From an actual Dear Abby (http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/living/14779108.htm)DEAR ABBY: I have reason to believe that a young man in my family may be gay. (He is 15.) I have been thinking a lot about it lately, and have been wondering if circumcision would cure it. What do you think?
—Grandmother in Missouri

Dear Missouri Grandmother: Homosexuality is not an illness, and therefore there is no need for a "cure." I predict that your family will be happier if you accept your relative exactly the way he is, love him, support him and stop trying to think of ways to cure him.Does that dumb broad actually think circumcising her grandson will make him straight?!?

I'm at a loss for words to describe how stupid this person must be....

But I must give Dear Abby kudos for her response. :snap:

I'd be scared to think of what else she could come up with!! I wonder what she'd do if her granddaughter was a lesbian!

I'm so glad she's not my grandma!

As my grandmother is in Missouri, it wouldn't surprise me if she'd written this. Do I have any 15 year old cousins?

While I certainly don't understand her letter, I DO know that the older generations before us are not comfortable or understanding of homosexuality in the way that this generation thankfully is. The concept is so foreign to this women she actually believes there is a "cure" for something that in my eyes, isn't even a problem..and her "cure" is such a silly suggestion as that.

Ever since I was a little girl, I believed that if you were able to find love in this crazy and corrupt world that we live in, you were the most fortunate person in the world. What gender that person is or "supposedly" should be never even came into question to me. To have love, and be loved, is the most special feeling and act in the world. Man or woman, isn't even a factor to me.

When there is so much wrong, and so much heartbreak..how can people focus on who we choose to love as a problem? When it's so obviously a gift?

I don't think I'll ever understand people & why they are so hurtful, cruel and judgemental. :( :(

Honestly, I'm wondering if she doesn't see the biggest problem as the lack of circumcision. I'll bet she was *shocked* that didn't happen because in her mind it's What People Do and this is an excuse to get her way on that issue. Just my experience that people who present "problems" like this usually give more airtime to the lesser of their concerns.

Good lord, that is frightening. What is she going to do if she does think that would "cure" it? Force him to get circumcised? The lack of foreskin=straight logic is just puzzling.

Well, clearly she is ill-informed. I think Abby's response was spot on and one can hope that this Grandmother will do some further investigation and accept her grandson, without judgement no matter straight/gay/bi.

Do you think that major media coverage of this type of anti-gay rhetoric helps or hurts the cause of gay rights?

I would say it helps. It shows people that ignorance is no excuse and gets them thinking about the issue.

And that leads me to wonder. Was the "granny" real or simply another activist who found a new way to push his cause by sending a fake letter to Dear Abby.

A friend of mine was having problems with his mom. He thought that she was upset that he was dating a man. Wrong. She was happy he found someone. She said something like, 'I don't care that you're dating a guy, I care that you're dating a goy.'
I thought that was funny.

In today's newspaper, there was a letter from an elderly woman to this doc who runs a syndicated column. She was wondering why it was necessary to have a Pabst test when she was no longer sexually active. The doc was very kind in his response, but he did point out that beer wasn't a necessary component to the procedure.

Oldie but a goldie:

Guy goes to the Doctor and says he wants to be castrated. The Doctor tries to talk him out of it but the guy is dead set on getting one. The Doctor grants his wish and schedules the operation.

When the guy awakes from his operation he sees that there is another man in the bed next to his. "What are you in here for?" he asks the man. The man answers "circumcision"...............the guy slaps his forhead and repeats what the man said..................."CIRCUMCISION; that's the word!"

The concept is so foreign to this women she actually believes there is a "cure" for something that in my eyes, isn't even a problem.I appreciate the fact the old(er) folks are not comfortable discussing many things that today are generally held to be commonplace. (Hell, on I Love Lucy, they couldn't even say the word "pregnant"!) But what really slays me about this woman is her leap of "logic" that there is a connection between foreskin and The Gay.
