We're going tobe visiting Boson from April 10 -16. YAY! Chris will be working Tu-Th but we'll have the rest of the time to explore. I've visited Boston once when I was 15 and have no memory of the city itself. I DO remember the Mayflower II and visiting Plymoth, which is just outside of the town.
So, I've purchased the requisite travel guide but, so far, only have 2 ABDOLUTE things I want to do:
Visit the enormous Pre-Raphaelite collection at the Fogg Museum
Spend time with GC and RaplhieBut, with so much to choose from, I can't seem to decide on more. I will probably do a lot of exploring and walking while Chris is working leaving the rest of the time for joint exploration.
So, do those of you who have visited Boston or know the City have any favorites?
I'm half tempted to rent a car and drive to Newpor RI or Cape Cod just to see. Did you EVAH!

The Old People went there last summer. They stayed at a campground outside of town and took a train in. They did some sort of tour group thingy while in town. My mom said she was glad they didn't try to drive in and see things that way. They loved their tour. If you want to get more info I can ask her what tour it was.

From what I've heard: don't try to drive your own way around Boston.
Or was that Philadelphia... now I can't remember.

That is a nice number of days~will Chris be with you all of the time or will you be touring a bit on your own?
Sounds great~I think I would rent the car and head up to the Cape. At least in my non geographically straight mind I would. Is it quite a drive?
Tell GC and Ralphie 'Hey!' for me, K?
And, have fun!

We used to summer in the Cape. It's still fantastic (we were even there 2 years ago). The drive to the Cape isn't a big deal, with one caveat: the lower part of the Cape (the "upper cape" - I know, don't ask), is nowhere near as cool as the upper part (the "lower cape"). If you're not going to drive to Truro, Wellfleet or Provincetown, don't do it.
There's plenty to see in Boston, too. So if you don't get out of the metro area, you'll still have a blast. I assume you'll cross the river and check out Cambridge. As far as I'm concerned, it's as much Boston as Hollywood is LA.

From what The Old People said, both were bad, but Boston was far worse. Then again, they are Old, so everything to them (at least Mom) is bad. Heck, she gripes about the traffic from my side of town to hers.

This is going to be great fun. There are a couple of restaurants that we have in mind. There's also lots and lots to do. Ralphie and I have done a great deal but have saved a lot of things in order to do them with our friends from out of town.
I'm also going to finagle a couple of days off from work. It's time for some time off.

Hehehehehahahaha! I LOVE Newbury Street! Chris then met me for a trip to the FLUEVOG store then for dinner at aTapas restaurant where we ate all sort of woodland creatures. We then walked up Commomwealth St where the wealth was anything BUT common. Now we're back at the hotel. Chris is ironing and I'm ready to snooze.
Lunch with GC was DIVINE as always. We must do it again sometime soon.
I scoped out the most fabulous pen store where Chris will soon give up his first born.
Now, if I could just get used to this time change........
Tomorrow's activities are yet to be decided, but if the weather holds out as beautiful, I will be outside.
No swan boats yet and no real swans were spotted. :( But, I saw Canada Geese and a Robin or two.
Oh and two words said in the vioce of Leo from Twin Peaks.....new shoes :spitdribbledribble:

OMG! We just had the BEst PIZZA I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! GC and Ralphie took us to a wonderful pizza place in the North End then we went to Modern Pastry for cannolis. I am one happy camper right now. Plus, it was great to see Ralphie again and get caught up on his adventures with undersea life. My Captain Nemo is jealous.
Chris went nuts at Bromfield Pen Shop and matched my shoe extravagenza in small, pointy objects.
I walked all over the North End, Financial District, and downtown and walked most of the Freedom Trail today. My poor tootsies. But, at least my major foot troubles seem to be getting better.
Tomorrow I will meet GC for lunch, walk Beacon Hill and possibly hit one or two museums. Friday is Cambridge and Harvard play time with Ralphie. Saturday, we may go further out and about, possibly Salem and some nice oceaside town. I still haven't eaten lobster.
This is a really great town and easy to get around in. I love it!

Regina's Pizzeria totally rocked last night. They were right on the money with their pizza. We go there often. The place has a lot of character. It was unusually uncrowded last night and Ralphie came up with the answer that everyone was at the Red Sox game. He was right.
We went to Modern Pastry for cannolis and they were wonderful as always. I also had marzapan (sp?) for the first time last night. It's better than I thought it was going to be. (I've brushed my teeth numerous times, but I still feel like I can taste it. Weird, no?)
€ and NA's hotel room is mega-swanky. The lobby is fab.
We had a splendid time. We chatted the night away.

So, today Chris got to sleep in. It was nice.
Then we went to Hahvahd to visit Ralphie and tour the Natural History Museum (ancient taxadermy animals) and see some fabulous art at the Fogg museum. Now, we're back at the hotel until we meet the boys for Chinese in Chinatown.
Last night, we ate at a really swanky restaurant in downtown called Mantra (http://www.mantrarestaurant.com/). Fantastic food and ambience.
My body is just about worn out with all of the walking. It feels great to walk everywhere but I'm certainly not used to it.
Tomorrow we'll go back up to the lab to see what's on the slap then shivver in ...............Salem with the ghosts of whitches past. Somewhere in there, I'm having lobster.

No lobster - at least to eat, but we did have a fantastic day with Ralphie and GC. We first went to Walden Pond and hiked around for a bit. There was a really good actor playing Thoreau who invited us into his tiny tiny cabin and, after being initially freaked out, I loved listening to and chatting with him. I'm amazed how close to civilization proper a completely rural area lies.
We then went off to Salem and wandered around there for the afternoon. I took way too many pictures in the graveyard, searched for black cat items and walked out to a lighthouse in the harbor. We found many old pottery shards lying about that presumably were dredged up from the bottom of the bay. There is also a replica of a tall ship moored on the spit of land that holds the lighthouse. I misread the name as "Friend of Satan" (it was called Friend of Salem ).
We then went back to Harvard for a tour of Ralphie's lab and a visit with pickled deep sea creatures.
It was a fabulous day spent exploring new places with great friends. I am utterly exhauster but satisfied.
Tomorrow we will pack our belongings, take one last excursion and get on a plane home to kitties. But, I WILL miss sweet Frodo when I'm gone. He's turned into an AWSOME dog (with awsome parents).

To add to NA's account, we saw the whale-Koi of Walden Pond - quite impressive - and great fun talking about Steven Tyler and Devo in some witchcraft museum as Ralphie and GQ worried outside when the museum closed and we stayed inside.
Someday, we will post some pictures.

A bit late to the Boston report party but I woke up Sunday morning with a cold. Lucky me.
I had an absolutely wonderful weekend with Not Afraid and €uroMeinke. The rain, socks, Chinese food and the world's smallest dessert on Friday. Green muffins, a long leg in my crotch, Walden Pond, whale carp/koi, dropping my trousers in a parking lot, witches, tombstones, pickled sea creatures and a happy corgi on Saturday.
I found out wonderful things about Lisa and Chris this weekend as well. Like did you know Lisa has an uncanny ability to know exactly where to go in Boston? She has a wonderful sense of direction. She knows more about the streets around here after being here for a week. I know nothing about them having been here for 8 months. And Chris has wonderful taste in pens.

So, after we packed we went an walked about town some more. We walked through Beacon Hill, stopped at at Starbucks for fortification and, while there, I gave a tourist directions to the Sports Authority store on Washington. Now, how in the HELL do I know about a Sports Authority store? And, why did I know how to get there from the Starbucks in Beacon Hill.
Anyways, we walked Beacon Hill, walked through the Gardens and saw the swan boats in action then went over to Legal Seafood where I finially got my Lobster. It was yummmmmmy!
Walking back, I actually got a bit cold - the first time I was cold the entire week. I guess it really IS time to put the wool in cedar.
