For those of you who don't know (on this board, all six of you), the modern gay rights movement started 27 years ago (http://www.americanheritage.com/places/articles/web/20060627-gay-bar-new-york-stonewall-inn-police-raid-gay-marriage-san-francisco.shtml) in a drag bar in New York City called the Stonewall Inn.
I tip my hat to those pissed off queens who had the cajones to not stand for the cop's crap (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonewall_riots) any more!

It was also rumored to be triggered by the death of Judy Garland ;)

"We are the Stonewall girls," they sang, kicking their legs in front of the police. "We wear our hair in curls./We have no underwear./We show our pubic hair."

Cheers to those of you who have made your way to be yourselves with the multitude of obstacles that were placed upon you in your younger days.
As the resident fag hag of my neighboorhood Act Up! group, I have seen a great amount change in the last 20+ years with regard to tolerance, and acceptance.
To those who started the movement, a toast, for your sincere bravery.

The Stonewall riot, while significant, wasn’t the first. There was one 3 years earlier at Gene Compton’s Café in San Francisco. Also, the gay rights movement didn’t start with Stonewall – homosexual rights groups were in existence long before – but it did give them a big boost.
The first gay pride parade was held to commemorate the one year anniversary of Stonewall.

The emphasis placed on the word "modern" in my original post was intended to suggest that. Daughters of Bilitis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daughters_of_Bilitis) and the Mattachine Society (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mattachine_Society) (to mention just a couple) were around long before the Stonewall Rebellion.

I wasn't refering to your original post. I made the comment because I hear too many people who think that there was no gay rights movement whatsoever before Stonewall.

Riots are great ways to initiate urban renewal projects, though
