The Pixar: 20 Years of Animation (http://www.moma.org/exhibitions/2005/pixar.html) exhibit at MoMA was a fantastic exhibit. I loved being able to get up close and see the detail in many of the pieces. The free audio tour that went with the exhibit was an added bonus. Many of the artists featured in the exhibit spoke about the influences and inspirations for characters. One of my favorite stories was from Ricky Nierva describing the creation of the character Roz from Monsters, Inc. Roz's hair was inspired by cotton candy, so they had a cotton candy machine in-house to create models for her hair. At the end, the artists had a big cotton candy party.

The color scripts were some of my favorite pieces. The poster for the exhibit shows some of the color scripts for The Incredibles.

Basically, a color script is like a story board, only it shows each scene's colors that in turn will set the tone of the scene. My other favorites were 4 charcoal drawings done for Finding Nemo. The extreme detail in the shark was so cool up close.

Two pieces done for the exhibit, the Artscape and the Toy Story zoetrope, had me standing there with my mouth open in wonder.

The Artscape was a digital film projected onto an entire wall, made by compositing the pieces from the exhibit together and animating them with ambient sounds added in. I sat through it twice, and the audience assembled to watch clapped both times as it finished. Really a fantastic experience.

The Zoetrope (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoetrope) was made up of Toy Story characters, including Army Men parachuting from the top and Wheezy jumping on seesaw. The illusion of movement is suspended at one point during the presentation by turning off the strobe effect, so that the viewer can see what's "behind the curtain."

The exhibit closes in NY on February 6, and moves to London's Space Museum next. Hopefully it will come somewhere near you. :)
