I saw a roach this morning
The first.
Though I envision leagues within my walls
My guts froze up as I ran to get a glass
The beast was so enraptured with it's findings
that it didn't try to scurry
I lay on the floor and looked at my captive
She was lighter in color and more delicate
than her brutish companions
Her dark eyes examined me as I examined her
meticulously grooming her forelegs and antennae
Her head moved quizzically
Who knew that roaches have necks?
I imagined her in her soundproof glass
speaking a language foreign to my ears
Declaring herself queen and granting me amnesty
in exchange for her life
Or perhaps stating her intent to enter my ear
and eat out my brains
in a disturbingly matter of fact tone
I put the glass on a shelf
she awaits her death
Execution by smooth soled shoe at dusk
But for what it's worth you didn't disgust me
Queen of the swift legged
or perhaps dancer in their court.

I like it! :)

That is, I like it, as long as I don't have some creepy roach-in-my-ear dream tonight. Then, not so much.

Lovely! I used to keep roaches as pets...they are fascinating critters. So, a plea: spare her? Perhaps to meet another day, on another battlefield? She gave you a poem, you could reciprocate!:D

OMG, lizzibith. Pets? That's weird, even for LoT. ;) I hate to say it, but she's already dead. This actually happened over the weekend. I actually almost felt bad about it. Almost. Michael did the dirty deed (I can't smash bugs, I hate the sound), so the guilt was a few steps removed. Besides, she prompted me to call the exterminator anyways, so I'm sure we did her a favor. Smashing has got to be kinder than a neurotoxin. We're only spraying the garage and outside, as I'm not going to have pesticides in the house, so I hope it works.

:( It's okay...I realize most folks don't feel the way I do about bugs! Attributed to Huxley: God must have loved beetles because he made so many of them. :(

Yes, I seriously love bugs.

Beauty of a poem. Don't feel bad Traci - it's for the health of your household.

I wish I had kept the hobo spider in my house last year as a pet. I'm sure I won't see another one now that I'm not in the desert anymore. That thing was HUGE.

Liz, I really like (as in appreciate) bugs too. But not roaches. They are very gross. I did learn a lot about them in the past few days because I heard an odd vibrating noise by my bed a few nights ago and I wanted to find out if roaches ever make noise. They don't, so that mystery is unsolved. I've just gotten to the point where crickets don't scare me. They are viscious little creatures though.
