Isaac Hayes, who has voiced the highly sexed cafeteria employee on the irreverent series since 1997, issued a statement Monday indicating that he has requested to be released from his contract due to what he called the show's "inappropriate ridicule of religious communities."
"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the soul legend said. "Religious beliefs are sacred to people and at all times should be respected and honored. As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."
Though Hayes, a devout Scientologist, made no reference to specific episodes that he felt crossed the line, series creator Matt Stone had little doubt that Hayes' decision was triggered by the November 2005 episode "Trapped in the Closet," which satirized the religion's beliefs and practices and featured "cameos" by animated versions of Tom Cruise and John Travolta.
"This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology," Stone told the Associated Press. "He has no problem—and he's cashed plenty of checks—with our show making fun of Christians."
<snip>
Past episodes of South Park have skewered Catholics, Jews and Mormons, among others. However, according to Stone, he and Parker "never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology.
"He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin," Stone told the Associated Press.
<snip>
In January 2006, Hayes told the New York Daily News that he loved the "humor in it, the audacity of Matt and Trey."
"Nobody is exempt from their humor," he said. "They're equal-opportunity offenders. Don't be offended by it. If you take it too seriously, you have problems."
It seems the silky-voiced crooner may have neglected to take his own advice.I really liked Chef and (assuming they don't get a replacement for him) I will miss seeing him on the show. But Hayes' departure just reeks of hypocritical bullshďt—something I've grown to be accustomed to when dealing with Hollywood's Scientologists.

I have to admit, I was surprised by Hayes' earlier comments regarding 'equal-opportunity offenders', and not at all surprised by his latest actions. He probably got called in for an audit, and no doubt realised he was not being a proper defender of the faith. :rolleyes:

Can't say I've ever watched South Park, but I do find myself wondering...
Have they ever taken a shot at Alla and/or Islam in general?

Lame. Shortly after that episode aired, I learned that he was a Scientologist and wondered what his reaction was. Too bad this was my answer.

:mad: What a fvcktard. He should return all the money they've made him. Too bad the publicity he got from the show can't be taken away. His career was dead as a doornail when they dug him up.

I think his departure is lame. I have to agree with Stone's quote here:
"In ten years and over 150 episodes of 'South Park,' Isaac never had a problem with the show making fun of Christians, Muslim, Mormons or Jews," Stone said in a statement issued by the Comedy Central network.
"He got a sudden case of religious sensitivity when it was his religion featured on the show."

I'm dying to find out what's to become of Chef. Replace his voice or kill him off. Should be interesting. You never know what they'll do next. I mean, these guys killed off Jesus in a Christmas episode for Christsake.

I'm thinking the 22nd. That's the day the first ep of this season premieres. They have time to fiddle with it. They'll probably address it right away.

Temporarily anozinizing our episode will NOT stop us from keeping Thetans forever trapped in your pitiful man-bodies. Curses and drat! You have obstructed us for now, but your feeble bid to save humanity will fail! Hail Xenu!!!"
The duo signed the statement "Trey Parker and Matt Stone, servants of the dark lord Xenu."

This is what I get for listening to crappy radio morning show "reporting". I can't find anything online to corroborate, but...
I heard something saying that Isaac Hayes' family denies that he quit the show on the grounds of Scientology. Hayes had a stroke in January and that's why he's been MIA. They also claimed that the Closet episode would be shown on Comedy Central again either tonight or tomorrow night.
This all sounds like BS, especially after reading the online articles, but I thought I'd throw it out there.
I can't wait to watch them rip him a new one. :evil:

To resurrect this thread rather than starting a new one on Southpark....well, I guess this applies more to comedy central than to Southpark.
Matt and Trey are equal opportunity offenders, so I hold nothing against them. However, Comedy Central finds it necessary to black out the cartoonish Mohammed, but it's OK to have Jesus defacating on several things in the same episode.
I did not witness this, I have only read/heard about it. Is this truly what happened? I have never actually watched Southpark, so I really don't know.

Yeah, I don't understand why they would censor some and not other offending stuff. Fear perhaps. I would hope that Christians have gotten enough ridicult lately to be able to take a joke. Maybe the Muslims' sense of humor is on the fritz.

I'm not sure the "pulling" of the Scientology episode (Trapped in the Closet (http://www.southparkstudios.com/show/display_episode.php?season=9&id1=912&id2=141)) was quite the same as the pulling of the "stigmata" episode (Bloody Mary (http://www.southparkstudios.com/show/display_episode.php?season=9&id1=914&id2=143)). My impression is that Bloody Mary was pulled from future broadcasts specifically because of protests from Catholics (the producers/CC have said as much) whereas Trapped in the Closet's missing repeat the same week of Hayes' departure was just to let temperatures cool down for a bit. I don't recall reading anything about an official protest over TitC, other than rumors of Tom Cruise's alleged refusal to promote Mission Impossible 3 if it wasn't pulled. Do I think Cruise is capable of such shenanigans? Hell yes! But until I hear something from Matt & Trey confirming the rumors, I'm not going to jump to that conclusion.
