!!! How could I get it all in?? O, and they are stocking their bar in our honor! :snap: :snap:

Well, now that we're back I thought we should share a few pics. (http://photos.xenarchy.com/displayimage.php?album=22&pos=17) Most are from my weekend off when we hit Millenium park on a gorgeous day. Not Afraid still has a few pics to add - but you get the picture ;)

Have fun!!!!!! Stop by the Vosges Chocolitier in the same mall as Nordstroms on Michigan (ssecong floor) and buy a sinfully delicious chocolate bar or truffel - or two.
