This (http://www.netflix.com/Roadshow?lnkctr=mftr_roadshow) is very cool. Netflix will be showing cool movies where they were filmed. We'll definitely be going to see Raising Arizona. I used to live right there! Maybe it will give me an edge for the scavenger hunt! :p
The Poseidon Adventure feels like a really odd choice for that slate. It's a cool idea though.
However, I've made it almost 10 years in the Bay Area without going to Alcatraz and I'm hoping to make it another 10.

They could come out here to Kissimmee/ St. Cloud and show 2000 Maniacs. I've actually gone into downtown St. Cloud to find the locations for that Hershell Gordon Lewis classic, and I found them. whee.
Closer to my current digs, they could show Jaws 3-D at Sea World, though I doubt that would ever happen.

The Clerks screening sounds like fun, and Jaws is tempting too.
Field of Dreams would be awesome.
It's a cool concept, that's for sure. :)

Seems a little weird that the only LA-proximity screening is in Long Beach, but a Poseidon Adventure party would be a total blast! Too bad we have to "win" tickets somehow due to the limited availability. I'll be trying to win them, though. (What would YOU do for a Klondike bar?)

'Jaws'... cool. I'm glad it's not 'Mystic River', too depressing.

I'm afraid you missed it already. They showed that one long long ago...

I would love to see "The Searchers" in Monument Valley, but it's sure going to be a hot place in August.

I'd love to see 'Citizen Kane' at Hearst Castle. But I don't think that'll ever happen.

Seems a little weird that the only LA-proximity screening is in Long Beach, Yeah, you'd think they'd pick something a little more iconically L.A. But I bet they got a real good deal on renting out the Queen Mary. I mean, it's been whored out as the home in Last Comic Standing for crying out loud, it must be going cheap.

The event by me is free, first come first serve. I'm predicting that in August heat, the attendance will be painfully low. Especially at a location as far away from everyone as that is.

We did see Repo Man recently at the Cemetery, now if the ceetery was on First and Traction, that would've been even better.

I know they tend to do most of the work in sound stages or BC or something, but surely they could have come up with a Seattle showing? Somewhere there's a movie that has scenes on a ferry. I know that would be complicated, but how cool would that be?! Hell's bells - why not "It Happened at the World's Fair"?
Or 10 Things I Hate About You (notable to me only for scenes filmed at Gas Works Park, my groups favorite take a walk and hang out destination back in my college days).

I'm disappointed that they left off "Rebel Without a Cause" at the Griffith Observatory. That would have been cool.
I was wondering if maybe this was an undisclosed promotional tie in to one of the studios (which might explain some of the odder choices), but they're all over the place in that regard.

Isn't the GO still closed? That would be a PERFECT choice.

Actually, they are going to show "Star Wars" on Tatooine, or at least they plan to ... and have already contacted a friend of mine who is the expert on Death Valley locations used for the 1977 film.
I've been to "Tatooine" and have visted all the filming sites in Death Valley. It's a geek delight unparalleled, and I would return there for a showing of Star Wars in a heartbeat.
Ugh, I really wanted to go to their showing of "Close Encounters" at Devil's Tower, Wyoming a couple years back. How do you win tickets to this Queen Mary/Poseidon Adventure screening??
(Oh, and when did Netflix buy the Rolling Roadshow??)
One of my great personal memories is making a reasonably large mashed potato model of Devil's Tower while camping in the shadow of Devil's Tower. I'm sure the park rangers have seen it billions of times but we had fun.
For those who have never been, there is also a field near the base that has the largest prarie dogs I've ever seen.
North by Northwest at Mount Rushmore would be a great one too.

Yes, that would make a great 'double-feature' as they are only a few hours drive from one another. (heheh, I hosted a double-feature screening of CE3K and NxNW before we left for Mt.Rushmore and Devil's Tower. I didn't do the mashed potato thing, but the prairie dog town was awesome!)

I think the Clerks screening could be a lot of fun.
I was trying to think about what could be done in my area.. best I could come up with is Great Expectations (the Ethan Hawke/Gwyneth Paltrow version) at the Ringling Mansion. I'd probably be into that.

The Alabama hills are cool.
Disney's One Little Indian (starring James Garner, Vera Miles, and Jodie Foster) was mostly filmed in a canyon outside of Kanab, Utah.
The canyon is now owned by a single entity and is home to the very large Best Friends Animal Society (http://www.bestfriends.org/), a no kill shelter*. If you're in the area it is definitely worth a tour (at least one structure was still standing from filming when we were there a couple years ago). It would be a good spot for a fund-raising screening (other movies were filmed in that canyon as well).
*I'm of the opinion that euthanasia is appropriate for unclaimed strays and feral pet species in most situations but this is the best no-kill situation I've ever seen.

That would be so cool. I haven't seen that movie in ages. It's such a good film.

Totally. Isn't Mount Whitney near there, too?
The best part about Lone Pine is that there's not much light polution. At night, with no moon, you can see the milkway. It's awesome. I camped out there once, it's truly stunning.

Out of curiosity, why? I worked at the Hawaii Human Society for 1 day during high school. They showed me 'the chamber' (empty, no animals) and I had to leave. They also showed us a film w/ before and after pictures and couldn't take it.

I wish they would show either:
Beverly Hills Cop II, Charlies Angels: Full Throttle, Dragnet, or even Toxic Avenger 4
Location, location, location :D

First of all, I don't find the prospect of killing a non-pet dog or cat any more emiotional than killing a non-pet cow or chicken. So I don't have that objection that many have that somehow dogs and cats are uniquely deserving of protection.
But I certainly don't have a problem with no-kill. It is just that most places have neither the space, funding, nor staffing to properly manage the phenomenal quantity of such animals it would be necessary to house humanely. For cats sterilize and release is frequently an acceptable option (depending on need to protect local native habitat) but that won't work with dogs at all). Even if broad education and promotion programs result in adopting out every animal available the places still eventually fill up with animals that in good conscience can not be adopted (and BFAS has this problem, slowly their kennels fill with dogs they can't adopt out and they have a huge amount of space but it is still limited by funding and staffing).
You should have stayed longer at he Hawaii Humane Society because then we'd likely have a "small world" connection. My first landlord in Hawaii was a crazy old lady (and I mean that literally) whose only purpose in life beyond filling her house with junk was getting HHS and the City of Honolulu to stop euthenasia and implement a sterilize-and-release program for cats AND dogs. She was down there pretty much all the time for the previous 20 years.

For awhile, we were looking to get a dog in Hawai'i. So I visited the HHS several times a month looking for a dog to adopt. There were a few protester types around on a number of occasions. I'm sure she was one of them.
The BFAS looks like a cool place.

I have a bunch of BFAS publications. Another crazy cat lady gave them to me to read. They have a great facility and, if I'm ever in the area, I will drop by.

We did our own outdoor screening twice in Monterey. We did 'LOTR:FOTR' in our friend's backyard and 'Master and Commander' in another friend's backyard. It was fun.
All we needed was an LCD projector and a big sheet.
When I move back to CA, we should plan one of these. We'll just do it ourselves. I'm sure CoasterMatt or Moonliner or GD could make us an LCD projector.
:)
We did a backyard screening of To Catch a Thief at Andrew's a couple years ago. LCD, white sheet, PVC frame. It was a lot of fun.

Yes, the Alabama hills are sort of the foothills of the sierras in the owens valley, Mount Whitney is nearby. On the opposite side of the valley in the white mountains there are some great ghost towns too.
