View Full Version : Some Bunny Needs a Lovin' Home!!!

Hey everyone!
Morrigoon and I rescued a baby bunny from being "set free" in a field, after an irresponsible mother decided that her 2-year-old daughter's "Easter present" was too much of a hassle to keep any longer. (Believe me, I really want to smack the woman.)
Anyway, this bouncy baby boy is currently being fostered at my place, but we can't keep him - Ken and I are already filled to the rim with as many animals as we can properly care for in our apartment.
So, this baby needs a loving home and a name!!! (New bunny parents can decide that one.)
Here he is:
http://pics.livejournal.com/disneyphile/pic/0009s1cs/s640x480
http://pics.livejournal.com/disneyphile/pic/0009rh83/s640x480
http://pics.livejournal.com/disneyphile/pic/0009qg1c/s640x480
And, he will be given free to his new good home with the cage shown:
http://pics.livejournal.com/disneyphile/pic/0009tqgr/s640x480
If any of you would like him, please let me know!! He needs a permanent home ASAP. He's quite the lover too - he's very calm and loves to be held for a long time.
When he came to us, his cage was absolutely disgusting. The idiots had even left the plastic shrink wrap around the lower edges that he could have ingested!! It also had never been cleaned in at least a month, and he didn't even have any traces of proper food - only a handful of baby carrots that were laying amongst piles of poo on the bottom of the cage. So, I've got him all cleaned up and ready to go, and even bought him a small cage litter box that he's already starting to use! When stretched out, he's about 7-8 inches long. He's the cutest little ball of fluff!
I'm even willing to deliver him to you. And, if he doesn't fit well in your home, I'm willing to take him back at any time to be placed again.
Thanks so much!!!
Teresa

You are so cool, DP. If I lived near you, I would take in the little guy, although my cats gave my last bunny a heart-attack.
Him's very cute, and that mother is a frikken idiot. I'll bet she gets Jr a baby chick next year!

A word of advice. A bunny can and will eat just about anything it can get its teeth on. The one my parents had ate through a coax video cable, linolium tiles, and a lamp cord that thankfully wasn't plugged in, among many other things. Keep a good eye on the bunny.

I'll reiterate, phone cords, leather jacket cuffs, fabric piping on upholstery, upholstery, books, album covers, coasters. If it fits in it's mouth, it will get chewed. Tabasco was suggested as a solution, but the bunny found a new home before we had to turn the apartment into a giant hot wing. Otherwise, they're just adorable.
Lampwick. I don't know why, he just looks like a Lampwick.

You know, naming a bunny "Shag" is just asking for trouble.
But it's got so much going for it.
1) You have the obvious Disney/Art connection.
2) Bunnies like to ...well...shag.
3) Your carpet is going to be a delicacy to the little guy and eventually there will be little of it left. He will have ingested the shag, so to speak.

Of course that came back to bite him in the butt a little while later when he left a Z on the coffee table and Bugsy ate most of it! lol Soon after that he kicked me and the bunny to the curb. At least he waited until I graduated to throw us both out.

I had sort of started to refer to him as Mickey, but Munchykin is cute too!
Thank you guys SO much for adopting him!
Okay, so the entire backstory on Munchykin:
I was getting out of my car at home, and as I walked past, I saw some folks at their parking spot with something black and furry in their hands. I said, "Awwwww, is that a puppy?" And the guy said, "No, it's a bunny. Do you want it?" "What? Seriously? No, I can't my dog's a rabbit killer, he'd kill it!" "Yeah, she (meaning his friend, the blonde, irresponsible one) can't keep it. We were just gonna release it in the field..."
"NO! You can't release a domesticated animal into the wild! Please don't do that!" etc. And then one of the friends, actually it may have been the same guy, asked the blonde about calling an animal shelter (pound, basically). I said NO! They'll kill it too! And basically begged her to hang on to it for 24 hours for me to find it a home. Luckily, D-phile came to the rescue, so I went back over and got the bunny.
When I went back, knowing I was going to take the bunny, the blonde had taken her 2-year old into the bath (because the kiddo loved the bunny, obviously). And the woman standing out front told me more of the story.
The woman out front was the daughter of the owner of the condo. Blondie and her daughter lived with them, a renter, basically. Well, one day blondie shows up with this bunny, without asking anyone, mind you, and they were basically like, well, okay, it shouldn't be a problem. Well, it might not have been, except that, as we've already established, blondie isn't the most resposible of people. She has this tendency to take off for a couple days at a time, without bothering to tell anyone she's going or when she'll be back. So a couple days would go by, and the homeowner would be like, we've got to feed that rabbit! So they decided enough was enough and were making blondie get rid of bunny.
Blondie was trying to give it to one of her friends (with whom I apparently interacted), but they couldn't take it for some reason. She claims the "release it in a field" thing was just a joke, but given blondie's history, I still wasn't about to leave bunny with her, because God only knows where he'd have ended up.
So there ya have it, irresponsible woman who can't even take care of a bunny but is charged with the care of a 2-year old child (Lord help us), and imposing upon her rather permissive and forgiving landlady.
But thanks to the generosity of Disneyphile and all the wonderful folks here who showed interest in adopting him, he's now in a wonderful forever home.
:)

He is still a baby, so he'll get better as he grows. Even if he doesn't, you can contain him in areas easily cleaned when you let him out of the kennel- bunnies are usually pretty mellow and don't get into too much mischief. He really is adorable- I'd have taken him in a heartbeat, and I am overloaded with animals at the moment!

That video was SO cute!! Although, I'm really surprised he didn't pull that book down. But, he'll figure out how soon enough. ;) He tried to climb over it a shortly after, so I replaced it with something else. All those barriers are (hopefully) a temporary solution. We're gonna try to find some sort of affordable solution to build a large collapsable pen for him to wander around in when he's out of his cage.

That'd be great if we had a good place with a single point of entry to pen him in. But as it is, there are too many little nooks and corners with wires and such for that. We need something that we can use to completely enclose a safe area so we can let him romp without total surveilance.

I knew you guys had to see the video to believe how fast he is! I'm so scared he's going to scamper behind the couch and force us to move everything to get him out again.
I hope to find something today to pen him in (filled with fun things to play with, of course :) )

It's a Sega Dreamcast.
So far, he's been good about not chewing. Actually, he hardly even chews on the sticks of wood we bought for him to chew on (he'd better start, else he'll have to have his teeth filed regularly). But long term we'll be setting up cord-free zones for him to wander in.

All of my previous rabbits and even Oswald didn't start really chewing until they were a few months old. :)

Mostly just hay (Timothy grass) right now. We've started mixing in a small amount of pellets. He's still too young for veggies. We've got a vet appointment tomorrow, we should have a clearer picture after that.
He didn't pee on me last night, though he got the carpet a couple times. But I'm pretty sure that's because he was intent on claiming a particular corner (with pillows, dark hidey-places, and a tunnel created by the couch and lamp table) for his own. I'd have been happy to give it to him, but unfortunately it's home to a lamp cord, a phone cord, and phone power cord as well as behind-couch access. So much for that.

For all his speediness he can be so serene! He loves to nuzzle. If you rub his nose and head he freezes and just takes it in. I put him on my chest and nuzzle him with my chin. If I stop he pushes closer and nudges me! :)

Well, we found something at Home Depot for all of $12...that almost worked. Some decorative plastic garden edge fencing that turns out to be just a tad short. Took him all of an hour to figure out how to jump over it. So tomorrow it's back to the Depot to hopefully find some sort of mesh material to attach to it and extend the height a bit. If that works out, it's perfect. We can close off our livingroom area, which is a good amount of space and let him wander unsupervised and have free access to his cage.
Wait, breaking news...looks like CP just found a way to double up the fencing that might do the trick. Score.

So, now we're totally set up. We doubled up the plastic fencing (one layer right side up, one layer upside down). That makes it stable, too heavy for him to push under, and too tall to get over. We've plugged up all the escape routes/access paths to wires, and his cage is part of the barrier. So when we're home, we just open the cage and let him have free roam in the livingroom, no worries. We're thinking that once we let him exist in this setup for a while, we may even feel confident enough that we can just never have to close up the cage.
He loves just chilling behind the vertical blinds staring out the glass door. He also likes running around behind our big chair, a great little dark tunnel for him. He's a happy bunny.

The kitties are FASCINATED by the bunny. We let Scoundrel met him first and he's enamoured. Last night, Jack and Dexter got to meet him and, as he hopped toward them, they backed away in fear. Funniest thing ever.
Bunny is saying in the bathroom for the moment. I let him run free most of the time and I have little bunny poops all over the bathroom now. Awwwwww. I put him in his cage when we went out last night and, when I got home, I opened the bathroom door. I walked away for a second and when I came back there were 5 cats all staring into the cage.
I wouldn't leave them alone without supervision, but they cats seem to love the bunny - and not in a lip smacking way.

My parents used to have a bunny who I believe thought he was a cat, being that he was surrounded by 8 of them. He would eat cat food and snuggle next to them and they would get pretty perturbed at first. Later, they grew resigned to the fact that he was going to be hopping around with them all the time.
Very cute to watch. :)

So, Chris has bunbuns for the moment. I made him hold him while I took off my wedding garb and got more comfy. He's amusing himself (the buns not Chris) by grooming his chest hair. :cutesmilie: I had him earlier today after i got back from 3 dog walks, no shower before leaving, and I was scummy! Grrr, little bugger's too smart for us. We've been slowly patching the gaps in our defenses to keep him penned into the living room area as he found weaknesses. But last night, he finally figured out how to scale the main portion of the fencing. So without major modification or finding a wholly new solution, the fencing option is out.
So it looks like we're going the opposite route and just going to let him roam free. I'm heading to the hardware store at lunch to pick up vinyl tubing to bunnyproof all the wires.
The good news is, this will hopefully make us better people as we'll now have to be mindful of the crap we leave on the floor. No more shoes piled in the livingroom.

Fences are no match for bunnies - they're smart little creatures. My last bunny learned to jump over the coffee table lengthwise, clearing it by a couple feet all around. It quickly turned into one of his favorite "sports". ;)

I just hope he doesn't want to sit behind the stereo and munch on vinyl coverings all the time.
I've noticed since we got back that he's much less willing to let us pick him up. It's a bummer, since I used to put him on my chest and nuzzle him - now he jumps away. :(
Maybe it's a growing up thing.
As for crap on the floor - I'll be very glad to have a reason to keep the living room more clean. I'm already vacuuming more often due to the shavings that stick to socks and are transferred all over the house.
Of course this means the bedrooms will now more piles of shoes and crap on the floors. ;)
