A small miracle occured today and both Indi and the baby went to sleep at the same time. Screw productivity, around here that means a nap for mommy. After about an hour of snoozing Karma, my Great Dane, starts barking louder than I've ever heard her before. Waldo (my deaf Great Dane) starts about 30 seconds later. This woke up the baby, cutting my nap short.
We lingered in bed for a minute then got up to glare at the dogs. I come out and look downstairs. I see that the front door has been opened, only to be stopped by the top latch thingy. I go down, there's no note or anything, but our newspaper has been thrown inside. The nextdoor neighbor's house still has a newspaper in the driveway.
If it was someone that wanted to give us the newspaper, why would they make a point of leaving the door open? My family is all at work, I can't think of anyone that would come over in the afternoon. We live in a pretty nice neighborhood in a pretty safe town.
I'm sure there is some explanation other than someone was coming to harvest my organs and sell my kids in the white slave trade, and I'm just too paranoid to see it. Perhaps the newspaper fairy was only visiting every other house today? Ideas? And more importantly, why wasn't my Sheltie barking? Useless little dogs.

That is creepy! Is there any chance that your front door wasn't closed all the way and the latch didn't catch and when the newspaper hit the door it managed to somehow open and roll inside?

Oh super Creepy!!!!
I wish I could be more logical but I have to admit I would be seriously freaked out as well and nothing would make sense except yes, some crazy person almost got me today.......... But maybe BTD is right. And then what's with the newspaper inside?????

The newspaper was in the driveway. It just occured to me that I didn't look inside the newspaper plastic. If it's a severed hand or something I'll let you know.

Ok, well Michael just came home and said that newspaper has been on the floor for several days. (We're reorganizing laundry in the front room so it's pretty messy.) So I suppose it's possible that someone knocked and the door came open, or the wind blew it open (even though it isn't windy), or the person that was coming to harvest my organs and sell my kids doesn't even have the decency to put a newspaper in my door. Overreaction #3,542.

OMG, Prudence that story used to keep my up at night when I was a kid. That and Lallarona (I have no idea how that is spelled). To make things worse, Indi and I walked to the park tonight along the mile long path that is near our house. There were four police cars and a cop going around asking people if they had seen a guy in a red hat and shirt. I asked him if it was safe to walk home and he says, "I dunno. Probably." Thanks.

You weren't able to get my... er, any fingerprints were you?

Lol, I was wishing for a spy kit so I could dust for prints. I don't know what I would do with them if I had them, but it sounded fun.

I learned that if you get some silicone adhesive (found in the paint section of your local harware store with the caulking), and rub a little on your fingertips, you will not have any fingerprints.
I learned this when working with silicone on a project several months ago. Handy to know if you feel like starting a life of crime.

IT sounde like it is time to invest in a security screen door. I know they are not the most attractive things in the world, but I would never ever have a house without one.

I suppose it was a good thing you didn't have to call the cops after the discovery of a severed hand....

Frodo will bark at the sounds he hears throughout the house. The dogs may be conditioned to bark at the door opening. If the wind blew open the door, they might be reacting to the sound of the door opening. However, when there's someone at the door and Frodo sees him/her, his bark is vastly different. It is more intense and evil sounding. Do your dogs have a different bark when they see someone? Was that kind of bark you heard? It may be a clue.
Also, do you usually keep the bottom door lock locked? Or do you rely totally on the latch at the top? I'd get into the habit of locking the door with the lock on the knob if you have one. If it was locked, then someone jimmied the door open. Is there evidence of that anywhere?
I'd also invest in an automatic sensor that turns on the light when someone is at the front door.
My 2 cents.

It was her, "sound the alarm" bark, but she may have just thought someone was at the door. She was pretty nervous for an hour or so afterward. Laid by the stair rails (you can see the door from the second floor living room) and watched the door, etc.
It was only the top latch that was locked. Honestly, I'm horrible about locking doors. The latch probably wouldn't even be locked, but it's the only thing keeping Indi from opening the door. I suppose I should be more vigilant. Fortunately, if someone does manage to get past the locks they'll have to deal with 300+ pounds of dane.

The one from my childhood is something like this (http://bettersoft.deadbeatclub.com/golden.htm) only much scarier.

They made a movie out La Lollorona. (http://www.lallorona.com/trailer.html) I couldn't make it through the trailer. They used to show Lollorona on commercials in New Mexico when I was a kid to warn kids to stay out of the arroyos.

tracilicious ~ I hate to say it, but I think someone tried to get into the house. I talked to my father who was a police detective for the Honolulu Police Dept and he thinks the Great Dane scared someone off. He said it would be common for someone to leave the door open upon hearing/seeing the dogs, they bolted quick. Please use caution. As we heard with Betty's grandmother, crooks do try sh!tty things a second time. My dad always errs on the side of being super cautious and often tries to think like the person committing the crime.

That is pretty scary. I've already locked the main lock (we rarely use the front door, so it should stay that way for a while). I think I'll also start bringing a dane to the park, just for my own peace of mind.

Hopefully it was a chance opening of the door, rather than an intruder. Having a dog makes you a lower target- they'll pick a dog-less house next time. Hooray for loud dogs!
