View Full Version : Self-awareness: do you and I agree about me? about you?

The Johari Window (http://kevan.org/johari) is taking the blog world (or, at least my personal microcosm) by storm.

The Johari Window was invented by Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingram in the 1950s as a model for mapping personality awareness. By describing yourself from a fixed list of adjectives, then asking your friends and colleagues to describe you from the same list, a grid of overlap and difference can be built up.

I'd be interested in seeing how solid everyone's sense of self is. If you wish, start your own at the website listed above, and then paste your own personal Johari Window link in this thread.

I think what it does it tells you how other's view you - the more people who respond, the more trends you see in the scores.

If those are at odds with the way you see yourself, it could be a bit revalatory.

I am curious about how the descriptors were chosen, many seem similar to me, and some are missing altogether.

So far I've learned that above everything else, people seem to think I'm smart. So I guess that's cool, though I probably value some of the other traits more.

I did it in another venue. Without also having negative attributes on the list it seems pretty one sided (there's a big difference between "you're smart" and "you're a prick about being smart"), though more interesting than most of these are that go around the internet.

blueerica
02-12-2006, 12:29 AM
However, some words may have a negative implication to depending the reader and the writer, and what is understood and perhaps unsaid between them. Someone who's always considered themselves, foward, agressive, cutting-edge, etc... Might be offended if someone didn't think along those lines. There's a positive spin and a negative to just about every attribute.

Hmmm, I've answered self-conscious for the people I thought it applied - but I didn't necessarily see it as a negative. But we all bring our values to the traits at hand. Personally, I was annoyed that words like Artistic, talented, and creative were missing from the list.

I think what's also interesting it to see what remains in the "unknown" quadrant, While I may be intelligent, clever, wity, ingenious, etc - I seem to be missing out on the loving, caring giving, which might be a subtle way of spelling out Alex's "Smart/Prick" archtype.

I was wondering about the lack of "negatives" too, but now that I think about it...why? I mean, would I need some of those terms to describe myself? Gosh, I guess so. I'm thinking of stuff like: self-absorbed, anti-social, dishonest, selfish, greedy, jealous. Not that I'd choose those in particular, but shouldn't they be there? The people brave enough to actually input on others have my respect. I originally thought that I could not fill in for another, but I am intrigued (and not offended in the least) by the responses of the two that have contributed.

Some words I can see even if I did not choose them myself. Others kind of made me laugh and wonder what I've done to make someone perceive me that way. I'm actually much more fascinated by this than the "positive" version. Because of that fascination I am wondering if I should do it for (to?) another.

Also, past one or two of the "aloof"s and "loud"s, does anybody else have trouble coming up with negative traits for the people around them? It requires that you enter five, and I don't think I actually know five nohari descriptors for anybody here.

BTW, Lisa, your Nohari comments refer to you "SPACE NAZI" mode. ;)

Oh yeah. You got that right. I'm sort of glad I don't do that very often.

I can't, Bornieo- not even as a joke! I know, I just tried. I got stuck on 'needy', and that's as far as I could go....:D

Gotta stop being so sweet, dear.

Eh, I only got two responses - I figured I'd at least get some retaliatory comments. I guess I have to work on my badness level

It's actually kind of fun to see how different groups of people respond. Right now mine are LoT folks compared with Cit+ people from way back. I think the nohari one is the most interesting, because the Cit folks have way more dirt on me.:D

I find what has been posted about me to be very interesting.

In the Johari, there have been 13 respondants, and 30 attributes listed. Not one of those attributes is above 50%, and only 2 are above 30%. I wonder what that means.

In the Nohari, I have only 3 respondants, with 13 attributes listed. Only two are selected more than once, and one of them really amused me. Dispassionate? I would never, ever describe myself as dispassionate. The other listed twice - boastful - well, I can certainly understand that being selected.

And by the way, I believe I have now done both johari and nohari for everyone with a link posted here. If I have missed anyone, I apologize. Let me know if I missed you and I'll get to it. An I really do want nohari responses. I find them to be really interesting.

Me thinks I don't know myself very well, and that you people are too nice.

Although, self-concious seems to be tried and true. "Complex" is rather surprising, but it's making me grin.

I hope to get to everyone's eventually. But I've been working between 10 - 13 hours a day for the past couple of weeks, so it may be a while...

There' a lot of people around here that need to get crackin' on this.

Here I was happily going about my business, having filed in the back of my mind the johari/nohari windows, and then CP has to resurrect it.

Well, since she has and only 4 people have filled in my nohari, get to it, people!
