I deliberately rented 'Johnny Tremain' from Netflix recently to see some bonus footage of Walt talking about his idea to add Liberty Street to DL's Main Street USA. It was to be complete with a Liberty Tree with 13 lanterns on it. The street was to start to the left of the Mad Hatter Shop and run between MSUSA and TL.

Anyone know what happened to this project?

Mostly it is just a project that never quite got off the table. The ideas were big but at initial announcement hte technology didn't really support the Hall of Presidents idea (before audioanimatronics they would have just been a bunch of manequins). By the time the technology caught up the project had been abandoned and WED Enterprises distracted by the World's Fair and more specific projects and then they were all busy trying to design Disney World and Liberty Square ended up over there.

Liberty Street wasn't the first announced plan for the area, previously there had been an announcement of an International Street (a small version of World Showcase) but that never happened either.

Jim Hill has an interesting article (http://jimhillmedia.com/blogs/jim_hill/archive/2005/03/14/563.aspx) about it.

Interesting. There appears to be a lot of real estate back there.

(I have a desktop photo that's a satellite shot of Disneyland. I love looking at it and seeing where they could expand etc.)

In my version of Disneyland, Liberty Square ends up where the Indian Village is, around the backside of the Rivers of America. You know, just past Discovery Bay?

It's in Florida. Liberty tree with 13 lanterns and everything.

That's so bizarre, Gn2Dlnd, cause that's where Liberty Square is in my meticulously designed and space-planned, highly improved Disneyland. Teehee.

(I was very flattered many years ago when Disneyland Paris put their Captain Hook pirate ship and lagoon pretty much right where mine was.)

Wow! I feel like I just experienced the real-life inspirations for the vision of Liberty Street. In the past few weeks, I toured historic Philadelphia, visited Greenfield Village at The Henry Ford in Michigan http://www.hfmgv.org/village/historicdistricts.asp, and then noticed the Liberty Street concept art in the "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln: 50th Anniversary Edition" display case. All for the first time. NM and I were commenting on its similarities to WDW Liberty Square (also experienced for the first time in December) and noticing what a large space there is between Tomorrowland and Main Street. But, where would the parade go?

This thread and Jim's article just tied it all together for me. I'm having a historic moment. Thanks GC.
