wow........thats...kind of amazing really.
while I'm the last to call myself a 'world traveler' by any stretch, picturing that being a norm in a culture of that size is hard to do thru 'american eyes'. add to that, picturing any DL being trashed by the masses is just so contrary to what Ive seen its truly hard to imagine.
I did find one line in that a bit odd really. Not being versed in mainland chinese culture I thought this line was particularly interesting:
"China, especially the mainland, has a tendency to regard all actions in terms of whether they will bring a profit or loss."
isnt that terribly capitalistic in what is supposedly the largest communist country in the world?

very interesting article.

It was interesting. I believe this is taken from an unbiased source. A Japanese paper? And relations between the two countries are, well...they may not be the best people to talk about mainland Chinese people. Still, spitting a pissing at Disneyland. Gross.

Sounds delicious!
(On a side note: as I was reading the article, the suite from Mulan came up on my iPod playing in the next room. Don'cha just love synchronicity?)

Oh, I was being sarcastic. It was a *very* biased article. Though, biased or not, spitting in public is almost never acceptable in my book. Gyah.

Well, the article was harsh, but the reports are out there regarding the, uhmm, cultural differences between the Chinese mainland guests and what we would call the 'Disney code of behavior', and they seem to support this story. I have to say, I know quite a few persons from Taiwan and China, and I've never seen that sort of behavior exhibited. Of course, I've never had to stand in line with them before.....

There are plenty of awful stories about behavior at our park. Just ask around. I've seen naked children, dirty diapers, etc. I'm sure there's some exaggeration in the article, but who knows how much? I'll bet it's probably half as bad as they're portraying.

To be fair, I wasn't horrified by the sight of a kid peeing in the begonias, but there is a bit of noise out there regarding these issues, so it's not just the Japanese.

Mainland Chinese tourists visiting Hong Kong Disneyland on its debut day smoked in nonsmoking areas went barefoot and even let children urinate in public, local newspapers reported.
I've read versions of this sentence at least 7 different times from 7 different news sources from 7 different countries. Something got out on the AP and took off like a dead man wearing red long johns.
While I am sure there are some pretty major cultural differences being exhibited at HKDL, I doubt that it is CONSTANTLY as bad of a problem that this report (and all of the clones) claim.

We used to make a point of visiting that particular fountain because it seemed that it was the only one in the park where the water was ice-cold.
I think I'll just buy the water from now on.

I've witnessed the random napping phenomenon. We do business with Chinese customers who come to our facility for meetings. In between sessions, they can often be seen napping in various chairs outside of the conference rooms. zzzzzzz

50 years of Communism or not, nothing is going to get rid of the ingrained Chinese profit motive. They are the model for the Ferengi on Star Trek.
I'm not sure, however, that bad manners = profits, though rule-breaking might. Not flushing after using the restroom facilities does not constitute breaking a rule, and cannot possibly lead to a profit for the filthy, disgusting Chinaman who has no honor.
In any event, do we even need another reason not to visit a Disneyland with 4 attractions?

Fearing a "this is racist" outcry, I put it here. If you think it belongs elsewhere, that's cool with me. I was being cautious.
Were the Ferengi really modeled after the Chinese? LOL. I...have a...weird thing for...Quark. Quark *and* Odo. Hmmm, maybe Quark and Odo together...heh. No, not that. But they were a funny odd couple. I wish I saw more DS9. Alas, I cannot afford the DVDs.

If I remember right, a series of economic reforms took place in China in 1974. They've been so successful that now we're worried about China surpassing the United States in power. In my opinion, they already have surpassed us in many ways, but we're not willing to admit it (though such behavior at a Disney park may cancel out progress.... ugh! )

When i was in Shanghai and Hangzhou, i did see kids pee a lot in the street and even at the temples I visited. they even make crotch less pants specifically for it that you can buy in stores. They look ridiculous but hey, easy access. Also they are notorious for cutting in line. Its the norm. Happened to me twice. But don’t be fooled, there not tough about it at all. If you make the slightest stink about, they'll back off ASAP. Just leave as little space as possible between you and the person in front of you and you’ll be fine. China may be growing in economic power but there still trying to get beyond the Cultural Revolution people wise. And don’t get me started on dysentery. Lets just say im already worried about our Athletes when they compete in 2008 Beijing.

My best experience was in 1998, I was working at Epcot at the Land. As I came around the corner by the 9 pound lemons (where the Huge Pumphins are now) I just started to talk about the "sterilized sand" and noticed a little boy in the back row standing and peeing off the side of the boat into the "sterilized sand"!!! He was probably 2-3 and his mother was holding him. In 2001 I saw just about the same thing off the side of the Backlot Tour. The worst was one day while walking through the Studios heading to lunch, I saw a parent holding a child over a planter as she pooped! Interestingly enough, he was less than 20 feet from a restroom and was well aware of it. "She couldn't wait!" was his reply. I couldn't eat lunch that day!
Needless to say, it's not just a Chinese thing... It's super rare here though. I've only noticed a few cases in almost eight years, but it does happen.
