View Full Version : SUPERMAN RETURNS - I have misgivings

I just watched the full trailer for SUPERMAN RETURNS, and while I am highly likely to go see it, there is something in the trailer that makes me worry, a lot. For spoiler-safety purposes, see below, but I won't be giving away anything that isn't in the trailer.
Lois Lane has a little boy! Now, this movie is supposed to take place after the Christopher Reeve Superman II, which means this could be (I almost choke saying this) Superman's kid. I am really frightened that somehow, at the end of this movie, cute little boy will show himself to be Superboy! I will not enjoy that.
Also, while I'm at it, there is a scene in the trailer in which Kevin Spacey, as Lex Luthor, prompts Lois Lane to say something and then interrupts her by shouting WROOONG! really loud in her face. I hate this moment. I guess it's supposed to be a bit of over-the-top villainy, but it is obnoxious asshole behaviour. It's the sort of thing I expect frat-boy types to do when they descend here at WDW en masse during Spring Break. I want my movie villains to be charming, or funny, or dramatically compelling. But I don't want them to remind me of the sort of mundane brutes that yell in my face at work. It seems like a bad choice to me. Maybe it will play better in context.
With those misgivings out of the way, I do hope it will be a terrific movie, and will give me the same kind of old-fashioned lift that the first film did back in '77.
(P.S. - To any of you here who were or are proud members of a college fraternity, I wasn't talking about you.)

The first sentence of your spoiler shows up in the preview box before you click on the thread.
Now you've ruined it. ;)

How funny, Matterhorn. That seems to be a little bug in the system. Good catch.

Hmmm. It's not doing that on my screen. Anyway, it's not much of a spoiler, as it's information given very early on in the preview.

I have misgivings about any movie that's been through as many hands as this one has. Writers, directors, actors. Eventually, someone's gotta feel like they've sunk too much money and they just put out whatever they can, whether it's good or not.
As for your concerns,
To quote Mallrats, It's impossible, Lois could never have Superman's baby. Do you think her fallopian tubes could handle the sperm? I guarantee you he blows a load like a shotgun right through her back. What about her womb? Do you think it's strong enough to carry her child? He's an alien, for Christ sake. His Kyrptonian biological makeup is enhanced by earth's yellow sun. If Lois gets a tan the kid could kick right through her stomach. Only someone like Wonder Woman has a strong enough uterus to carry his kid. The only way he could bang regular chicks is with a kryptonite condom. And that would kill him.

Just to set the record straight, Mallrats copied (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_of_Steel,_Woman_of_Kleenex)that bit from the classic Larry Niven (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Niven)essay: Man of Steel Woman of Kleenex (http://www.rawbw.com/~svw/superman.html)

From what I understand....
The child is most likely that of Lois' new love interest played by (can't remember his name, but he almost lost his job on X-Men 3 for doing this film). His character is somehow related to Perry White. Not sure if it's his son or his nephew or something. I might be wrong on this though.
I was really scared about a new Supes film back when it was bouncing around in the hands of people like Tim Burton and McG. If the script I saw back then was anywhgere near the direction they had in mind it would have been a complete sacrilege to all things Superman. I like Bryan Singer though and I think he respects the material enough that I trust his vision. I'm actually looking forward to seeing the final product.

I hope you're right. I'll be there regardless.
Oh, and I am so glad it isn't Nicholas Cage. (Good actor, but Superman?)

I saw the trailer before Poseidon. I used to be excited about the movie, but I'm having serious second thoughts. I just get a smell of cheese in the air. It has the potential to be a very mindless movie.

Yeah, just hearing the trailer gave me the cheesewillies. (I was spoiler-avoidance not-looking, but my hearsight made me want to not even bother looking at the movie when it comes out.)
