Okay, I know of at least one other LoT hip cat that might find this one interesting... ;)
Pop star Madonna will perform with "virtual" band Gorillaz at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles next week.
Organisers said the singer would appear with a 3D colour animation of the cartoon band in what organisers called an "exciting Grammy moment".

Sounds cool. :)
But will she sing 'Isaac'? :D

sounds like a perfect iPod commercial...
I wonder if all of the Grammy performances will be sold at iTunes the next morning.

The opening can be. After that, it's all downhill.
Madonna opened the show in 1999, after FINALLY being nominated (and she won 4 of them that night!)
Here she is performing 'Nothing Really Matters'.

She opened again in 2001, performing 'Music'.

Both Madonna and the Gorillaz performed live at the MTV Europe Awards this past November & are fans of each other. So I'm not too surprised this collaboration came up.
The Gorillaz 3D appearance will look very similar to their MTV appearance, where they performed 'Feel Good Inc.'

I love Madonna.
Sorry, LSPE. But we do very much agree on 'Harold and Maude'. Love, love, love that film.

Ahem, I saw her live in 1999 as she opened the Grammy's. I never cared for her before that, but she put on a great show.
It was most certainly not all downhill from there on that night, as Moby and U2 also gave great live performances, and host Jon Stewart was hysterical during the commercial breaks when the show was off the air.
I always found the Grammy's boring on TV ... but "live" it was like some awesome rock'n'roll variety show, with a terrific comedian host. Oh, and there were some award thingies given out between constant live musical numbers.

Maybe I just need to see her perform live to really get her. What is her name now, anyway? Ruth? Job? Something biblical...

Whatever one thinks of her music, her performances, her acting, her life, etc., Like a Prayer is still one of the best songs ever created.
I don't always get her new stuff, but I dig her Pop Queen Majesty.

One of the reasons behind these live Gorillaz appearances is to test out the effects & refine them so they can be used for their upcoming world tour in either 2007 or 2008, depending on the progress of their upcoming movie.

I missed Madonna, but saw U2. 5 for 5! :D
Too bad they didn't perform City of Blinding Lights. I can only guess that it was too long given that they had to perform the duet with Mary J. Blige. Contrary to many other U2 fans' opinions, I actually enjoy Blige's cover of One.
Springsteen's performance of Devils and Dust was also very good, and I loved the New Orleans jam at the end.

I turned it off. I saw Madonna's clucky corset and animated tightie whities, a bad speech full of awful puns for a David Bowie award, Coldplay and U2 - then I realized I knew nothing about what the Grammy's call "music" and didn't really want to, so I turned it off.

Oh, and if that was a test of animating Gorillaz ... then they've got a loooong way to go.
Gorillaz was lame, sorry. Madonna tried valiently to save the opening act, and did give it a bit of much-needed ooomph ... but I think the whole opening sorta fell flat.
'Course, that was on TV. I'll never forget how much better I found the Grammy's to be when I was actually in the audience. Musical numbers or no, I've always found them sorta boring on television.
(Oh, and I think that was actually a diaper, not a tighty-whitey.)

No, Murdoc was wearing a tighty whitey.
BTW: You saying you don't like Gorillaz or Madonna is like you saying the sky is blue.

Well, while I'm clearly not a fan of either of the hugely popular musical performers / fictional characters ... I am on record as enjoying Madonna live on two occasions (one of them actually at the Grammy's). And I had no problem with the music Gorillaz performed ... my judgment of "poor" was on the animation itself. Lackluster and dull. Unconvincing and unentertaining.

Were you expecting them to look more like real people ?

No, silly, they looked fine in 3-D ... they were just animated poorly, imo. Movementwise.

I watched the link and found myself underimpressed in some ways. They just didn't do much. A standard act at the grammys does more, doesn't it? (I wouldn't know, I don't watch.) The one with the Flea-imitation underwear was just gross, not funny or shocking. The interaction with the live action was pretty good though.

Wow, this is a zombie thread from the dead. But, um, Madonna is at the Forum this week, and I enjoyed the show very much.
OMG, I've now seen Madonna live more times than many a musical artist I far more love. WTF?
