Love that movie. I thought all the awards they won were right on the money. I did like Heath's Ennis until I saw Phillip's Capote. Wow. The Best Actor nod went to the right queen character...

Rumor has it that Heath mouthed the words 'What the f**k' after the Best Actor winner was announced and it wasn't him. I read it in a Boston paper this morning. I taped the show last night, I'll have to rewind that moment.

Ang Lee is soooo cool. Love him.

Jim Shamus, who accepted the award for Best Picture Drama, was at the Harvard showing I was at. He's a really cool guy and very frickin smart for releasing this movie slllloooowly.

Anyone else bugged by Ryan Phillipe? Love his wife, he's cute but really annoying with his spotlight stealing antics...

I loved Geena Davis' acceptance speech. Hysterical. George made me laugh, too.

And I just love, love my Brit actors: Emma, Colin, Hugh L and Anthony Hopkins. (Had no idea it was pronounced 'Antony'...) :)

Need to see 'Walk the Line'.
Need to see the gay cowboy movie again...

Must see 'Walk the Line'

I've seen Brokeback five times now, and it deserves all the awards it got.

Must see 'Capote', cause it's widely reputed that P.S. Hoffman deserved to beat out Heath Ledger (who most certainly did not mouth "wtf"). Interestingly, both Best Actor winners (Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman) played real-life characters (as did other nominee David Straithern). Frankly, I give Ledger a bit more points for playing a fictional character ... as there is just too much imitation involved in playing a real person for me to give it full acting props.

Finally saw Brokeback Mountain and while it is very much a damn fine movie (despite the always annoying presence of Jake Gyllenhall) for me it wasn't the best in any particular category except maybe screenplay.

However, it was more than good enough that I am not bothered by it winning anyway (unlike other recent movies that took lots of awards).

Well, I'm not particularly familiar with Truman Capote (I've seen still pictures but before the movie I don't think I'd ever seen film of him) so watching Capote didn't feel so much like mimicry since I had no familiarity with what he was mimicing.

Generally I'm of the same feeling as iSm about this and discount to some degree acting in biopics. For me, though, Hoffman's performance in Capote blows through any discounting that I might otherwise give (whereas Phoenix and Witherspoon get the full discount from me for Walk the Line despite enjoying the movie.

And Jake isn't hot, he's just dopey looking. For some reason he has one of those faces I think I'd enjoy punching. And it is a small complaint about the movie but I never bought that he'd aged a day over the course of it.

Too bad the discussion of the movie has died since now that I've seen it I'd really like to bring up the question of whether Ennis is gay. Jack certainly is, but Ennis is more like how I see myself falling for a man (I've no general interest in men romantically but have no doubt that I could fall in love with an individual man). Unlike Jack, Ennis never shows any interest in any other man and had a solid romantic relationship with a woman before meeting Jack.

Ennis is completely gay, trying to be bi and not succeeding. Jake is fully bisexual, and is uber freaking HAWT.

Capote was bloody gay. Joaquin and Reese may get demerits for mimicry, but offset by extra credit for doing their own singing (quite the rarity). On the TV side, is it just coincidence that John Rhys won for mimicing Elvis? Elvis wasn't gay, he just dressed that way.

And speaking of dresses, Rachel Weisz had the mmmmm finest gown, imo.

I haven't read the short story, but is there any indication in either the movie or story that Ennis ever had a romantic or sexual inclination towards men other than Jack?

I don't see why Ennis would be a failed bisexual while Jack is not since there is no indication that Jack was ever attracted to a woman, perhaps even his wife, and it took the woman being the aggressor to get even that.

I do like that for the most part you could change all the genders of the people involved and it is still a compelling story (though you might have to have a different reason for forbidden love). It isn't so much a gay love story as a love story with gay people. It doesn't highlight a uniqueness in homosexuality but a universality in love.

And Gyllenhall isn't hot, unless bovine eyes are attractive. I think I'm a better judge of male hotness than any gay people (and I say this tongue firmly in cheek).

Along with Rachel, I thought Geena Davis and Scarlett Johanson looked fabulous. Emma Thompson looked beyond fabulous. Reese may have been in vintage Chanel, but I did not like it, don't think it did anything for her.

What I really loved, and did not get home from the movies early enough to see it all, was Issac Mizrahi commentating on the gowns. He was a delightful change of pace from Kathy Griffin and Joan Rivers and her daughter. Don't miss them, keep Issac!

Anyone record the E! red carpet thing? I'd love to see the whole thing.

^ agree on all the gown comments of Snowflake ... with the added that Kiera Knightly's classic and simply white choice was elegant, and I loved it (but, then again, I'd drool over her in a burlap sack).

Requirements of being Gay: Alex, one does not have to go after a myriad of boy partners to qualify as gay. Tecnically speaking, Ennis is bisexual, as he had both a wife and, later, a girlfriend with whom he had sex. What the movie barely hinted at, but the story craftily revealed, is that Ennis's preferred style of sexual intercourse might best be relayed through the classic Newleywed Game interchange:

Bob Eubanks: Wives, what is the strangest place your husband likes to make whoopee?

Wife No. 1: Um, that'd be in the butt, Bob.

Ennis is clearly trying to make it work with girls, but fails miserably. He likes to simulate gay-style sex even with his wife (though, of course, buttsex is not strictly homo), and the script implies that his tryst with Jack on Brokeback Mountain is his first sexual experience.

And though he has indeed fathered two children, the script also implies that sex between he and his wife dried up after that. The script flatout says outright that Jack is having sex quite regularly with his wife ... and though he was not the aggressor, he seemed to enjoy Lureen's advances and his initial tuck and roll in the backseat with her.

So, my analysis remains:
Ennis - 95% gay, 5% bi
Jack - 72% gay, 28% bi

Ennis - kinda hot despite the mumbling
Jack - ultra hot in large part because of the cow eyes

I saw the movie this weekend. It's a beautiful piece and very well done, but I didn't like it as much as I expected to. I'm not down with cheating on spouses. I don't care what your leanings are, a commitment is a commitment. Call me a stick in the mud.

A friend sent me the short story today. Maybe after reading that my opinion will change. We'll see.

My favorite dress of the night - the one I would wear in an instant - was worn by Karen from Will and Grace. It was sort of a shiney Morticia and I lamented the fact that the state of my post-op boobage would not allow me to wear that.....in public ast least. Man, how I crave that dress!

The things I loved were:

Geena's Hair
Johnny and Vanessa - swankiest couple ever!
Gwynth in her pregger glory and the fact they fixed the braw strap mid presentation
Some girl I don't know but recognize who was VERY preggers wearing black with GREAT 40's inspired hair

I hated:

Pamela Anderson - for many reasons. Bad dress, look at me antics, on and on. YUCK!
Natalie Portman's haircut. Great idea dear, but your head's too big.
Who the heck is "Fergie" and she's not the Duchess of Wales, and why was she there?

Geena Davis? Love love love her and her fabulous hair. Tempted, or should I say inspired, to go red again, myself...:snap: And does anyone have better comedic timing? Oy, she's a Goddess.

I really liked Drew Barrymore's gown, but sheesh! Foundation, girl: wear. a. bra. I mean, this ain't National Geographic.

Aaaaalll the men looked hawt. It was a drool-fest over here at casa wrightson. He loved Johnny, She loved Geena. Looks like they can stay together in bliss! :evil:

Only sad bit was my home-girl Patricia not winning...:( And she looked gorgeous, too!

Given the choices, I was pleased that Brokeback won. I still maintain that I think Capote was the better-made film, but it wasn't even nominated. I'm just glad that Crash didn't make the list (and hope it doesn't make the AMPAS nominee list either.) Which reminds me-- what does everybody think of Crash? I've been meaning to ask.

And my dark horse for the year (Amy Adams in Junebug) wasn't nominated for this-- but her buzz keeps growing, and I have hope.

Was thoroughly satisfied with all acting awards. I saw all of the performances and thought that those were really the strongest of each category (nominated, that is.) Am especially fond of Hoffman's performance. Masterpiece.

Oh, and nobody has yet noted that, among the LGBT characters portrayed by nominated actors, the winner for best actress in a drama portrayed a pre-op transsexual-- great performance there, too. There was another T character in the male category too.

And Ennis is totally gay.

I really like the look of Johansson from the neck down and enjoy her in movies but in real life she always looks so vacant that it is too distracting for me.

I didn't watch the show or read much coverage so I'll comment on the pictures from €uroMeinke:

Ziyi Zhang: nice

Scarlett Johansson: a little too Pamela Anderson (and I did see Pamela's dress and it was ugly but actually almost hid her boobs) but still pretty good.

Debi Mazar: for a maternity dress very nice. Not sexy though; I've never been turned on by visible evidence that a person has been having sex with someone not me.

Rachel Weisz: don't really care for it, but then I'm never a big fan of bows.

Geena Davis: looks great, perhaps they should have different color carpet sso that people can walk down the one that best goes with their clothing. This could add to the stupidity of the red carpet shows by them having to gamble on staking out a good carpet color.

Kiera Knightly: I'm too much of a boob man to be intrigued by her. Though she looks as good as a teenage boy in a dress can.

Johnny Depp: Take a shower. You don't need be that much like a pirate.

Vanessa Paradise: Eat a cracker or something.

I'm just going through the link that € had and I remembered who I found scariest (next to Fergie - or maybe more than). Harry is nice looking. She looks like an overbaked, over-highlighted, undercovered monster. Please, someone tell me if I ever go outside looking that fake!

Ah, well, the fashions and looks are always good fodder for beratement, and admiration. But boy have the Globes gone snoozing downhilll since they came to Network TV. No more drunken shenanigans. Bah. The closest thing was Harrison Ford presenting with a drink in hand.

Not enough.

Forget all the fashion faux-pas. The show was booooring.

(For the recognition of quality film art, however, I find the Globes lightyears ahead of the Oscars ... and this year was no exception.)

K, cause I loved "Crash" and could talk a bluestreak about it. Matt Dillon was robbed of his Golden Globe. Clooney only got it cause they were not going to give him Best Director in a million years, so supporting actor was a consolation prize. I call shenanigans!

Of course, they could have just chopped the middle part with McAdams and Gosling and presented a 30-minute short with Garner and Rowlands and I'd have been happy.

A friend of mine had the misfortune of being on a plane that showed The Notebook. Quite possibly the most crying ever done on an airplane. The infants were thinking "oh god, just shut up you people."

Here's an interesting tidbit:
'Brokeback' made $735,000 yesterday. It was number one for the day. That's the first time it topped all others for a day. It is only in 683 theatres! 'Glory Road' is in 2,222 theatres and only made $693,713. Shamus is a very, very smart man. The Globes gave them a boost...

As of this post, 'BBM' has grossed $32 mil. It only cost them $14 mil to make it. It's in profit land! It also made $1.9 mil overseas. This means the studios are going to think 'gay=profit'. (They won't get it that it's the story that does it...) Get ready for a gay cop movie, a gay fireman movie, gay indian chief movie...

Does Christ Matthews (someone I respect as an intelligent political observer if not maker of good political television) really think Michael Savage is "wonderful"?

I will sit through political talk radio from almost anywhere on the (political and electromagnetic) spectrum but Savage is so repulsive that he is one of two people that will reflexively get me to change stations (the other being Al Franken, but simply because his voice induces in me severe narcolepsy).
