"O What a Night..."

After some pre-performance butterflies, the show started off with a bang. After several weeks of rehearsal, everything just clicked last night. The pacing was right, the sound cues went right, everything was ideal...

It was a great opening night. The house was pretty full for the intimate space that it is. Ralphie and a bunch of our friends showed up. It was nice hearing familiar laughs in the house.

Afterwards, there was a cast party at a restaurant called Redbones. We stayed for a very short while. I needed to leave before midnight in order to wake up at 6am this morning. Ugh.

I think the real star of the evening was Ralphie. He made me a special pre-show dinner and gave me flowers and a gift card to Tower Records (woo-hoo!). He was so very happy all night. It was great. All the female cast members were dying to meet him afterwards. They were so very curious about the elusive Mr. Ralphie. :)

So, I'm running on about 5 hours of sleep, but so far so good. I'm posting here, that means I made it to work okay.

How's the show going?
The show is going splendidly.
The one hitch to this production was that we did not get to do many run throughs during rehearsal. In fact, I think we only did a total of 2 full run throughs. It's really hard for me to get up to speed and completely offbook without running it a lot. So it was a bit challenging. Thankfully, it's easier and easier to do each night.
Saturday's show was by far our best show. The audience was amazing and they really liked Mr. DePinna. It was almost sold out. I got a lot of wonderful feedback afterwards.
Sunday was a matinee and the audience was dead silent. It was a full house but a house full of dead people. :D
We have three more shows this week and a Sunday set strike. And then Sunday night it's auditions again. This summer, the theatre is doing 7 one act plays. Each one act is about 10 minutes long. I've been asked to audition for a couple of them. It's totally flattering. I kind of like the momentum of jumping on to something else right away, so I'm thinking I'll audition this Sunday. I don't know, I'm kind of exhausted right now...

Tonight was so weird. The audience was dead silent. There were a few guffaws here and there but no all out laughing. It was dreafully hard to keep the energy flowing. I come out in a toga and nothing... no laughter. Then at the end of the show, they go absolutely ape sh!t. Applauding, screaming, standing... it was incredible. I guess they were having a good time after all.

Ugh! It's got to be pure agony acting in that sort of environment, but tres cool that the audience was appreciative, even if it was at the end of the show. Audience dynamics can be so flukey and hard to read sometimes. I admire people that can push past that and continue on- I'd be tempted to stop and say "What's up your asses, people?!"

Probably a good thing that I'm not an actor.

I'm not sure if I posted this before but here goes:

The other night I had this weird dream. For some reason, I was at a family reunion with all of my relatives that I dislike. They all were laughing at me telling me that I was wasting my time doing theatre. That lasted for about 2 seconds in my dream until I had this 'Harper Valley PTA' moment where I told each and every one of them off. The moment I did that, I was transported to a huge ballroom. In the center of the ballroom was the Mad Hatter's table filled with spinning cups and tea kettles. The table was huge, so huge that the actor who plays Grandpa in the play (the man who tells us all that doing what you love is more important than making money) takes me by the hand and starts to waltz with me on the table. He's smiling, I'm smiling. It was like a scene from 'Evita' where Che and Evita waltz. In fact, that song 'Waltz for Eva and Che' played while we did it.

But how long do you think this pantomime can last?

The dream ended with grandpa and I having fun dancing.

Great dream! Not to mention that the actor who plays Grandpa is in his early forties and is a hottie. :D

I think I will make that leap into the next. If they'll have me. The auditions for the one-acts are on Tues & Wed. It totally feels great to be asked. :) Post-show blues sometimes hit me hard. Other times it's post-show rejoicing. :D I'm not sure what it'll be this time. I kept a distance from this cast for some reason. I didn't want to jump into any 'so in so doesn't like so in so' and 'I'm not talking to so in so' and 'let's pretend like we like each other'. That stuff's just as tiring as rehearsing. :D

My face is totally drying out from all the makeup I wear in the show. At one part a firework was supposed to go off in my face offstage. So I walk on with black soot all over my face. Getting that soot off does a number on my skin. So I do the cold cream thing at night. Everytime I put it on I feel like I'm Bette Davis in 'All About Eve' where she spends a whole scene putting cream on her face. :D

Our last show was great. We sold out and some people even had to stand. So cool.

Best part of all was that my friends came from DC to see me in the show. What a great surprise. After the show was over, Ralphie told me he wanted to meet a couple of people from his work. So I go over to a group of people and there are my bestest friends from DC. I was moved to tears. What a wonderful surprise.

The cast party was fabulous. Had a great time...

I also shared my dream with the whole cast for our closing night circle. They loved it. The guy playing grandpa and I waltzed for them. I can't waltz to save my life. But it was fun. :D

Auditions are tomorrow for the Summer One Acts Festival. A Diva's life must go on...

Went to my audition last night for the one act festival. It was pretty fun. There are about 7 mini-plays in all. I got to read for 4 of them. Talk about schizophrenia! We should be hearing back from them soon.

I got a friend of mine to audition, too. She told me the other day that she wanted to try acting. So I told her about the auditions. She signed up. She did great. Her first audition ever. She totally rocked. I hope she gets in.

The role is Peter and he's a psychic who is dating a woman who is frustrated with the fact that he can read her mind and anticipate her emotions, words, everything. Totally cool. I'm going to study David Blaine for the role. I can look like him if I try.

Arsenic and Old Lace opened last night (runs July 12 - August 19, Wed through Sat., 2 shows on Sat.). Still a bit clunky though, tonight's show should be right on the mark. About 300 people in the house, very nice. Interesting thing I've never had happen before, my curtain call is the one where the audience goes a little nuts! Really surprised me - actually threw me physically off balance. But I like it! I'll take more, please! If they had only known the drama I was having backstage with costumes and props, oy! A show all by itself, and not a cute one. At one point I couldn't find a prop in the lobby, had to run up a flight of stairs, across the entire length of the stage and audience, run down two flights of stairs to not find my prop. Reverse the process (at full speed in presidential regalia) back to the lobby, to be handed the prop which was cleverly hidden behind a couch, and make my entrance while trying not to A) throw up, or B) experience explosive diarrhea. I finally caught my breath somewhere near the last 10 minutes of the third act. Apparently, I did get a bloody nose, which I didn't discover until late in the show. Bleh.
Anyhow, hope all the LoTers in Socal during the next six weeks can come, it's a fun one, they do everything except actually cut the scenery up into bite-sized pieces for me!

There was a huge debate in the drama department at my University about color blind casting. I've never understood it, really, and it makes no sense. Can an African American or someone who is Hispanic play Tony? I suggested they produce Master Harold and the Boys with color blind casting, but they weren't amused.

My only problem with this play is that we're the last One Act to go up out of 8. So, we have to do a lot of waiting around in the Green Room. Bleh.

The show went more smoothly for me tonight, no prop drama, no bloody anythings, full house! One weird thing is that the pince-nez I'm wearing are prescription, and not mine. This is the first time I've done a show at this theatre where I can't really see the audience. I had no idea we had a full house until late in the play.

I think I'm getting a crush on the guy that plays Jonathan. Weird.

The festival is going great. We had a big house last night. Lots of great feedback. Everyone's energy was doubled last night. Each piece rocked.

'Surprise' went off well, too. It's tough being the last show to go up, but the crowd was really jonesing to laugh because the one before us was more on the dramatic side. Halway through our piece, moments before I was to get a glass of water thrown in my face, I noticed that the glass was particularly full last night. I thought, 'Well, I'm taking a huge shower in about t minus 10 seconds.' It was a huge splash and the audience laughed.
Ralphie loved it. I got red roses. :)

Glad it went well. Sometimes if the part doesn't call for glasses, I gladly take them off. It's a trick I heard Stevie Nicks uses to ward off stage fright. It helps. But then again, my prescription isn't that strong.

Don't do it, G2D! Run away! :D Having had several stage crushes and having been a stage crush several times, it's not a road to go down. That is, until after the show's over and after you find out the affection is being reciprocated. ;)
