Lately, thanks to Netflix, I have been renting "Strangers with Candy" on DVD and have been watching it non-stop for the past two days. I have never seen this show before on Comedy Central but saw it advertised a lot. I hadn't realized that the lead was Amy Sedaris. (I'm a huge David Sedaris fan and had to see Amy in action after hearing about her fat suit trick on her father.)
I've watched Seasons 1 & 2 and love the show and most of all her.
Now, when I researched her bio on imdb.com, I see that there is a "Strangers with Candy" movie coming out. It apparently was screened at Sundance.

Can I just say that I can't wait to see it?

Anyone else fond of this show?

:)

I've been waiting to borrow a buddy's copy for all the reasons you just mentioned.

PS David's "Plague of Tics" still breaks me up every time I read it.

You know, I have never seen any of these shows. They are in my Netflix queue, on my Amazon Wishlist I've even fingered them a few times at various stores, but I've never seen them.

Now, just about anything else the Sedaris Family does is an indicator enough that I NEED to experience it. But, I have never gotten to these particular morsels. But, some day, I will.

BTW, if you likde Davis Sedaris, try Augusten Burroughs (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=books&field-author=Augusten%20Burroughs/104-9620204-9286314). I haven't read the latest collection of short stories yet, but I have read his 2 memoirs and love them both for their hilarity and insanity. But, be warned, while David's mother is a bit crazy, Augusten's mother is certifiable. It made me appreciate his humor all the more.

I hear 'Running with Scissors' is going to be made into a film. I haven't read it yet, but I plan to.

Both Running with Scissors and Sellavision (which I haven't read) have been optioned. Annette Benning has been cast as his mother in "Scissors" and Gwynth is going to be, I presume, Hope - which is good IMHO. But, if you haven't read it, that won't matter to you. ;)

I like David Sedaris. I don't particularly like Strangers with Candy. It's got it's ammusing moments, but mostly it hits me as one of those shows that just tries too hard to be weird.

If anyone is interested, I have a DVD that contains a film of the actual woman that Amy Sedaris' character is based on. She's giving a talk to teens about the dangers of drug use (the disc was compiled by a SWC fan, so it has a bunch of other related stuff, too). It's pretty amazing to see the roots of Jerri Blank.

PM me if you want a copy.

What GD said.

Also, her character in Strangers is so disturbingly ugly, I can't watch it.

She's pretty out of her SWC makeup.

FYI, just did a quick screen grab.
Here's what Florrie Fisher, the "real" Jerri Blank looked like:

I love it love it love it. Blood fart!!!!!

It took after school special TV and managed to make a comedy that was more original than parody. I love Ms Blank. It's chaos tied up in a bizarre and ugly bow and I just adore it.

Very excited about the film.

:)I figured as much. But the teeth combined with the wrinkles and hair and annoying voice she does....bleh.

I knew this guy at my synagogue and he had the weird teeth/jaw thing....so my brothers dubbed him "Strangers with Candy" and called him "Strangers" for short. Not to his face, of course.

"I cried when I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet. And then I laughed REALLY hard."

From a wonderful little CD by the Foremen:

" I was feeling sorry for myself
Because I had no shoes

But then I met a man who had no feet
And I said, "Friend, can I have your shoes?"

Oh no!!! I'd written a loooong ode of love to Amy Sedaris and Stephen Colbert, but I accidentally erased it!! I spent my morning watching the second disc of Season 2!! Chloe has the flu, so she's been in bed....I feel crappy and tired, so I've been in Strangers With Candy-Land all morning. Loving it. :D

I have a maaaajor big girl crush on Amy Sedaris. Oh my gosh, I've loved her long and hard. When David writes about her, I crinkle up my nose and smile like an idiot. I love her. I love that he loves her....and accepts her. Cause, she's an odd duck. But that's why I admire her so.

I'm on this site all the time, keeping updated. I haven't read the fan fic yet, but dang, I'm almost there.

As for the movie.....the cast is pretty incredible! I've read that Matthew Broderick's teacher character comes between Jellineck and Noblet and that Sarah Jessica Parker is playing a French teacher.

Paul and Kathy Sedaris have bit parts.....Paul (hee hee, always known to me as Silly P!) is David and Amy's younger brother. Here's a link to his site:

and his flooring site:

If you like the mixed metaphors and loopy language used in SWC, you might like to read Amy, Stephen, Paul, and Todd Oldham's book, Wigfield. If you don't like that stuff, don't read the book. It's a satire fuuuulll of the plays on words that they use in SWC. It can be annoying. I liked it. Especially the pictures....funny stuff.

Stephen, Paul (look at those lips!) and Amy

As for Stephen Colbert.....I'm obsessed. I want him to throw me down and have his way with me. I want to rip off those glasses and play Gary to his Ace of the Ambiguously Gay Duo. I want him to raise his eyebrow as he undresses me. He's just so freaking funny, smart, and hiLARious. He's handsome.......sigh. And so funny on the Daily Show. God, I love him!!!

Okay, I'm going back upstairs to watch more SWC. :snap:

Doh! I remember part of what I accidentally erased earlier......

Last night I had a dream that I was a student in Noblet's class and I was teasing him about Jellineck. He wasn't happy about it.....and when I woke up, I realized I was probably Jerri in my dream. Not cool!

One of our favorite episodes is the one with the health class baby and Jerri turns into an abusive husband to Tammi Littlenut. :D Good stuff! I'm pretty sure my husband has seen it about ten times. He's got the whole thing memorized. He's always knocking stuff on the floor and growling, "Pick it up!" And has noticed a LOT of the background stuff in the whole episode.

My favorite background poster is "Success has 3 S's." And we hit pause so we can read the blackboards, too. Nerdly! Our favorite blackboard is the.....um...pubic region shapes. So funny. My husband was about to die laughing when he finally noticed.

Claire is OBSESSED. You are cracking me the frig UP.

I can't wait to see the Rooster in live action glory.

Don't **** with the Rooster.

Sedaris' essay about their wedding is one of my all-time favorite reads.

Strangers with Candy has gotten good buzz after the Sundance viewing:

The Good, The Bad & The Indifferent
I was able to watch 20 films over four days and it was definitely mind-numbing. Let's start off with...

The Good:

"Strangers With Candy (http://movies.msn.com/movies/movie.aspx?m=567044)"
Not surprisingly the funniest film I saw, the cult TV show translates well to the big screen. The language is looser, the comedy is more adult and the additions of big name actors such as Matthew Broderick (http://movies.msn.com/celebs/celeb.aspx?c=155824) and Sarah Jessica Parker (http://movies.msn.com/celebs/celeb.aspx?c=203305) fit seamlessly.
