A Japanese team of scientists has managed to get the first ever image of a giant squid in the wild.

I think this is really amazing news. Ralphie is going to be really excited about this one when he reads his email on his research cruise. (He's a marine biologist who studies the immune systems of squid.)

This is very cool! Creatures of the deep have always fascinated me. I'm surprised neither of the scientists were named Nemo though. ;)

On a related note.can someone tell my how these two news stories are related?

It's a little known fact that Jennifer Jason Leigh used to be called 'Squid Girl' in high school by her friends.

Hehe, that's funny. I bit and clicked the link. Subtitle to the story is "Star reportedly wed ‘The Squid and the Whale’ director Noah Baumbach". So there ya' go. Squid.

OK. There are two things about these reports that concern me.

The photo caption says that the giant squid is tangled up in the line. That's usually not a good thing for a sea creature.
The video shows a tenticle laying on the table in the lab the reporter states that the researcher first noticed that "This giant tenticle had gripped onto his research vehicle".
Did the squid die after being tangled? How did they get the tenticle? Is the squid still freely terrorizing Nemo somewhere in the deep?

Edit: I suppose if I read the entire BBC article, I'd get the story, huh?

The squid finally escaped, but lost a tentacle.

Yeah, the report is a bit sketchy. I read a different account that simply said the squid was going after some bait on the line, not that it was tangled in it. And I'm pretty sure the tentacle on the table is a file-photo. (the caption mentions it's from the Royal Society via Reuters).

Now I want to see a Colossal Squid!

The World Book Encyclopedias I had growing up had a great overlay map of the creatures of the sea. The deep sea overlay was always my favorite. Fascinating stuff!

Heehee, the video uses two shots of the squid like a one page flipbook, back and forth. Bummer they don't have any real video of it. But wow, I can't believe they actually got images! So freakin' cool.

This is fantastic! Wonderful! I recall them finding evidence of the giant squid before, but I believe it was dead. That discovery spawned my favorite unpurchased t-shirt:

The Jaguar Shark!

Interesting that you should mention that.

Link (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/09/0907_050907_glowingshark.html). :)

September 7, 2005—Science never sleeps, even when facing down a hurricane. Luckily for a handful of deep sea explorers, they've found a rather unusual nightlight.

This still photo from a video taken on August 22 shows the first visual evidence of the fluorescent chain catshark. Scientists taking part in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Operation Deep Scope 2005 expedition found the three-foot-long (one-meter-long) animal on the sea floor of the Gulf of Mexico.

The fluorescent shark was initially observed—though not captured on film—during last year's Deep Scope expedition. Starstruck researchers noted that the glowing menace bears an uncanny resemblance to the fictional jaguar shark pursued by Bill Murray in the 2004 movie The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

The Jaguar Shark!

Doesn't he work for Galpin? Isn't he the salesman who sold me my Jag? It sure felt like it at the time! Hardy har har. Just kiddin'. :D

Very interesting link, GD! It made me shudder just a little bit. My Dad and I actually just had a HUGE discussion on sea monsters the other day. He was the one who told me about this squid. Then, he told me to google sea monsters and look at some of the creepy stuff that comes up. So, I did!

I'm actually reading about sea serpents while I post. I just finished reading all about the masbate monster, which I had to be honest, at first glance, read as "masturbate monster" to me. The masturbate monster does exist, that I know. I think they call him "ex-boyfriend". :D

HOLY COW! I pulled a Carlie (thank you! :) ) and CHOKED! Um, I think we SO dated the same guy- Mr. mid-afternoon "break". :D

I love how this thread has transformed. From man-eating squid to masturbation. Everything comes full-circle. We need an ex-boyfriend thread- STAT.

Until then, I'm sharing my new favorite site. Because I've become a sea monster addict...

I hope you know you made my night when I read that! :snap: :D I thought I'd choke!!

My last ex-boyfriend was a masturbation happy viperfish. Now, if I could just work the giant squid in there, I'd have all degrees covered! Oh! I know! Maybe he secretely IS a giant squid. He's slimy, and he has no hands or fingers, just tentacles. It would explain why his immature ass never called again. You know, those suction cups can't dial and all.

Actually? I have a much better chance of having a giant squid phone me. And to be honest? I'd much rather talk to the giant squid. He's probably a better listener. ;) :p

I'm DYING over the thought of naughty bathroom squid! Mmm..work 'dem tentacles. :p

Hey, did anybody happen to view the Trifecta on the Discovery Channel that was Killer Squid, Killer Jellyfish & Killer Ants? I Tivo'd all three Saturday evening. If you happen to get the chance, catch Killer Squid. It's all about the killer Humbolts and it is extremely facsinating. And if the Irukandji Jellyfish doesn't leave your jaw gaping, I don't know what will.

Okay, I'm geeking out. But I'm OBSESSED with sea monsters. And Godzilla, but that's a whole other thread. ;)
