I just found out that I'm being sent on a business trip to Fresno for 2 weeks in July. Anything swanky in Fresno?

The average July temperature in Fresno is 97 degrees. I would have sworn it is 110.

I believe swank has a melting point of 87 degrees.

They have stop lights and a Target now, more than when I was a kid.

Someone will know something... that someone just isnt me. :(
Wave hello to my extended family for me.

I know. But the rental car and the hotel will have AC... I'm just hoping the building I'll be working in does too.

I just popped in to say to JW: I'm sorry. I drove through Fresno once- it was horrible. Not as horrible as Armadillo TX, but damned close. It smelled funny, too. Are there rendering plants there?

I gotta drive through Fresno to get to the in-laws. I call it the double whammy. Then I giggle. Then Crystal gives me the stink-eye.

My Brother lives about 40 North of Fresno - he goes to Fresno when he needs a Home Depot or other such amenities. My niece also lives in Fresno as in a nurse at Valley Children's.

Now, I can't tekk you too much about Fresno because, when I go there I spend all my time in the Sierras. But, I DO know there is a decent gay community in Fresno and that Old-Town Clovis is a hot spot.

Beyond that, get in your rental car and drive to Oakhurst & Fish Camp (Highway 41) or Mariposa (Highway 49). Each are about 40 miles-1 hour away on somewhat mountainous roads. Or, better yet, take the weekend and drive to either Yosemite (the Valley is about 2 1/2 hours away but the park entrance is closer and the Mariposa Grove is right inside the Hwy 41 entrance) OR Drive to Kings Canyon, Sequoia, and Boyden Caverns.

San Francisco is also about 2 hours away (acording to my Bro).

I've spend a LOT of time up in Oakhurst and surrounding communities. It's very pretty in the mountains. I also know where some great, unmarked hot springs are off of 41 and there are some GREAT drives to be had if you're into that sort of exploring.

You might want to hang out in this area: http://www.towerdistrictnews.com/sequel.html

You'll just have to ignore the part about "armpit redevelopment, sliding toward the antithesis of its former glamour, with bagmen, beggars, and homeless derelicts roving the alleys and parking lots at night."

Excellent link from a former Fresno native. Tower District is the place!

Personally, I'd avoid Yosemite in the middle of summer but Kings Canyon is worth the drive and doesn't get so crowded.

Yes, July in Yosemite is like July at DL. But, there are places you can go to escape. Sequoia is also a zoo and even Kings Canyon can be busy, but all are beautiful and MUCH better than Fresno.

All will be HOT.

Yeah, that's about right- paper mills are pretty stinky.

They have a decent small zoo...I keep meaning to take Nickolas there, but somehow I never get around to it.

ummm...Clovis has (or used to have) some pretty cool waterslides.

Back in the early-mid 80's, when we were in the process of moving here from Hilmar, my mom pulled off the freeway in Fresno for gas to be told that it was not a good place for her to be and to get back in her car ASAP.

I really can't say much, living in Bakersfield...

The only thing I know about Fresno is that there was a parody of 'Dallas' that was on TV called 'Fresno' in the mid 80's or so. Starring Carol Burnett. She was the head of a raisin tycoon family... I think.

Yes, Yosemite might be packed but you are so close!!

Day trips are cool, like what Not Afraid said. All of the places she mentioned would be nice and if you aren't driving all of the way {like we have to from here} you might be more able to tolerate the masses.

Monterey might not be too far, as well as San Jose and the Winchester House.

Of course, I don't drive, I just make the plans so I might be way off on the mileage. :D

I hope you have a nice hotel. The last time we stayed at the Best Western Garden Court Inn {something like that} and at 2 a.m. we had some seedy looking people pounding at our door. And it wasn't Anne whatever he name is {Ellen Degeneres' ex}.

Now, when we do stay, we stay more in the city area and not right off the freeway.

Oh, and yes, they have a Target! Air conditioned!!!

Have fun!

Ooooo.... I can hardly wait!

My late sister lived in 29 Palms for years. I remember her telling us how excited everyone was when they got their first elevator in town! Hot diggity!

The only hilarious part was that Carol Burnett rode in a stationwagon. She rode in the very back facing backwards.:D

I drove through Fresno last night. I detected no swankiness. But then it was about 10 p.m. on a Thursday night so all the swank may have been sound asleep after a long day in the raisin pastures.

It was World Swank Got to Bed early night. I know I went to sleep before 10.

Alex

Then that would confirm my unswankiness since I haven't been to sleep yet since waking up around 7 a.m. Thursday morning (except for falling asleep in the sports book at Paris for about 15 minutes before getting rousted).

Ahh, yes. My horny husband is on Chicago without me and has been reading a VERY arousing Murakami novel in the meantime. This is going to be 10 very looooong days.
