I have been saying they should do this for years.....the strict calling of holding and the elimination of the two line rule are especially good ideas.

If we can get them to take down the stupid net, that would also improve my enjoyment!
and have a bunch of guys just skating out there together with no purpose?!??!?!?!
Why not just get a ticket to the ice capades....

Wow, that's pretty drastic. The kinds of stuff they illustrated can be seen on almost every posesion in the NHL. If they really do enforce that strictly, it will completely change the game.
But, a more important question...could they have picked a worse guy to narrate that video?

I doubt it.....he could have been describing how to put up dry wall and nobody would have noticed the diff.

eeeesh...the Net ABOVE the glass at the ends... But that was brought in after the horrible accedent in Columbus where a little girl was killed, so they had to do something.
As for the Rules. Teams with Speed are GOING TO ROCK! 2 line Passes! YES! Tag-up offsides, YES! A Goalies ABILITY not his HUGE Equiptment will make the save, YES! O.T. Shoot-outs, we will see. Goalie 'Zone' behind the net, we will see. Having played the game for years....years ago now, I can't wait to see it!
GO BRUINS- GO SHARKS! :D :snap:

Yes this is going to be great.....I am hoping a new Hockey Superstar will emerge from this ........my money is on Marian Hossa of Atlanta....that guy is fast and has a touch with the puck unmatched among his contemporaries.
WHL hockey up here in the NW has already started and I can tell you that the rule changes(the WHL adopted nearly all of the NHL changes) do have one drawback..............Common courtesy durring a Hockey game is to wait for a stoppage of play before leaving ones seat or returning to ones seat. Before this year that would mean a wait of 30 seconds to as long as maybe 3 minutes......now a wait of 5 minuets is not un-common
Aside from that I love the new changes :snap:

I would have thought it would lead to more penalty calls and more wide-open scoring, reducing the average time between stopages.

So far the 4 games that have been played by the Portland Winterhawks:
3-0
6-3
5-2
3-4
So, at least with us, it has not really resulted in much more scoring. There has been a little bit more penalty calling.....but the goalie can't freeze the puck anymore except when an opposing player is slamming away at it; defenders can't throw the puck into the stands under threat of 2 minutes; and most importantly of all---the blasted 2 line rule is gone so mid-ice stoppages are all but gone.

From what i understand the 2 line rule goes back to the days of skates that would fall apart on a fast break...lol. Before Bobby Hull, you have to remember even the slapshot was rarley seen, and before Bobby Orr the Defense ALWAYS played with one foot stuck next to the Blue line. So as the skill of players increased only cosmetic changes have been made, moving the goal line etc... A Smaller neutral zone, and the end of the 2 line pass also ensures the death of the "Neutral Zone Trap" a system I have ALWAYS HATED, making the game so slow, they should have used a baseball instead of a hockey puck. So New Jersey Fans, sorry, your glory days are OVER.

Yes, I hated the Devils for winning with that trap...........it worked so well that half the teams in the NHL started using it until they had turned one of the fastest and most exciting sports on the planet into greco-roman wrestling.

I'm withholding judgement on the new rules. I don't need more scoring, but I do want the goals to be "good", skilled. The two-line pass thing I don't mind. I'll kind of miss the goalies skating out to take the puck. Hockey season starts Wednesday, which is excellent! :) Happy me.

Exacly, the trap put a once great game to sleep.
And Alphabassettgrrl, In Hockey the speed of the game is one of it's greatest assets opposed to other sports. Regardless of scoring (Which will be improved) End to end rushes and breakaways will have fans jumping from their seats several times a night.
And this comes from me, an Ex-Defenseman who used to have nightmares and fits about break-aways...lol. It will be good.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT :snap: PUCK DROPS- ICE ROCKS :snap:

WOW...did you see some of those scores in the last 2 days?...5-6 goals!...yeeeeeha!
And you Southern Cali people, L.A. might be so-so, but it seems the Ducks quietly put together a VERY fast, and good team! Giggy might have problems now with the smaller pads though...
AND the Sharks will be AMAZING. California will have some GREAT Hockey this year! (Once again, Sorry L.A. Kings....not you....lol)

I learned something about this year tonight....anything can happen....I'm watching the Sharks- Blues and following the Bruins-Penguins games and both my teams are again getting thier collective azzes handed to them. Sharks down by 3, Bruins down by 2...
My Wife talks me into going out to dinner, we leave for dinner. Come home the Sharks scored 4 GOALS in the 3rd, and the Bruins 2 to tie and a third to WIN in OT. Both teams WIN!!!
Look at these scores! Bruins-7 Pens-6 (Crosby gets #1)... Sharks score 7, Blues 6....Atlanta SCORES 8!, 3 more end in shootouts!
WOW.... Dont leave the game or the T.V. early, you might miss it all.

And what do you think of this---
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Brett Hull trotted out a No. 9 jersey -- a number unused by the Winnipeg-Phoenix franchise since his father left the Jets during the 1979-80 season -- and the Coyotes made Bobby Hull the first member of their Glendale Arena Ring of Honor on Saturday night. GLENDALE, Ariz.
The festivities before a game against Minnesota drew rousing cheers from a standing-room-only crowd attending the Coyotes' home debut under coach Wayne Gretzky.
Gretzky stayed behind the bench, but Coyotes president Doug Moss and general manager Mike Barnett welcomed Bobby Hull, known as ``The Golden Jet,'' on a red carpet at center ice. Brett Hull, who wore No. 16 his first two games with the franchise skated to the gathering, embraced his father, did a pirouette to show off No. 9 and then hugged Bobby again.
Bobby Hulls #9?....I know Brett is his son, but what will be next?...#99 for a little Gretzky? I don't like it. Unretiring a number makes retiring them less meaningful.
Oh...and Gretzky got his first win behind the bench, 2-1 tonight, congrats to him :snap:

I know, I know
I left a WHL(junior hockey league that mirrors NHL rules and which most NHL players come from) game early tonite because my team was down 4 - 2 with 8 minutes to go and I hate traffic........I missed my team scoring 3 goals in 3 minutes  / :(
Hearing your team win on the radio when you just left the game is about as bittersweet as you can get.

I don't really see how that is all that much different then the previous years, there were many high scoring games in the pre-rule change seasons.....
and as far as not leaving the game or TV, that has always been true in hockey, as far as I'm concerned.... Things have always happened in a matter of seconds in hockey, things have always changed very quickly....
Thas why I love the game.

True enough. I guess the best way to tell the difference would be to watch a tape of New Jersey and Detroit playing each other a couple of years ago and then go see the Sharks play Anaheim now..........
Back in 1998(when the trap was starting to take off in popularity) my local team won the Memorial Cup(North America Junior Hockey Supremecy). Driving back home from the game with my friends we got to talking about how this year, even though they won more games then ever before, was just about the most boring year. The players won using a system instead of a melding of talent....sure they all were quite talented because no system in the World is going to win you a championship of that caliber without it; but it was the system that really won it for them. We fondly recalled better and greater teams in their history and wondered aloud how they could never get out of the Division to play for the championship........the answer came to us all at once...Kamloops(rival city) was using the trap and we finally got by them by playing their game :(
These rules changes aren't going to change the fact that some teams will use systems..... it will just change the systems that they use, and force them to create new ones.....

Yes; but hopefully the systems will be more exciting to watch(like a cherry picking system perhaps) :)

I have yet to see a single team using the trap this year. IT IS DEAD. As you watch a game see how the Nuetral zone is used now for strictly transition, and teams glide through. Watch an old Jersy or Wild Game...they spent half the game in the Nuetral zone. Now if you aren't ready to head back fast, and set up Defense, it's Break-away time for the other guy!
Also on Goalie Equipt- Giggy is having a bit of trouble in Anaheim, but have you seen Luongo in florida? WOW...2 shutouts in 2 games. He is faster with the smaller Equipt.
