together
finally alone
a single breath a lifetime
an hour but a heartbeat
parted by the merciless blade of a second hand
suddenly separate
forever as one

dogfood
the dog is looking up at me
to see what it is that he can see
"maybe he'll drop a little bite
hes such a clutz, you know he might"
"maybe if I tilt my head
he'll toss me down a crust of bread
I know hes having steak up there
I can smell it floating on the air"
get your nose away from me
I'm eating dinner....cant you see?
dont look at me with those puppy eyes
I'm hip to that, I'm far too wise
and get your paws down off my lap
Im too darn smart for all that crap!
besides you already had your chow
you had your turn, its my turn now.
"he'll weaken soon. hes getting full
he aint so tough, what a load of bull
so if I sit here being cool
he'll pony up...oh! did I drool?"
"he's sitting back, its almost time!
oh feast of humans, you'll soon be mine!
hes looking over, time to lay it on thick
a wagging tail might just do the trick"
fine, ya' beggin' mangy mutt
quit being such a pain in the butt
I saved this morsel just for you
youre a pretty good dog, I love you too.

Okay, my mooch of a dog Mellie is sitting right next to me, gazing imploringly at me with those sad brown eyes......
And I am totally not falling for it!
(sigh) Brb.
(Sound of pantry door opening).
I am such a pushover.

good morning, my ass!
the radio blares into my half awake brain
it cares not for dreaming and feels not my pain
the sun is still sleeping, so why then can't I?
its yet to come out and chase night from the sky
your duty is calling, they want you there NOW!
my head is still throbbing like a nail in my brow
drag myself out and kick myself up
stumble to shower, pour a hot cup
scubbed and scraped hairless, deodorant too
"why do I bother? like they'll ever smell you?"
out to my car, cup still in my hand
and start out across this dark, desolate land
arrive at my station still bleary and bleak
sit down in my chair and struggle to speak
“what is it you want? What is it you need?
You’d better talk fast lest I leave you to bleed!”
“we just needed your key, no reason to fret.
We were just wondering why you weren’t here yet”
I hand them my key and slump back in my chair
Trying to stay calm and breathe in the cool air.
The sun is now cresting up over the hill
The pain in my head is beginning to still
So this was my morning. Good morning to you.
Hope your morning was better, hope mine is soon too.

the fragrance of you swirls in my head
caressing my mind and memory
as close as my heart
yet far from my grasp as the stars in the suffocating night
no repent. no regret
I await the light to bring you into my sight
and set me free within myself once again

longshot
I pulll you close, closer to me
my hand slides across you slowly to places known to me well
your curves fit me as if made from my own
breathe in breathe out
slowly with nary a sound, I feel your warmth come to my cheek and rest
a measured breeze flows past us as we await the moment we've come here for
breathe in breathe out
my fingers tingle with anticipation as the moment draws near
with the stillness of a stone yet we move together nearly imperceptible to the eye
breathe in breathe out
my eyes search deeply to and through you to find what we both seek to find
so very far as to be nearly invisible but within our grasp
breathe in breathe out
the time has come
breathe in
my hands set in motion what cannot now be halted
a clap of thunder and blinding flash leap forth setting the very earth to shake beneathe us
and as quickly as it begins, its moment is now behind us leaving but a memory

a song in my head
the wind in my hair
I take in the sun
and breathe in the air
look over beside me
and see your sweet face
step on the gas
and feel my heart race
is it the speed or the smile
that makes my heart pound?
except for your voice
I cant hear a sound
I feel you move closer
and then closer still
how can something so simple
give one such a thrill?
so long as youre here
so long as youre there
my life will be better
so long as you care.

a treasure found at break of day
I knew the path, I knew the way
with flecks of gold, the green of jade
the stuff of which mans dreams are made.
it was not mine to keep or hold
these jade green stones with flash of gold
I held them tight with all I could
caring not for right or good.
greed and want overtakes my mind
to all else made both deaf and blind
to take it all and sail away
this treasure that was mine this day.
I left it where Id found it though
returned it to its place, just so
another day, another time
when I can justly make it mine.
treasure, know I wait for thee
the day that its just you and me
away we'll sail and not look back
through days of fire and nights of black
treasure you'll be mine one day
I'll find the path, I'll find the way
and the wealth that is both jade and gold
will be forever mine to hold.

the days march onward
one by one they fall by the wayside landing silently like the autumn leaves in the field
nearly unnoticed amongst its long lost brethren
now empty of life and reflecting only the shadows of what beauty they once held
awaiting the winds of time to cast them into distant memory
---
where is the reason?
where is the rhyme?
where do the days go?
where goes the time?
why should we care so?
why don't we know?
why do the years fly
and nights pass so slow?
who knows the answers?
why wont they say?
so many questions
but no answers today
I'll look not behind me
for nothing is there
I see not the future
and really dont dare
today is the one thing
I have and I hold
from the days of my youth
and as I grow old
so without all the answers
and with questions galore
I'll take each day graciously
and come back for more.

 My Day:mad:
enraged!
engaged!
unnerved!
undeserved!
gotta focus
hokus pokus!
listen!
dont talk!
walk the walk
or be outlined in chalk!
let those who know
put on the show!
just walk away
and stop burning my day!
I knew I was right
and headed to light.
if you dont leave me be
in much pain you'll be!
so now its all done
and I know Im the one
so now you can go.
by the way...
told you so.

truth
be careful what you ask for
it just might be yours
truth is a thing you should be respectful of
for it can have very sharp edges and should be handled with great care
both giving and receiving
a dose of reality like roundhouse kick to the skull
it can leave you dazed and wondering what just happened
it can light the fires of understanding and care
and bring two people closer with its unyeilding power,
or tear the still beating heart from your chest for all to see
sometimes both
the truth does not pretend. it does however stand still long enough to get a good look at it and everything it can reveal. hearing truth and understanding what was meant dont always happen at the same time. reflection, rethought, recall and review can show many facets that werent aparrent when the initial impact is felt and a mind slams shut in reflex.
what feels at first to be a slap in the face can turn to a gentle caress and a plea for understanding and patience.
what feels at first to be the deepest of cuts can be a cut that reveals something hidden that needs to be shown the light of day before it festers and ruins all it touches.
it can renew and revive
it can mame and destroy
it can make a blind man see
a deaf man hear
a child smile
or a grown man cry
so, use it wisely. sadly, its often easier said than done.
anyway, enough of that.
(ok so, a poem its not. I have my reasons for needing to get this all out.
feel free to ignore it.)

no time like the present
isnt that what they say?
no time like the present
dont waste another day
no time like the present
so now is the time
no time like the present
to wait is a crime
no time like the present
to tell you what I feel
no time like the present
now's all that is real
no time like the present
the days pass so fast
no time like the present
goodbye to the past
no time like the present
whats left to say?
no time like the present
lest it slip away
no time like the present
my heart's in your hand
no time like the present
to know where I stand
theres always tomorrow
I hear that said too
theres always tomorrow
I wish that was true
theres always tomorrow
I'll wait here and see
'cuz maybe tomorrow
is when you'll be with me

in silent stealth we crept along
a path that others thought was wrong
to reach the place to which we aspire
walking the balance of high wire
with no net to catch us if we should fall
to risk it now is to risk it all
eyes wide open, a deep breath taken
the very foundations of our world is shaken
hand in hand, along the path
to face the ire, to dare the wrath
the dragons breath and claws of steel
cannot sway us from what we feel
a hold so tight on each others heart
it cannot be seen, the end or start
to unknown horizons where the path may lead
to save our love, our souls be freed
from chains that hold us tight and fast
to the land where we are free at last

an impromptu xmas poem
ever wonder why it is
we hurt ourselves so bad?
ever wonder why it is
we make ourselves so sad?
we talk ourselves into our pain
we find ways to be down
when state of mind and attitude
are oft the things that make us frown
good thoughts good cheer
a smile or grin
are easy things to do
it can make the difference in our lives
and other peoples too
so for a change I'll give a smile
and hold my good thoughts near
and be thankful for the things that make
this special time of year
the holidays are what we make them
so go out, have some fun
celebrate, its not too late
to enjoy a day in the sun
go shop or gift or decorate
its really up to you
a merry xmas to you all
and an happy new year too

if the world could be turned
back upon itself
if time could be placed
back up on the shelf
would I go back and change
all the things that Ive done?
to have just one more day
for us in the sun
to hold your young hand
just one final time
and remind us again
of how once you were mine
would it change what is now?
could it change all the wrong?
if we both could go back
and sing just one more song
would it lead here again?
and bring back all the pain
or could we go right
instead of left again
if I had the power
you know I would try
to make it all better
to make the days fly
but that powers not in me
though I wish it were true
so I'll just say I love you
and hope you still love me too

hand in hand to the very edge of eternity we’ve journeyed
at long last, standing together, staring into the singular sunset
the choices are clear
the answers are not
to hold you here with me
together mired in all the pain and sorrow we’ve carried for so very long
or allow you to fly into the endless night alone
free at last from the ties that bind
to hope against hope to once again walk with you in the sunlight
still carrying with us the weight of this burden as we continue on this endless winding road
or loose the load from your wings and let you fly away
condemning myself for eternity for surrendering you to the dark
Shakespeare’s words thunder in my heart and mind
to be
or not to be
I wish the answers were as plain

and so it has come at last
unavoidable undeniable unbelieveable
a familiar scent floating in an empty room
is what remains of all I once knew
an alien landscape surrounds me now
resplendent with with unopened doors and roads not taken
seen now appearing through the waning angelic mist
of a world that now fades like the waking from a dream
and so the journey begins

the dust in my mouth
has a bittersweet taste
face down in it
since the last moment I saw sunlight
we'd become old friends
the dust and I
but the time has come
for us to part company
a sucker punch I saw coming a mile away
lay me here seems nearly a hundred days past
bruised and bloodied, unconscious and unbelieving
it was a damn good fight
tooth and nail, toe to toe
eye to eye and heart to heart
we fought with all we had
to no avail
lost was the battle and thusly the war
waged by our own doing but not by our wish
there are no winners
only survivors
left now to pick themselves up
brush the sacred dust from their hands
look hard into the sun rising on a new day
and see what new fights lay in our path
bring it

a lack of inspiration
the effervescent verse will not come this day
struggle as I might to find cause to bring them forth
wit and wisdom, mirth and tempo
lost now in the tempest of my mind and heart
no visions of a coming day call
no thought of the timeless sea ring
no meanings suffer unknown
no thought yearning to be free from the confines of my mind
shall find their way through me to these pages
perhaps again one day

the end of the world, year 1
in the blink of an eye you flew to places I cannot follow
to the eternal realms where I am not yet welcome
I will bide my time here amongst those left behind
awaiting my turn
no longer fearing that which remains unknown to me
but now eternally blessed by your presence there
I miss you my dearest
I know now and accept that I always will
a thousand lifetimes shall pass
with your memory and love entwined in my very being
I am what I am because of our life together
a debt I can never repay
all Ive known and ever will know
all Ive seen and ever will see
all Ive lived and survived
I owe to you
thank you for gracing my life

geez I so very much hate valentines
the hearts and the cards, the "will you be mine?"s
such a fraud, a con, a vile pretense
its just never seemed, to me, to make sense
to spend just a day, a dollar, a thought
to profess your love with things that you bought?
to give of ones self is all that is needed
so to all who will hear, these words should be heeded
show your love with each day, not just one...but for all!
be it in winter or spring, the summer or fall
your happiness will grow throughout the year
if each and every day you hold loved ones near
so forget all the cards, the flowers, the hype
and pay close attention to these words that I type
love is too fleeting to last just the one day
love is more what you do and less what you say
dont take things for granted all the days in a year
and expect February 14th to make love reappear
so go hug somebody you love and be sure to say so
and do so each day and watch the love flow
your heart and your wallet will thank you in kind
and may the love that comes daily be all yours to find

what an odd thing it is
suddenly living alone
not something Im versed in
but its virtues have grown
I admit I did fear it
seems not long ago
but I conquered the empty
then re-learned how to grow
your thoughts undisturbed
your ears hear no voice
you can run around naked
its really your choice
while of course I would trade it
back to what once was here
I cant say 'I hate it!'
'cuz theres nothing to fear

"Through The Dark"
as I walk away
I look over my shoulder
to see what I'm leaving behind
pieces of puzzles
and wishes on eyelashes fail
oh how do I show all the love
inside my heart
for this is all new
and I'm feeling my way through the dark
and I used to talk
with honest conviction
of how I predicted my world
I'm gonna leave it to star gazers
tell me what your telescope says
oh what is in store for me now?
it's coming apart
I know that it's true
'cause I'm feeling my way through the dark
try to find a light on somewhere
try to find a light on
somewhere
I'm finding I'm falling in love with the dark over here
oh oh what do I know
I don't care
where I start
for my troubles are few
as I'm feeling my way through the dark
through the dark
I'm feeling my way through the dark

Just me
Since I last saw your face, two years have now passed
Seems I’ve learned to grieve and move on at long last
What once was so close seems a lifetime ago
And how I begged you to stay, but the powers say no
So off on your way to greater things than I see
What was once you and I has become now, just me.
-----
Forgiving ones self is a hard thing to do
Yet is a path that must be followed now
In the box
Or in the sun
The choices set before me as clear as a springtime sky
Life beckons me on to join in its revelry
I trudge forward into its waiting arms
And in its gentle caress, learn to walk again
Sorrow gives way to memory
Death makes way for new life
This is how things are meant to be
To accept this, a bitter pill
To deny it embraces the horror in an unending torment
To languish in the darkness holding fast to what once was
Or to see clouds flying and realize that all is, indeed, not lost
I choose life and pray it still chooses me

(Be Not Defeated by the Wind)
Be not defeated by the rain, Nor let the wind prove your better.
Succumb not to the snows of winter. Nor be bested by the heat of summer.
Be strong in body. Unfettered by desire. Not enticed to anger. Cultivate a quiet joy.
Count yourself last in everything. Put others before you.
Watch well and listen closely. Hold the learned lessons dear.
A thatch-roof house, in a meadow, nestled in a pine grove's shade.
A handful of rice, some miso, and a few vegetables to suffice for the day.
If, to the East, a child lies sick: Go forth and nurse him to health.
If, to the West, an old lady stands exhausted: Go forth, and relieve her of burden.
If, to the South, a man lies dying: Go forth with words of courage to dispel his fear.
If, to the North, an argument or fight ensues:
Go forth and beg them stop such a waste of effort and of spirit.
In times of drought, shed tears of sympathy.
In summers cold, walk in concern and empathy.
Stand aloof of the unknowing masses:
Better dismissed as useless than flattered as a "Great Man".
This is my goal, the person I strive to become.

I lost you to the ages
I miss you and envy heaven

so much has changed
since last I held you, dying in my arms
I am not who I once was with you
yet still not who I wish to be, without
love never fades
from the heart and from the mind
thank the heavens and the maker
that pain does

the fire and desire that burns me to the core
soothes not the aching within, the aching without
yet the sun still shines
the earth still turns
the rain and wind still pass uncaring across the sky above me
why should they care?
the order of things is life and eventual death
at the hands of some unforseen force creeping just out of our grasp and vision
that will not be quelled by wishes and hopes
by prayers and all the pleading of a billion weeping eyes
life is on loan, payment due upon the demand of a universe whose order and tempo is beyond our comprehension and control
we are separated from it as a singular entity
but undeniably part of the whole, regardless of our desire to stand out amongst the uncountable minutiae that surrounds us
so is the natural order of things
try as we might to change or avert its will
the delusion of immortality as a desire as futile a battle as has ever been waged
would you stay if it were granted? and see all you know and knew turn to dust before you
I think not
the endless pitiful sorrows of a world gone insane would drown you as sure as the unending tide pounds mountains into sand and washes them from their million year rest
as sure as there is a beginning, each story has an end
in the pages in between, the moments that count the most
with its joys and sorrows, triumphs and failures
with its endless banality and epic sweeping drama
we are each our own author
unpublished and unknown
as it should be
