Driving home listening to NPR (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4814304), they mentioned that Google has launched their own IM client, GoogleTalk (http://www.google.com/talk/). Since I already use AIM, Yahoo, MSN Messenger, and ICQ - I figured I needed this as well. So now I have a gmail account as well as another IM client - anyone else using this? If so, you can find me listed as "cemeinke" - google wouldn't let me use a "€" symbol.

I went with the always controversial "Moonliner@gmail.com". I like the streamlined signup and interface. Since I already had a gmail account there was zero signup involved and as far as I can tell it did not try and load any other toolbars or such like some other IM clients I could name…

I'm sure I'll download this when I get home...trying to come up with a new name without defaulting to mirror my husband ;)
What do you guys think of it so far? What does it have that the other IMs don't?

What it "has" is what it doesn’t. It's a very vanilla offering. One fellow I was chatting with already complained about the lack of :)  :( :D :p etc... Like the google homepage it's a very simple affair. Just chat.

It's more what it doesn't have. Like most Google products, it's barebones. Very simple interface, no bells and whistles. Just chat and voice.
An interesting difference is that it treats all your chat windows as a single window. You can move them around and resize them individually, but they if you either have all your chat windows in front or none. Then you hit "tab" to switch between them. I haven't decided if I like that or not.
EDIT: Oooh, I take it back. You can choose whether it's all together or individual windows. And it's easy to switch between the two modes. Nice.

It takes the standard smilies and makes them blue and bold, but they remain in their classic ascii charater form.

I hope they add it to trilian soon. I prefer just using one messenger and trillian handles most of them.

Apparently, Google Talk is not available for Mac users, so I may be reached by phone.
I can also be reached by door but only if you are a few feet from my apartment.
Lastly, I can be reached when we are in the same room by simply saying, "George." I will then turn my head slightly and say, "What?" *
If I were a fish I could be reached by hook.
