Well, it's happening again and the official line-up is out (though there may be a few additions when the posters go up) So far here's the lineup:

Saturday, April 29th
Depeche Mode, Franz Ferdinand, Sigur Ros, Common, Damian Marley, Atmosphere, Carl Cox, My Morning Jacket, Ladytron , Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Tosca, Cat Power, Animal Collective, HARD-fi, Derrick Carter, Devendra Banhart, She Wants Revenge, The Walkmen, The Juan Maclean, Audio Bullys, Imogen Heap, Lady Sovereign, Deerhoof, The Duke Spirit, Editors, stellastarr*, Lyrics Born, Matt Costa, The New Amsterdams, The Zutons, Platinum Piped Pipers, White Rose Movement, Chris Liberator, Colette, Joey Beltram, Hybrid, Wolfmother, The Like, Living Things, Nine Black Alps, The Section Quartet, Infadels, Youth Group, Shy FX & T Power, Infusion.

Sunday, April 30th
Tool, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bloc Party, Paul Oakenfold, Scissor Sisters, Matisyahu, James Blunt, TV on the Radio, Sleater-Kinney , Mogwai, Coheed and Cambria, Gnarls Barkley, Coldcut, Phoenix, Digable Planets, Amadou & Mariam, Little Louie Vega, Mylo (DJ Set), Seu Jorge, Wolf Parade, The Go! Ooh, Matisyahu. That'll be a short set since, based on radio play, he only has one song  (snarkiness aside, I do really want to see him and hear some other stuff).

Paul Oakenfold=huge yawn. He's the Blink-182 of electroinc music, I'll be avoiding that.

I recognize a lot of names from this year's KCRW CD packs (Seu Jorge, Jazzanova, Imogen Heap, Damian Marley). I know I listened to a bunch of those in picking my 5, but I'll have to go back and see which I want to see. Seu Jorge, by the way, is the artist who did the Portuguese song in Life Aquatic.

Other names that pop out are Franz Ferdinand, of course, Depeche Mode (but I won't miss someone else cool for that), Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Scissor Sisters (I think Jen will find somewhere else to be for that one).

Time to start browing iTunes again.

Well, I'm more excited about our hotel (http://www.dhsbeathotel.com/)than I am the line up at the moment.

There are things I'm interested in and stuff I'd like to see, but nothing that makes me say "I HAVE to be there". Depeche Mode is a GIANT yawn for me (always has been) and, while I will love the Scissor Sisters, Matt Costa, Bloc Party, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Seu Jorge There's nothing that says to me "Don't Miss It". But, I have to trust the promoters in a ways. They always seem to turn me on to new music that I, in turn, love.....we'll see.

I could do with another oldie cool act (Roxy Music anyone). Here's hoping.

Ghoulish Delight

Yeah, for me last year it was only partially about the bands I already knew and liked. It was about the ones I didn't know that turned out to be awesome.

€uroMeinke
01-31-2006, 01:19 PM
Yeah Roxy Music and the Buzzcocks were circulated in the rumour, either one would push me to be a bit more excited.

But, it's usually the "other" bands that stand out in Coachella - I liked Arcade Fire's CD allright, but after seeing them live, I became a fan.

Yes, April 30th is the target date, though things aren't 100% until we officially announce it. But I would say it is 80%.

It is in April because many of the primary people in putting together the game (including me) will be in Japan in the middle of March.

Anaheim schools are out April 17-21, as are half of the surrounding school districts. April 23 attendance is expected to be very high.

Also, we would have difficulty staffing the event fully on the 23rd. April 23 is our second choice date but we'll only go to it if something makes April 30 an impossibility.

Well, this blows. How the hell can we choose? We haven't missed an MA since we started attending in 2001. Last year, Coachella was a defining event - we almost never buy music, and after the event we bought albums upon albums, some of which is now among my favorite music. Missing either of these would be awful, and there's no way we're doing both.

:(

skip coachella, do the MA.. and go to a cool festival in Europe. There are a jillion of them, and it's the swanky, globe-hopping, jet-setting thing to do.

BarTopDancer

I have Coachella, MA and a birthday party that is being planned for me in Vegas that weekend. I need two clones.

I suspect I will be doing Coachella on Saturday and MA on Sunday and pushing Vegas back. That is assuming (yes, I know) that MA doesn't require 2 days.

02-01-2006, 03:20 PM
If Coachella's line-up was a tad more enticing, it would be a no brainer. As it is, there's nothing completely "sending" me. But, I've also done MA for years and feel like I can miss one - I've missed before. I'm NOT doing both. If MA's at DCA, that will factor in as well.

And, Jesse, I see nothing wrong with doing Coachella AND doing a European festival. Which one are you up for, eh?

Alex

I think what excites me about Madonna at Coachella is that, you KNOW she is going to do a unique set. It will be very different from the multi-media extravaganza she puts on during her tour. She may even be DJing rather than "performing". Who knows, but the surprise is half the fun here. Join us, Zap. We've had a great time several years in a row.

Isaac
03-02-2006, 02:56 PM
I would but since M.A. is on the same day and I want to see Madonna in concert the following month, I should probably pass on Coachella. I'll go next year.

Kevy Baby
03-04-2006, 11:04 AM
What would have been cool is if she just showed up as a surprise guest. The problem with announcing the appearance is that droves of Madonna fans are going to be showing up expecting to see her play a usual set and are going to foul up the vibe of the overall experience.

To me, she sticks out like a sore thumb in this group. (This is definitely not a commentary on Madonna - I enjoyed the one time I have seen her and would like to go again. I think it was a bad decision on the part of the Coachella organizers.)

Well, due to circumstances, we had to skip day 2, but we were at the first day. It was great. Wonderfully hot, but we were smart and didn't kill ourselves. The highlights for mere were The Zutons, The Juan Maclean, the little bit of Derrick Carter we caught, Franz Ferdinana, and ending the day with Daft Punk was spectacular.

Unfortunately, the organizers got stupid regarding taffic flow between last year and this. Last year, we were able to out of the parking lot with zero problem, 20 minutes at worst. This year? It took us over an hour to go, oh, the 100 yards to the exit. It was ridiculous. Don't know what they changed, but damn.

WOW!You know, I HATE big festivals. Hate Hate HATE them. But I LOVE Coachella. Yes, it was hot and, at times, pretty crowded, but the crowd is always so good and mellow (must be the weed) and the music so good that I can get over it. It is impossible to see every band and, sometimes, even see all the ones you want to see. But, for 2 days, we did our best without killing ourselves.

Highlights:

Daft Punk on Saturday Night in the Sahara Tent.
Almost a full hour of fantastic, danceable, interesting sounds and a wonderful multimedia spectacular. Watching DJs seems to be the most boring thing on earth, but I have been constantly amazed by many DJ performances over the years.

Franz Ferdinand - Coachella Stage - Saturday evening. \I was almost tired of this band but GD's sister said they put on a great show a few weeks ago so we saw them here. I have fallen in love with them all over again and I want to take every one of those cute Scottish boys home with me. Such great energy and FUN!!!

Massive Attack, Sunday night, Coachella Stage.
Sometimes timing makes things work even better. Sunday was hotter than Saturday and we were missing GD & CP so we weren't as into the day as we were on Saturday. But, the sun went down, the air cooled a bit and Massive Attack played a full hours of perfect low-key, bass heavy, grooving music and it was a spiritual experience. I spent most of the set laying on the ground literally feeling the music surge through my body. Perfect.

Gnarles Barkley, Sunday afternoon, Gobi tent.
The biggest problem was that the smallest venue was WAAAAY to small for this rocking, interesting, entertaining band. This is a band I want to see again.

Disappointments:

Madonna was lame - especially after seeing such a great show by Daft Punk in the same tent. The exodus after 2 songs was immense.

Tosca - I expected a LOT more from Dorfmeister of the GREAT Kruder and Dorfmeister. VERY disappointing.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Saturday afternoon, Mojave Tent. The was one of the most anticipated bands of the festival for me and, they had terrible sound and left after a few songs. I want to see them live, but it wasn't working that day in that place.

There were so many other bands we saw and I may do a list just for my own mnemonic purposes but that will be posted later, if ever. However, the REAL star of the weekend was The Beat Hotel, but that will get its own thread.

Reading about Brother Bears winning MA on another thread reminded me of this funny story.

We were trying to find GD & CP before Franz Ferdinand were wandering through the waiting crowd. We walked by a group of very Bearish men. One saw Chris and did a quick second take then shouted HELLO! We had to walk by them once again after we had located our friends and this time the whole group was attentive to my little "Bear Trap".

They had NO idea I was following and cracking up.
