Watch this great video (http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/video1019.htm) and decide for yourself.

As the original poster of this thread, I ask you to only comment directly on the video, and not to bring political leanings into the discussion.

I'm going with dry-drunk.

So is it ok to call him an ego driven moron? A sociopath with no conscience? A disingenuous abuser of the American propensity to look to their president as their leader?

No?

I'll go with dry-drunk.

What was wrong with calling him 'idiot' ?

That's certainly an interesting comparison of then vs. now. I don't think that video alone proves anything (and the fact that his mouth was not visible in the old video raises a small red flag), but I think it's worthy of further examination.

There was once an interesting article at Slate (I think) during the 2004 campaign that went into detail on how Bush consciously changed his speaking and debating style from a more polished approach to a more "aw shucks" style that they found worked a lot better.

I don't know how I'd go about finding it though.

Andy Griffith is a great example of a well-spoken person using an "aw shucks" delivery. GW fumbles for words, meanings, hell, even topics.

I think making any sort of diagnosis like that based on one video...or even based on all his public appearances is a bit narrow. For all we know, jumping from governor to president was just too much for him to handle. Or a lot of it could be affectation to appeal to his base (it frightens me how many people voted for him because he couldn't form a coherent sentence).

I've made my share of jokes about his public speaking abilities because it bugs the hell out of me that someone holds that position is incapable of being presentable. But I stop short of claiming to be able to diagnose what's wrong with him.

So you agree then, that something is wrong with him? ;)

Is there video proof of him speaking in an proper manner? That could be interesting. I do agree with Greg...

All I know is that presidents age very quickly in office. Ronnie, Bush Sr, Bill, Dubya... Tough job.

isnt that amazing? remember what it did to Jimmy Carter in but a few short years?

he went in looking like a middle aged businessman...
by the time his short stint was over, you'd have thought he'd been in office for two decades. I cant imagine a job that could age a person faster.

I can't believe this thread is straying from my original demands. I must rebuke each and every one of you.

Anyway... as long as we're on the new subject, this is a picture of Theodore Roosevelt just days before his inauguration (or so I'd like to believe):http://www.theodoreroosevelt.org/graph%20harv%20col/HC1.jpg

and here he was last weekend:

Did you watch the video, it starts with it. Of course, it also compares a scripted presentation with an extemporaneous one. Bush has given many scripted speeches during his presidency in which he does just fine on the delivery.

Remember the SNL Reagan parody? Phil Hartman played Reagan: In front of the press and public he was an old, doddering fool who appeared to be 'handled' by his cabinet, but out of the public's eye he morphed into an incredibly sharp, commanding president who fired off orders and had all the men around him cowering in fear.

Nope. Quicktime is banned at my Fortune 5 company due to a pissing match with apple.

Home now though, and I watched it. It is very interesting. Agree with you on the scripted discussion vs. open forum. Apples and oranges comparision, still an interesting comparison none the less.

I just replied to your private message before I realized you also posted here.

I'm not going to start flame war with someone I like.

I'll admit that the shot was cheap. I felt slighted and annoyed at behavior in another thread and decided that humor was the best route to take. Definitely not the most clever or intellectual humor, I'll admit.

I got over it. I hope you do, too.

Ah, but should you speak English while proclaming from the Bully Pulpit (to keep the Teddy thing going) how you'd like to punish minors as if they had the mental capacity of adults??? I think that's the question of the moment.

It's pretty obvious that Karl Rove had Bush well prepared back in '94. He was all talking points and stay-on-message vigor.

Being non-scripted (for the most part) and the huge pressure he was under sure made a difference in his presentation.

I just wish I could find the quote where he talks about Gynecologists practicing their love with women across the country.
