Back in the eighties, I couldn't get enough of Kate Bush, especially her more experimental grooves. (The Dreaming and Hounds of Love albums, specifically) She's been completely off the radar for more than a decade but is now bouncing back with a new double album in November. The curious can check out the first single on iTunes. It's called King of the Mountain. I just downloaded it, and I'm happy to report that it's weird in a completely wonderful way.
I hope the whole album is good. I didn't get much out of her last two releases. (The Sensual World and The Red Shoes - a few good tracks, but I never put them on at all.)

Ohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh!!
flippyshark, you have made my day, if not year! I LOVE Kate Bush!! I own absolutely everything she's ever recorded! Like you, I never listened to The Red Shoes as much as her earlier albums. I loved & played The Kick Inside, Hounds Of Love and The Whole Story more then anything. Never For Ever, Lionheart, The Dreaming..all amazing albums! :)
I'm so excited!! I've really missed Kate.
I have In Search Of Peter Pan playing inside my mind right now. That song always makes me think of Disneyland! :D
Major snaps, flippyshark! :snap: :snap: :snap: :snap:

OH BOY! I had heard she was recording. Kate Bush has been in my regular rotation since the late 70's. I remember gathering in fron of the TV in 1978 to see her perform on SNL. This is really exciting news. Sure wish I had iTunes.
I wonder if she'll tour? She's one of the few favorite performers that I never saw live.

Boy how I loved Kate Bush too! I even took Super-8 films of her on t.v., when they show her early videos (Wuthering Heights, Man With the Child in His Eyes) on the late night rock shows. Waaaay back before VCRs. Of course there was no sound, so I'd try to sync them up with the records to watch them. And I still have them, but alas, no projector.
She was an early hero of mine -- so great she's back! Too bad itunes doesn't work for me so I'll have to wait for the official release...

Kate only did one tour, waaay back in her earliest days. There is a video of that show, KATE BUSH LIVE AT THE HAMMERSMITH ODEON, which shows a very young Kate performing almost exclusively from her first album, THE KICK INSIDE. She has lots of costume changes and choreography. All the while, she was quickly recording a second album, LIONHEART, and dealing with her sudden popularity.
The experience just about did her in, and she was a long time recuperating. (The title of her third album, NEVER FOR EVER, may have been her answer to the question, when will you tour again?)
She has made a few appearances at charity concerts, and you can find a video of her performing Running Up That Hill on one of the Secret Policeman's Ball videos. (All of these can be dug up on VHS if you look around.) But apart from that, Kate is a studio musician, like the Beatles in their most creative days.
Now that I've had a few more listens to King of the Mountain, I have to say, I really love it. It's available on iTunes, Yahoo! Music Unlimited, Sony Connect, Walmart.com, Rhapsody, Napster, and MSN Music, so if you have access to any of the above, check it out.
The lyrics are kind of hard to hear clearly, but they're really cool:
King of the Mountain
Could you see the aisles of women?
Could you see them screaming and weeping?
Could you see the storm rising?
Could you see the guy who was driving?
Could you climb higher and higher?
Could you climb right over the top?
Why does a multi-millionaire
Fill up his home with priceless junk?
The wind is whistling
The wind is whistling
Through the house
Elvis are you out there somewhere
Looking like a happy man?
In the snow with Rosebud
And king of the mountain
Another Hollywood waitress
Is telling us she's having your baby
And there's a rumour that you're on ice
And you will rise again someday
And that there's a photograph
Where you're dancing on your grave
The wind is whistling
The wind is whistling
Through the house
Elvis are you out there somewhere
Looking like a happy man?
In the snow with Rosebud
And king of the mountain
The wind it blows
The wind it blows the door closed
