Many people had abandon their pets because of Katrina. Now many of those pets are wandering the streets hungry and homeless or worse yet stuck inside of their homes with nothing to eat or drink. Others are haveing to tread water to stay alive. The Humane Society has a team that goes and help pets in disater areas. Most people can fend for themselfs but pets cannot and they need our help. If you want to find out more on how to help animals in the disaster area click here (http://www.hsus.org/) . Thanks.

Poor animals. :( One of my first thoughts when I found out about the hurricane and the flooding was about the mass animal casualties there will be as people are forced to abandon their pets. As noble as the Humane Society's efforts are, and I wish them success, I don't think I could donate to them instead of an organization to help the people that are still stranded without food and water. I feel so bad for all the stranded pets. I hope as many as possible are saved.

Thats okay if you don't feel that you can donate because people are still starving, I can totally understand that. Mostly what I am trying to do is raise awarness of this situation since most people don't think about what happens to these poor animals that depend on us during times like this. I myself have already donated to my Church's efforts to help people as well as the red cross. People always should come first. But I have an dog in my life that is just as important to me as any person, she is part of my family and I will do anything to protect her and I know that there are people in the south that feel the same way abouy their pets that had to abandon them. I feel so bad for these people that the least I could do was try to help.

I totally feel the same way, boingo. I wish I had more to give. I feel so guilty about going to DL this weekend and having a lavishly good time when there are so many people and animals in desperate need.

In one of the links posted on the other hurricane thread there was a comment about a little boy who tried to get on the bus with his dog, but the police had to take the dog away. It said the little boy cried until he vomited. Not much makes me shred a tear, but I cried at reading that. I know that the dog is just roaming the streets now, if he's alive at all. I picture myself having to leave my big babies and it breaks my heart.

I do hope that the Humane Society gets all the help it needs (which it won't), but there is only so much to go around.

Thank you SO MUCH Boingonut for your kind, caring and concerned post! I'm a fellow animal lover and honestly, when I saw the devastation of Katrina I thought about all the frightened animals. :(

I have a Labrador Retriever who is my LIFE. She is my little girl and my best pal. In times like these I look into her big and brown, soulful (and often beggy :) ) eyes and feel such a surge of overprotection. In all honesty, I'd be lost without her. She protects me & I protect her. We make the bestest team. I know exactly how you feel.

Thank you again, Boingonut! :snap:

If you can only donate to one charity please it SHOULD be one that helps people. There are still people starving and dying out there that need your help! That said Hopfully the shelters will start to be more pet friendly in the future since actully it would help more people. Many people stay away from the shelters because they have the leave thier pets to almost certin death so they choose to ride out the storm in thier houses. If they would alow pets in the shelters then less people would have to be rescued or even killed in disasters like this since more people would be in the shelters. Would it have been that hard to designate a section of say the super dome to pet owners? It would take just a little extra effort and it would have saved the lives of people as well as pets, its a win win situation.

I don't know what I would do if I had to abandon my Sandy, I don't know if I would do it or not...I don't even want to think about it. :( Damn I'm depressed :(

PLEASE DONT FEEL GUILTY!

I'm fortunate I can stay at a hotel - and when I called the travel agent to find me a room while I was driving away on Sunday morning (assuming I'd be back in a week - hmmm, not quite) - it had to be a hotel that accepted animals. Jaxie is very important to me, and is helping me through this so much.
