So I hear that Red Wine is "supposed" to be good for you. I guess your heart, blood vesels and colon.

I don't know.

I thought I'd try to save my ass and start drinking a bit of wine. What kind of wine do you drink and why?

White wine only. Red wine makes me break out in hives, no matter what type I drink. Some frenchperson I am.

In reds, my favorites are Merlots, Bourgandies, Beaujolais, and Pinot Grigio. I like my red wine to have really strong flavor, whether it's dry or sweet.

Whites, I particularly like Pinot Noir. It tends to have much more interesting flavor than a standard Chardonay.

And I'm a big fan of a good class of Port, a dessert whine. Mmmmm, so satisfying and relaxing.

Wine goes straight to my legs and hits me really fast. I'm really bummed because I'd like to learn more about the different types of wines and enjoy a glass with a meal. Right now I enjoy red wine, that's fruity and not too dry. And I drink it when I don't need to go anywhere or move around.

Red. Merlots. Pinon Noirs.

I'm a pinot fan. Noir or grigio, makes no difference to me....just what I'm eating with it usually. I tend to drink pinot grigio most often.

I love chardonnay when I'm eating salmon, which is about once a week, so we usually have a bottle of chardonnay in the fridge.

Really not much of a red wine person, and that's what you have to drink to get the positive effects (which you can also get from the darker grape juices, btw)

Chernabog brought a great Australian wine once that I really liked though. I can't remember the winery name, but I think it was a type of Shiraz... I'll try to remember to ask him one of these days. He showed up at the Hollywood Bowl with it. If the paté I'd bought had been any good, it would have gone great with it, I'm sure. Instead, we just had the wine ;) (I think I'll stick to fancy cheeses for spreads from now on).

Now white wine, that's another story... I stick with the sweet stuff. Reislings mostly. My fave wine though is La Famiglia di Robert Mondavi's "Moscato Bianco". It comes in a really thin bottle. They also make another Muscat wine, "Moscato D'Asti", which is pretty good too. If you haven't developed a palate for wine yet, start on the easy, sweet stuff, and work your way up to the dryer stuff. I like German wines, myself. Not that a Reisling or Gewurtstraminer can't be dry, but they can also be really sweet.

Just repeat after me: Friends don't let friends drink white zin...

Trader Joe's carries some good (and bad) Aussie wines....I'm blanking on all the names right now, but the one I liked the most was a shiraz. We had an Aussie wine tasting night at my friend's house in November. It was a lot of fun. Someone brought vegemite as a joke. :p

Red. Cabernet Sauvignon.

I like a nice dry red wine. I don't like it too sweet. YUM...

I try to drink one glass of Merlot a day, for my health. ;)

Actually it really is for my health, my high cholesterol. I used to not like wine at all, but I've grown to like a nice merlot.

I usually pick whatever mid-priced bottle of wine has the biggest Vonsclub discount at the time.

Someone else also decorated a Barbie doll with bay shrimp.....no one actually knew what shrimp on the barbie meant....so even though we had all heard of it.....for all we knew shrimp on the barbie could actually be a Barbie doll covered in bay shrimp.

And Ally Cat! I loooove 2 buck Chuck still! :D Mmmmm, ants on a log!! You know how to show a girl a good time.

I usually like Pinot over Merlot, but I still love a nive dry Cabernet to have with a steak - yum! Beaujolais is a nice change for a red wine, since it's the only one you can propperly chill, it's also usually best when fresh.

I'm also a sucker for Australian Shiraz and Italian Chiante.

In any case I think the best part about wine drinking is the sampling and finding something you like - buying it till it's no longer available and starting the search agian. It's always fun to have a quest.

I would also recommend that you see the film, Sideways.

There's a 2 buck chuck Beaujolais that's quite tasty. It's usually not out with the end-of-the-aisle display, you have to go into the actual wine aisle to find it.

I forgot about shiraz, I've had quite a taste for those recently!

Yeah, I've become a big shiraz fan, as well. There is a good two-buck chuck version that I'm quite fond of.

I generally prefer reds to whites though.

I'm still a wine wuss, even after many years of training by GD. I still don't like really dry wines, although I have come to appreciate more middle ground flavors. I always mix up the names, so I go the feminine route and let Greg order for me. Pino Grigio is my fave, I think.

Yes, you do like Pinot Grigio (and let me take this opportunity to smack myself for calling Grigio red, and Noir white. Strike that, reverse it).

OK -- I was wondering what that was about, GD.. ;)

But I assumed it was reversed, and failed to mention it.

I worked many years at an Italian restaurant that would hold wine tastings, and even cigar tastings. During my time there, I came to learn a thing or two about wines, sugar content, and what it can do. I tend to not care as much for Shiraz (sometimes spelled Syrah). It seems a bit sweet to me, but I tend to like it over most whites. I'll take a nice Chardonnay, but sometimes I just get headaches. Pinot Grigio is probably my favorite white wine for it's refreshing nature.

White wine alert (but also some reds after 2001)!! If you have sulfa allergies... Don't drink the white, or reds that are less than 4 years old! The sulfur content might do you in, alone!

The tannic acid in most reds (but more so in Cabernets) are also good for the gums, soothing and lowering inflammation. Same thing with iced tea (And no, we're not talking the Long Island variety ;) )...

On a different tangent, for a while I worked for a wine distributor that only distributed imports from the Southern Hemisphere. There are really some spectacular wines they have been growing down there. Sure, some snobs might turn their nose at the lack of a cork, but there's a lot to be said for the freshness (and no cork floaters!). South African wines, I have loved...

Strike that, reverse it.

Hee hee, I say this all the time!! :)

Our neighborhood grocery stores all having wine tasting on the weekends....it's so much fun! One weekend, one of them had to have parking attendants, there was such a crowd. There's nothing like going for a loaf of bread and some apples and getting your drink on for free.

I’m back to enjoying Sauvignon Blanc at the moment. I was drinking quite a bit of Pinot Gris, but it’s really trendy here now and the prices have gone way up as a result, even for the not so great stuff:rolleyes:

Red-wise, I really like Pinot Noir. Again, it’s not cheap, but I love it. A nice Cabernet sauvignon is also yummy.

We have some great vineyards here in NZ, but I also enjoy Australian wine, and trying stuff in Italy and Spain last year was fun:)

Red- I like Merlot, Zinfandel, and Shiraz.

White- anything but Chardonnay. :) I like the dessert wines, though Pinot Grigio is yummy, and I like a lot of the Rieslings.

For the undecided, I might suggest a White Merlot. It's not as dark as a regular red, but has some color to it. Looks great in a glass and tastes pretty good. I tried it on a whim, and turns out to be a good experiment. I think I got it at Trader Joe's.
