They're doing a big announcement in NYC tomorrow (I'm still not clear on why they decided to do it at NYC). Hopefully it is something more interesting than just a new marketing campaign and some minor in park plusses.

Yawn.

I read about this a few days ago. So freaking what?

I mean, even if it's as big an announcement as 'The Disney Decade,' what part of 'saying it so' makes it so? Hardly any of that Disney Decade stuff happened, and please recall that Eisner was a mover and shaker in the days when that 10-year plan was announced.

Lassiter may be all goosebumps now, but a long-term plan has a way of unraveling ... and Disney's plans in particular have a way of turning out far more pedestrian than the lofty goals envisioned.

Actions, not words, please.

Big announcement? Feh.

the phrase "major announcement" is directed to the media, not Disney geeks. sometimes it takes alot to get the media to actually show up to a new campaign announcement.

it's next to impossible to please a crowd of Disney geeks and remain profitable.

Cinderella's royal bedchamber, now under construction at Magic Kingdom, will allow Disney guests to stay overnight inside the park and enjoy a view shared only by Tinker Bell. The lavishly decorated bedroom will be located in a space originally planned as an in-park apartment for the use of the Disney family.

I wonder how they're gonna pull that off. They won't want these special guests wandering around after the park closes I'm assuming.

That "special view" would include work lights and third shift janitorial, wouldn't it?

With security at the door so you don't go wandering around after park closing, I'm sure this will be charming indeed.

Hmmm... Most likely, naughty guests who go out after midnight break the Fairy Godmother's spell and find themselves clothed in rags in a pumpkin patch.

Then, the rats come.

I'm sure this will be charming indeed.

I'd do it, though :D I can see the potential problems with this, but I'm sure people that know more than I have figured out a way to make it work.

Well, all the hoopla seems to have been about a contest where there is ONE, count 'em, ONE prize-winning family. That disqualified me, as I'm sure the winning family will coincidentally be a married couple with young children.

The lone prize seems kinda neat ... early bird entry to each land of the Tragic Kingdom, with the lands opened for the public as you leave for the next land on a guided tour that does not specify what you get to do in each land or how long each land remains your family's private (firmly guided) playground.

Oh my, I exaggerated my expectations when I implied that this might have been even on the level of a hollow Disney-Decade announcement. It's a frelling contest and, as usual with Disney, a fixed one at that.

..."In addition, during the year-long celebration, other Disney dreams both large and small will be awarded in the "Disney Dreams Giveaway" promotion, such as:

* Traveling to each Disney resort around the world to serve as grand marshal in a Disney parade. * A variety of unique Disney vacation experiences. * Admission to special parties and other extraordinary experiences in the Disneyland and Walt Disney World parks. * Private meetings with favorite Disney characters. * Or, a Golden FASTPASS ticket with unique access entitlements to some of Disney's most popular attractions."...

sounds awesome to me.

But do you actually get to pick the guest and the experience you give them? Or are you assigned x give away on x day and you find the family you choose? Is there some special criteria for who gets picked?

CM's will be distributing one million "dreams" randomly using this method:

(example only): an overnite stay in Mickey's Penthouse Suite (Disneyland Hotel) given at 1:17PM to the 23rd Guest exiting the Haunted Mansion.

or

(example only): prize number X54321X given to the 4th Guest entering the Neverland Pool area.

Sorry to be cynical, but Disney cheats and lies and cheats some more. It's laughable to me to think that it will be the 23rd this or the 4th that. Random, my ass.

Let's see how many roudy teenagers win. Or how many hopeless geeks. I'm not buying it. There is a criteria and some people are just not free to say so.

I hope to be proven wrong. But it would mean a change in contest policy, and would be a big (and pleasant) surprise to me.

Mike Scopa was able to attend the official announcement. The one piece of news I thought particularly noteworthy was that Rock It Mountain was announced as part of the changes coming to Disneyland during this promotion.

But under the name Rockin' Space Mountain (I guess they'll need to do a new sign).

Gn2Dlnd
06-08-2006, 12:52 AM
Rockin’ Space Mountain – Space Mountain is getting a new twist. Thanks to new lighting and technology, Disney’s classic attraction will become a new experience in which rockets will rock it through the greatest concert in the universe. An all-new soundtrack will fit the exciting twists and turns of Disney’s rocket classic. (Spring 2007)

Yeah, I thought that was interesting, especially after hearing the lackluster reviews coming out of grad nights.

Stevie, Stevie, Stevie. You know, as well as I do, that if you were to win one of those randomly generated prizes, you'd geek up and act just as goofy and happy as any of the people you've ever seen win them before. Everbody makes a good promo photo when they're overwhelmed.

Here's hoping you win something, just so's your heart can grow two sizes. And, if you do, I hope I get an invite.

I've won a plush before. I even had a legitimate chance to win a car. When a machine selected guests as winners, it was truly random or based on real numbers ... but somehow when winners are selected by humans at Disney, the prizes always go to young families with two pre-teen children. Wonder why that is?

Woo-hoo! I have three pre-teen children! Woo-hoo!:)

I have bad memories about the machine process. I was there with a group of over 50 people back during the 30th anniversary when every 30th person through the gate got a prize. It was in the off season (October, I think?), and we were entering at the same time as only one other person. A single lady. She won a prize and no one in our group did.

I guess I'm with iSm on this one. I'll be interested to see whether the dream winners represent a variety of guest types or if they are all extremely photogenic and representative of the wholesome guest ideal.

Not that it matters to me personally, as I have no trips to either park planned currently. (Although I'd like to see the new sub ride when it opens.)

Alex
06-08-2006, 09:22 AM
It does not appear that the winners of the prizes will be selected by people but rather through a random selection process, most likely game cards at the gate like with the Honda promotion last year.

The announcement includes all of the normal disclaimers for such a promotion. No purchase necessary. Odds of winning dependent on number of entries, etc.

Jeez, iSm. In many ways I agree with you as usual but you are seriously King of Being a Dick About Things. :) <--said with a smile because I know iSm too well

I personally can't get too excited about giveaways because the chances are always small. Hell, we don't even go to the park /that/ often right now, and with a crowded summer looming I'm sure that's not going to change much. In any case I'm not going to doom and gloom about it, it's only a contest, and I'm happy for whoever wins.

It'd be cool if we did though ;)

Alex
06-08-2006, 11:20 AM
With a million prizes awarded over the course of a year at the U.S. parks that isn't even horrible odds (if based on gate admissions it would be about 1 in 50 or 60).

Of course, the odds of winning the hotel suite will be much worse (1 in 55,000 or so). I'm sure most of the prizes will be essentially worthless.

innerSpaceman
06-08-2006, 07:36 PM
Gee, sorry you feel like I'm being King Dick about this ... when you've seen as many Disney "winners" as I have, give me a ring, huh. I suppose I should start believing Disney press releases, too. Or assume that attractions will be what the imagineers envisioned.

Sorry, been around the Disney block too many times. They are cheats and liars and compromisers ... and no amount of me being optimistic or pessimistic is going to change that.

(Scaeagles and my own winning records notwithstanding, I'd be all sunny about this if humans were not determining the winners.)
