I thought it might be fun if a bunch of us read the same book, then we could talk about it in a thread or IM. Any takers?

If so, might I suggest Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell as our first book? Admittedly, I'm reading it for a real life book club, so it's rather convenient for me. I'm in the middle of Ghostwritten by the same guy, and it's good. Very weird and metaphysical, and very cool.

Of course, it doesn't have to be that book, so any suggestions are welcome.

This is why I have a Borders rewards card.......all the $$ I earn goes in an Xmas account to help me x mas shop for friends (or more likely me) :-)

I have that card. The only problem is that I tend to use amazon.com more often than I go to Borders.

Of a sort. I won the battle, but I'm glad to be at a point in my life where I do not need Dickens and will not have to read any more of his stuff.

A lot of people like Dickens, but it's not for me.

I can't fathom why people like his stuff. Aside from Christmas Carol they all just go on and on and on and on....damn serials.

Only one time in my life have I taken an essay exam on a book I never read. That book was Hard Times. Some lit class or another when I was an undergrad. Blahblahblah. Misery, misfortune, woe. Dickens and Cooper: just say no.

Just wondering...

Am I alone in not being particularly enamoured with O. Henry. I'm about a third of the way through a collection of short stories and so far, I'm underwhelmed. Maybe I'm missing something.

Tom Robbins, on the other hand, is rocking my world. :)

I'm presuming Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell is the first book - though I have yet to obtain a copy

However, anyone who would like to chat about Murakami, Niel Gaiman, or Duncan Glenn's I, Lucifer , which I'm reading at the moment, feel free to start a thread and I'll gladly join in.

I loved Devil in the White City, read that last summer. Fascinating read, if a bit verbose.

OK, I think we have enough people in this thread alone to get this going. All I need is a "for sure" name of the book and a date that we're going to start talking about it... I'm cool with any book, I will not try to veto anything. If tracilicious' pick is cool with you, it's fine by me.

I checked out a Goodnight Moon video from the Library for Indi. It's a collection of stories with kids talking about various subjects inbetween. It's a pretty creepy video.

Yes!!!! Yes!!!!! I love this book- it's probably my all time favorite.

E.M. Forster is good, too- 'Howard's End' is wonderful.
