I've been reading the series of unfortunate events books and I have to say I love them almost as much as the harry potter books. They are definately an easier/shorter read. Pretty funny too. It's interesting how they took the first three books and put them into one movie. I'm starting the third one today.
The movie was excellent. I thought Jim Carrey did an excellent job and the kids were very good too. I even liked merril streap and I usually don't. My favorite part of the whole movie was the production value and effects. They did such a great job creating a world that is similar to ours yet soo different...if that makes sense. If it doesnt see the movie.

I really loved the books....I read them the week before the movie came out....talk about putting it off. ;) It was driving my daughter CRAZY that I wouldn't read them. Then I started and could NOT stop.
I thought the movie was good. It didn't quite capture the book's little idiosynchrasies....like it would have been very cool if they would have endlessly defined words. It would have been so easy to add that in and would be so true to the book. It always cracks me up how inventively the definitions are added. My daughter really learned some great words from the books!
I thought Jim Carey was really good. I'm no Carey fan, but I thought he was unlikeable, funny, and a total jerkoff in the movie. Olaf is a jerk.....but in the most bizarre ways. I thought Carey fit in the role.
We laughed a lot. My husband hadn't read the books....so he was really cracking up. He was just so shocked by the dark humor. He kept saying, "Their parents JUST died!!!" while laughing. :D

Their parents die? Oh, great. Now you've spoiled it for me.
Just kidding. The books are great, aren't they? I think I'll go have an aqueous martini in the dark.

LOL an aqueous martini... love it :) They're SO in!
Ralph, the books get much MUCH better around book 5 or so (when they start becoming more of a mystery/cliffhanger). Keep on reading!!! I love the multitude of literary references that are made throughout each book.... I know there are websites about the subject of literary reference in SoUE.
I was wholly disappointed with the movie because of Jim Carrey. He wasn't playing Count Olaf, he was playing himself. I can't decide whether it was a complete miscast, or if he just needed a director to tone him down. Though I did enjoy the production design, sets, kids that played the Baudelaires, and especially Meryl Streep.
